Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP LaserJet P1006 Printer

Customer Review: Great home / home office laser printer
Summary: 3 Stars

I received this laser printer as a replacement for my HP LaserJet 1020 Printer (Q5911A#ABA) which was roughly the same size and price. The toner for the older laser jet had roughly double the page yield which is my biggest complaint about the HP P1006.

On a positive note: for the price, this printer is outstanding. It installed in under 5 minutes on both Windows XP and Windows Vista (I have it installed on two machines). It prints VERY fast and is reasonably quiet. The print quality is outstanding, even using the economy mode to save toner. For a home office or general home use, this printer can't be beat for its price. It will save the average user hundreds of dollars in ink costs.

Note to users who want to do double sided printing:
I like to print double sided to save paper and in order to consolidate some of my larger print jobs. I've noticed that double sided printing wreaks havoc on this printer... I'm not sure whether its the toner or the printer itself. In any case, after you print several pages double sided the printer fails to produce high quality prints no matter how many times you run the cleaning utility. Instead you get lots of debris and extraneous black spotting on the paper. So, I recommend you steer clear of double sided printing.

Customer Review: Excellent Printer... Needs a Driver Update!
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this printer, I bought it on sale over the weekend for under $100 (couldn't resist a laser printer at that price!). I probably printed about 700 pages this weekend, one of the perks of being a Grad student I suppose.

The Positives
-Prints quickly and great font quality
-The printer is SMALL, smaller than my injet.
-Works great with XP and Vista (sorry, No Mac to test on)

The Con
-This printer won't work with my wireless print server. The reason given is that the driver doesn't support it at this time. My workaround for the time being is to share the printer from the desktop in my office since I do most of my printing from my laptop in another room.

Hopefully that driver or a firmware upgrade to the print server (whichever comes first) comes out soon! Otherwise this is an incredible laser printer for the price!

On a side note, many people in discussion forums have complained about the high cost per sheet for a laser printer (about 4 cents a page), it is still far lower than any inkjet AND the printer just came out, as far as I've seen, Laser cartridges (at least here on Amazon) tend to fall in price by a few dollars after the product has been out for 6 or more months. I don't see this changing for this printer as well.

Customer Review: Print Queue locks up randomly - No fix from HP after 2 years of complaints
Summary: 1 Stars

Before you buy this printer, search online for "P1006 print queue hangs." The print queue for this printer randomly locks up on windows systems and the only fix is a reboot followed by a bunch of other debug steps (using an HP diagnostic tool). Usually after messing with it for 20-30 minutes you can get it working again.

When the printer works, it's a great little printer. Very compact, pretty fast, and nice clean output. Unfortunately, the reliability is so bad I can only give it one star. I would strongly recommend avoiding this product if you plan to use it on a windows system (can't comment on other OS's).

One other small note is that power is controlled with a push-button, not a toggle switch. If you have a power outage, you need to push the button to turn it on. That wouldn't be a big deal, but forgetting to do this and trying to print with the power off guarantees a print queue lockup, and 20-30 minutes of debug time (as does running out of paper).

Although the printer queue often hangs unexpectedly, I can reproduce the queue lockup problem on-demand (Windows XP Pro, all updates, latest HP driver), as can others who have posted on online forums. Yet, for some reason HP hasn't fixed the issue or issued a recall after over 2 years of trouble reports.

Customer Review: Great buy for the not so tech-savy but frequently printing person
Summary: 5 Stars

I did not buy this printer through Amazon, but I bought it through an Office Depot that was closing. Since the store was closing, I got a heck of a deal and paid $90! I bought this printer over two years ago, and I have printed hundreds upon hundreds of pages of work while in college and now in law school, and my cartridge still prints like its brand new! I purchsed a laserjet because I was so sick of purchasing toner that most of the time my old inkjet printers sat around collecting dust. So graduate from using expensive inkjet printers and buy this laser printer!

Pros:
-Prints hundreds of pages from one cartridge. Very inexpensive compared to having to purchase pricey toner so frequently for inkjet
-Very easy set up. I am not the most tech-savy, but I had this set up and printing in minutes
-Prints documents very, very quickly. A 30-page document will be printed in matter of mere minutes!
-Small, convienent size makes it easy to put anywhere and not get in the way
-Very reliable and durable. After 2 years and lots of printing, this has held up amazingly!

Cons:
-Very basic features on this printer - no wireless printing or other fancy features

Customer Review: Best paperweight I have ever owned
Summary: 1 Stars

I have owned many personal laser printers over the years. Most of them I have eventually given away because I was upgrading to something better. Originally I purchased a small Brother for about $50.00. It worked great but I gave it to my father to "upgrade" to this P1006. I got this as a steal from Newegg on a shell shocker special. I have had nothing but issues. The worst issue is the fact that sometimes it just won't print. Then I have to remove the usb cable, purge the job and restart the computer. This happens quite often with this printer. HP insists it's my computer but being a tech I know better. I have 3 customers with this printer and all are experiencing the same issues using 3 different Windows versions. My gut feeling is it's a drive issue. I have the latest drivers installed. The second issue has to do with toner. My last laser printer got about 3000 prints per toner cartridge. If this one gets 600 prints I'd be surprised. HP used to be a top notch company but with a 25.6% failure rate with their laptops within the first 3 years I guess their printers are following suit. Such a shame. On the plus side this is a beautiful looking laser printer. It is the nicest looking paperweight I have ever owned.
