Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP LaserJet P1006 Printer

Customer Review: 3 for product; 0 for HP
Summary: 3 Stars

I was forced to buy a new printer when I [unwillingly] moved to Win 7. Unfortunately, HP does not support my old printer (LaserJet 1000). And has no intent of doing so, according to other distressed 1000 users who faced the same situation.

So, I got this one.

It sounds as tho it's ready to jump off the desk (ka-CHUNCK!) each time it prints a page, however. The first couple of times I printed from it, I thot it was broken!

It takes longer to start printing than I think it ought to. It "warms up" each time before the ka-CHUNCK, unless you're printing multiple pages on the same job.

The copies are good. And it's pretty fast once it gets printing (tho slower than the 1000).

>>Cautions<<:
1. HP does NOT supply a USB cable. You must have your own. (I think this is cheesy of HP. I expected better from them.)
2. The printer comes with a tiny "trial" cartridge. So get yourself a "real" one right away.
3. There's no manual or other documentation.

So far, this is a decent purchase for the price. Still [unhappy] about the no-show USB cable and non-cartridge!

Update (Mar., 2010): Suddenly this printer has started to print more copies than I ask for. I have checked all printer settings, etc., as well as the printer instructions (Crl+P). It might not be the printer but the communication btw it and Win 7, since this problem just started. I have searched for the solution to the problem on the Web, and there's nothing to be had except people with the same problem with other HP printers. I've seen nothing about people with this printer & the problem - - maybe I'm in the vanguard! So be warned.

You should be on the alert to go to the print-in-progress icon and open it quickly to cancel any multiples.

Would I buy this printer again if I read my own review? Maybe because of the price and my beloved 1000 LaserJet, but I would definitely do research on other brands.

Customer Review: I miss my old HP
Summary: 2 Stars

I am quite disssatisfied with this printer. It does the job, though, and was cheaper than most (though we'll see how much I spend on toner).

I previously had an HP Laser 1200?, which I had for a long time and was an incredible machine. It finally had to be replaced b/c I use my printer for my at-home work and the quality was starting to decline - not to mention toner price was going up. I assumed a new HP would do a better job. It doesn't.

-The print quality is awful.
-It cannot do a lot of printing all at once (the old one could go forever), it's gets too hot and the ink prints even worse and lighter.
-The ink rubs off when printing photos (doesn't affect the photo, just whatever it touches...)
- It sounds and looks cheap (I didn't think it did in the store)
- It doesn't take label paper and paper feeds as easily as other printers.
- the toner is expensive.

But, again, it was cheaper (got if for as much as my old toner cost - that is getting more expensive) and still an HP. It does take recycled content paper better than my other HP. I do appreciate that it responds quickly when it runs out of paper, and seems easier to access/keep free of debris. And it looks kinda pretty.

But that's not enough. I wish I could trade it in, but I needed it immediately for some heavey duty printing. I would love to still return it for something else, but my work already reimbursed me for it. I really dislike it.

Isn't newer supposed to mean better in terms of electronics? Has HP disgressed in its ability to make a good printer. Boo on you, HP! Make me something better! I miss my old HP.

Customer Review: Much faster than I expected
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm very happy with the printer so far - it's actually exceeded my expectations. I bought it one week ago to use for occasional but very important printing - I'm in law school, and when I need something printed, I need it NOW. :-)

I've used many printers in the past and always had good experiences with HPs. I also currently own the HP Color LaserJet 2605dn Printer (Q7822A#ABA) which is a $400 color laser (which has been excellent). Finally, HP is an American company, so I was specifically looking for an inexpensive HP laser printer when I bought this. I realize that I could have gone with a Brother laser for around $100 or so, but I need absolute reliability - no compromises whatsoever.

The bottom line is that it met all my expectations - small, quiet and great B&W output for documents. I don't print much graphics, so I can't comment on that aspect. By the way, I'm using it with a new MacBook Pro, and there have been no problems.

The printer exceeded my expectation with respect to the speed. It seems to print very fast - nearly as fast as a larger office HP. Just my subjective impression - I haven't timed it with a stop watch.

The only possible negative is that I didn't find an instruction manual included. Not even on the CD-ROM. It may be that I overlooked it because I was in a rush to get going. But HP has an excellent support website where one can download drivers and manuals for all models, even very old ones. Further, the set up and install of the printer has been just like every other HP printer I've used.

Customer Review: DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS 7!!!
Summary: 2 Stars

There are no HP driver currently available for Windows 7 for this printer. The HP Tech Guy (Syd) told me there will NOT be one available until January 2010!!!!!

There are no generic drivers that will work either, according to Syd. I've tried other drivers and nothing works.

Pros: I've tried it on Windows XP and it works. It is quick, but you get an HP pop-up every time to confirm you actually want to print anything, especially from the manual feed loader. Prints are crisp. Fonts look good. It's REALLY quiet! And I mean fast from an InDesign file with a lot of Postscript art overlapping one-another.

Cons: Constant Windos XP pop-ups wanting you to confirm you are printing something (just print the damn thing). It doesn't work with Windows 7 and drivers are not to be released by HP until January 2010. No way. No how. Syd confirmed this, so there's no doubt why this was being wholesaled (not by Amazon but by Big Box). Syd actually went on to say that no HP Laserjet will work with Win 7 right now????

Other thoughts: C'mon HP. You've had at least nine month to develop drivers for Windows 7. It was released to business as final code in July 2009. Final Release Candidate was in June 2009. What is the Problem? Syd said Microsoft had given vendors until January 2010 as a deadline, so that's HP's deadline. I don't understand this. Fail.

If you are running XP still, this is a functional little printer for small 8-1/2 x 11 B&W laser needs (which was why I purchased it), but I'm taking it back to Big Box (okay Best Buy) for my $99 and tax refund.

HP you disappointed me here...

Customer Review: MAC OS X work-around
Summary: 4 Stars

Got this from HP. It appears to be a MAX OS X problem, especially with MS OFfice Suite.
