Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of iHome iHM9 Portable Stereo System for iPod, iPhone, and MP3 Players (Black)

Customer Review: For quieter usage.
Summary: 2 Stars

I got this product as my first iHome, and I'm not very satisfied. They make the product look MUCH larger than it actually is, but what company doesn't? If anyone has ever told you that you listen to music too loud or "ARE YOU DEAF?" than this is not the product for you. There is no volume control on the product, so you have to use your ipod/mp3 player for volume. I was not aware that I had to use a cord to use this machine, and that makes it much worse. Your device only sits on the ihome correctly when it is not plugged in. And most important, do NOT buy this item if your looking for a home for your touch or iphone, or something of equal size. The Itouch is longer and much taller than the speaker system, so it cannot stand on it. But other than that, if you were going to buy it for your 5 year old who doesn't blast his looney toons sound track and has a 2 inch ipod shuffle, go for it.

Customer Review: Very Good Sound, Long Battery Life
Summary: 5 Stars

* Nice sound for a battery powered compact speaker. I've hear that Pacific Rim has a nice one as well, called The Cube. Now, you'd probably get a better sound from a similarly priced AC powered unit. I've had lesser priced portable units that were awful. I was pleasantly surprised by the ihome speaker's seriously decent sound.
* This unit holds 4 AA batteries. My experience is that I can get 3 or 4 weeks of 3 or 4 hour a day play on one set of batteries. I thought that was exceptional for speakers.
* The short cord works fine with my Sanza mp3 player. I don't use the docking station, but that isn't important to me. I simply sit my mp3 player next to the speaker. The cord is only about 6 to 8 inches long, but it seems to be well constructed (the wire gauge seems to be a little thicker than other portable units I have used).

Customer Review: Good Sound. Great bang for your buck!
Summary: 5 Stars

For under $15, you can't go wrong here. I use this to listen to my iPod or iPhone in the shower in the morning (it sits outside the shower, obviously!). The speakers are surprisingly loud and the sound is surprisingly full. It operates off of 4 AA batteries. I use re-chargeable ones so that doesn't bother me. It does not charge the phone, but for the price and portability, I don't mind that either.

The input cord is a bit strange though. It fits into a small recessed dip on the bottom of the front of the unit. This requires the iPod/iPhone 3G to either sit on its side or sit awkwardly vertical. The iPod/iPhone 4G is fine because the headphone jack is on the top and not the bottom. Check the pictures section, I have a picture posted of the 3G and 4G each in the unit.

All in all, good sound, good value, good buy.

Customer Review: Got what I paid for...
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought my wife an iPod touch and Amazon had a deal where you got this iHome for free... and I will say I got what I paid for.

Since it was free, I didn't pay too much attention to the specs, but if I was paying for it, here are some things to consider:

1. It ONLY runs on batteries. (4 AAA) In other words, the iPod is constantly draining while it is on it instead of charging like some other true docking stations.
2. She only used it while she was in the kitchen, maybe a couple hours a week, and not at high volumes. After three months of this type of use, the speakers are shot.

When it did work, it was a small portable speaker set that was a nice to have around the house, but I wouldn't pay money for this model. Look for an upgraded one.

Customer Review: Very basic, decent speaker for mp3 player
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very, very basic speaker to increase the volume you get out of your mp3 player. It's nothing more than a battery-powered speaker with an on-off switch, a small light, and a cord to plug into the mp3 player's audio output. It's important to note that **there is no dock**. Just a small ledge to rest the mp3 player on, with a slot that your player may or may not fit into. Also, no place to recharge your player, no power cord, no volume control (other than the control on your mp3 player). But for $15, you can hardly complain. Using my iPod Touch, the sound is loud and clear enough to hear across the room. It's somewhat tinny, and distorts at top volume, but that's probably caused by the Touch rather than the speakers and can be avoided by keeping the volume down a notch.
