Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP LaserJet P1006 PrinterCustomer Review: Extremely underwhelmed Summary: 1 Stars
I bought the HP P1006 to replace a Dell 1100 laser printer that had quit working. I'd heard many good things about HP printers and thought I didn't want another Dell because of the issues with having to order toner. The price point of the HP was good, about $100 and I was able to get an extra toner cartridge for $20 off the regular price.
I am a college student. I have the option of reading my books on line, but choose to print them out because it is less tiring on my eyes. To save paper and space, I print on both sides of the paper. This is a manual process, of course, since the printer is not high-end. The Dell was the same way. On HP's web site, it talks about how when duplex printing, the print may be smeared. Not a big deal for me, since I'm the only one reading what I've printed. What the website doesn't say, and I wish it did, is that to properly duplex print, printing is ALL you should be doing with your machine. When the first side of your job is done, you have to hit the "continue" button. It doesn't tell you that the "continue" button isn't a button on the printer, but instead is a window on your screen. According to other reviews I've read, this printer can't be shared between two machines well. That will probably also end up being a problem for me.
Unfortunately, the store I bought the printer from (not amazon) has a 14 day return policy on electronics and I've had the printer a month, so I'm stuck with it. I would not recommend this printer to anyone.
Customer Review: P Laserjet P1006 is not as convenient as HP Laserjet 6L Summary: 3 Stars
This printer starts fast and print fast with high resolution. However, it is not convenient when printing envelope using, for example Word, compared with my former HP Laserjet 6L. For the 6L, when print-envelope job is sent, the printer waits for me to put in an envelope, and the printing will start only when I push the "start button". There is no start button in the P1006, and I need to go to printer setup window to setup envelope printing and place an envelope in the tray before the print-evelope job is sent. After printing the envelope, I need to reset the print for ordinary printing. This is very inconvenient. Also for the 6L, I can let the envelope bend through about only 130 deg from input to output and the envelope comes out nearly unbent. With the P1006, everything has to bend 360 deg from input to output. The envelope after bending such large angle need to be flattened after printing. Also the toner is much more expensive than that for the 6L. Although they cost roughly the same, that for the 6L can print 2500 pages, but that for the P1006 is much smaller and can print only 1500 pages. To me, the only good point for the P1006 is its fast printing rate and low price of $90 at Amazon.com. Besides that everything is not as good as the 6L. It is too bad that the fuse roller of my 6L is broken and it cost $70 to $100 or more to repair.

Customer Review: A Total Piece of Unmittigated Junk Summary: 1 Stars
Shocked! Blown away! Disillusioned! Stunned! I got this utter piece of plastic junk home and the paper feeder failed immediately. I opened it up to find that all the parts looked cheaper than ever Brother. It was noisy and trashy in every way. If you have a 1012, hang onto it for dear life! Everyone I know comes to me for computer advice. I'm a triple-platform guy who's done Linux, Mac, PC, and multiple versions of each. Well, I always said, before this 1006 came out, that is was HP or nothing when it came to affordable, excellent laser printers. No more! I went to all the major big box stores, turns out they're forcing the 1006 on us by not having any other model in that price range in stock. I had, up till this point, been a total starry-eyed believer in HP. Now I'm just flabbergasted, flummoxed, confused. Can this be real? I'm sure younger people who might buy this might not know. Perhaps they are so used to inferior products that they won't even get it. But for those of us who bought the 1012, this is an unmitigated slap in the face. It's surreal! Please, please write HP and tell them to recall this utter pile of flimsy junk and make us a real laser jet with really long-lasting toner cartridges and solid, sturdy parts instead of the sad, paper-thin bits of fragile trash they are currently using for components in this disgraceful machine. Please, HP, return to your former glory. Don't go down with the rest of short-sighted corporate America! Help!
Customer Review: Hp P1006 Printer Review Summary: 4 Stars
I just bought this printer but was aprehensive due to some of the customer feedback I had reviewed. I setup the printer to my Windows XP PC and started to print. I was particluarly concerned about three comments made in reviews that I had read:
1)The printer does not print very good at point 5 font - false
2)The printer makes noise when just turned on - false
3)The printer does not duplex - true
I tried to print a document at point 5 font and to my surprise it was very legible. The quality is very good whether at FasRes600 or FasRes1200.
The printer made virtually no noise when I started it up. I even turned it off then on again and detected very little noise.
The printer does not duplex automatically. However, if you set the prefernce to print on both side, the manual process is quite easy. You simple remove the paper and re-insert exactly as you remove it - no need to re-orientiate. I found this to be a big plus compared to the ink jet printers.
I tried printing a picture at FasRes1200 and I must say the picture was not sharp as I expected from a laser printer. With the exception of words in the picture, the image was quite grainy. But being a monchrome printer, that is not a major issue for me, I will print my pictures on the inkjet.
Cons: The paper tray is open and therefore exposed to dust - then again the open tray makes it easy to re-insert the paper for duplex printing.
Customer Review: Macs Need Driver v1.0.6 Summary: 4 Stars
This P1006 is a compact, speedy printer suited for personal or light office use. It's working fine with our iMac Intel Core2Duo (White model) running OS X 10.4.
Macintosh users: If your P1006 comes with HP installation disc v4.0 or lower, DO NOT use the disc. Go to HP's web site instead and download and install their latest P1006 Mac driver, which is now version 1.0.6 (release date July 9, 2008). Version 1.0.6 adds OS X 10.5 support (according to the documentation, I'm not running 10.5) and fixes the frustrating Microsoft Office 2004 printing bug, which I personally experienced. When I first got my P1006, I installed the buggy driver from the HP installation disc v4.0. Afterwards, whenever I tried to print (using Command-P) from Word 2004 or Excel 2004, the printer would constantly error out, which was getting infuriating. However, after installing the v1.0.6 driver, the printing problem went away. Phew!
Pros:
Fast startup time
Fast printing
Inexpensive
On/Off button on the front of the printer
Cons:
Smaller toner capacity than predecessor LaserJet 1012, 1020 models, as noted by others.
Installation disc that comes with the printer has outdated, buggy drivers.
Update 4/23/09:
I am now using this printer with an aluminum iMac (2008) using the driver that comes with OS X 10.5, and it continues to work well.
