Customer Review: Would not work with my Mac
Summary: 1 Stars

OK, weighing in on the debate among reviewers as to whether this printer works with a Mac. In my experience, no. I run OS X 10.4.11. The driver software provided with the printer is out of date. It will install perfectly well but when printer setup utility is run, the model # and driver do not appear in the drop down menu.

HP has an update available for download on its site, v. 1.0.6, which, they claim, is specifically designed for my OS. Except when downloaded and installed, the exact same problem occurred. I tried several other drivers from the list without success. I can send a document to print and it appears in the queue and even shows that it printed successfully, but nothing actually happens.

I consider myself above average on the computer savvy scale. But after two days of installing, confirming installation, and reinstalling I finally gave up.

Congratulations to those of you who got this to work on your Macs. As for me, this printer is going back.

Customer Review: dead again
Summary: 1 Stars

UPDATE 3/4/10: The saga is over. The last warranty replacement printer has died. That's three - all for the same reason. Do NOT buy this printer. But if you already have one, I have a spare toner.
UPDATE 9/25/09: The printer HP provided as a warranty replacement just died - that makes 2 failed HP1006 models in less than a year. Anybody need a doorstop? I would change it to zero stars, but Amazon only lets you edit text, not the number of stars.
UPDATE: The printer lasted 4 months & is going back to HP for a replacement. Change that to 1 star.
I had an HP 1012 and loved it 'til it died and I didn't think it was worth the cost of repair. I replaced toner cartridges annually. In the P1006, the toner lasted a couple of months. Printing is slower than the older model. I wish I'd repaired the old one. The P1006 works (generally) but is a step down from the machine I bought 5 years ago. I agree with Mr. Cencioso's review.

Customer Review: Disappointed- not Mac friendly
Summary: 1 Stars

I got a Mac for my small business in the hopes of alleviating some of the computer problems I was having using a PC and Windows. I was so bummed to find my little workhorse of a printer- the HP 1020-was not Mac compatible. Because the 1020 was such a great printer, I had high hopes for the P1006, especially since it was the "newer model." This printer has been nothing but trouble! It took forever to figure out how to get it set up with Parallels- I run a lot of software on windows- and then trying to print was a nightmare. Finally got it working, thanks to my $100 per hour IT guy- not HP or Parallels. It is now working ok, but whenever I use my office letterhead, it prints out skewed. I talked to HP and they sent me a new (refurbished) printer. Same problem- this printer does not like my letterhead. Suffice to say I am not happy and will have to move to a more Mac friendly printer when this one dies- hopefully sooner than later!

Customer Review: nice little printer
Summary: 4 Stars

I BOUGHT THIS PRINTER TO REPLACE A HP LASERJET IIIP WHICH I HAD USED FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS AND I LOVED IT. IT FINALLY GAVE UP THE GHOST AND I DECIDED RATHER THAN GET IT REPAIRED, I WOULD REPLACE IT WITH A NEWER MODEL. AFTER LOOKING AT MANY PRINTERS, I DECIDED TO PURCHASE THE HP P1006 AMD I AM NOT SORRY I DID. IT HANDLES MY SMALL PRINTING NEEDS WITH EASE. THE ONLY THING THAT KEPT ME FROM GIVING IT A FIVE STAR RATING WAS THE FACT THAT RIGHT AT FIRST, FOR SOME REASON, MAYBY MY OWN IGNORANCE, OCCASIONALY IT WOULDN'T PRINT. I WOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE MOTIONS OF OPENING AND CLOSING THE TOP FIVE TIMES, THEN RESTART MY COMPUTER, THEN IT WOULD WORK FINE. NOW, IT SEEMS TO PRINT EVERY TIME I ASK IT TO AND I AM VERY HAPPY WITH IT. LIKE I SAID, I WOULD HAVE RATED IT WITH FIVE STARS IF NOT FOR THAT SMALL GLITCH WHEN I FIRST SET IT UP. OTHER THAN THAT I CAN SAY, IF YOU NEED A SMALL COMPACT PRINTER, GET THIS ONE. YOU WON'T BE SORRY.

Customer Review: It *is* difficult to set up
Summary: 4 Stars

I chose to buy this printer for work, in spite of all the mixed reviews on it. I really wanted something that would let me load more than one envelope at a time for printing. I was also attracted to the small size of the printer. I was a little worried about the set-up difficulties that many people wrote about, and rightly so. I am not a novice, but I was not able to set it up right away. I used the internet chat feature with HP to get help, but this did not work the first time. They suggested that I get a new cable, since I was trying to connect it to the computer with an old cable. I had to wait a week for the cable to come, then tried it again with no luck. I used the chat feature again, was told something different to try, and this time it worked. Turned out, I didn't need the new cable after all, though. Now that it's working, I really like the printer. It's much faster and quieter than my previous HP printer.
