Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP LaserJet P1006 PrinterCustomer Review: Important to play the CD first for correct installation info! Summary: 4 Stars
Since I have only had the printer a few days, I can only comment on my first impressions. I have always been an HP printer supporter from day one. I have tried other printers but unfortunately I haven't had very good luck with the others and specifically with the Epson Printers.
My trusted over the hill HP LaserJet 2100M which I've had since 1998 finally pooped out on me. I tried to find an equivalent printer thinking that the P1006 is inferior compared to the 2100M, and was hesitant to buy it. But now that I'm retired and on a limited budget, I really can't afford a very expensive printer and so I purchased the P1006 anyway.
Well so far I've been proven wrong in my way of thinking. This printer works admirably and prints darker and faster than my old trusted HP 2100M. As far as the noise is concerned, it may be just a wee bit louder than the 2100M but I can't be sure.
I used to be a PC and Software instructor for a major computer company and my printing requirements today are not as extensive as it used to be and all I need now is a solid printer that will print out a few pages of my DVD collection, email, receipts for items purchased through the internet and some occassional web pages.
I do have two (err!!) three printers. Two HP inkjet printers and this laser printer. The important thing to remember with the HP printers is to NOT PLUG IN THE PRINTER CABLE AND POWER UP THE PRINTER ... PRIOR ... to installing the printer driver. This is IMPERATIVE in most cases or you could have a ton of problems deleting the mess you've created and starting the installation over again.
SO BE WARNED in advance as I've run into a couple of problems in the past when I was in a hurry and DID NOT install the drivers first. VIEW THE CD FIRST as it gives SPECIFIC instructions as what to do .. like removing the Styrofoam inside the printer, a ring and a tape that covers the toner. If you are NOT aware of these and are in a big hurry, you could ruin the printer and make it a lot harder to get things going than it needs to be.
Other than that, enjoy what this printer has to offer. And for as cheap as it is ... it's a wonderful buy!
Oh YES, why it's not a 5 star? Because it just my initial impression. I will be back in a month and do an addendum.
August 22, 2009 update:
Have run into a minor problem in that sometimes the print on the printed material rubs off due to maybe a fuser problem. What do I mean by that? A laser printer works similar to a copier in that there is a drum where the images and for a lack of better word are etched into. This etched area then picks up the black toner and as it rolls on to the paper transfers the image into the paper. Then the paper goes through a heating element which fuses the toner into the paper.
In the olden days of the old Xerox copiers, there was something called fuser oil which helps fuse the image into the paper as it goes through the heating element. Don't know if the printers of today requires this fuser oil or maybe it's now part of the toner particles. I seem to have read somewhere where toner these days are a combination of black ink and plastic which is then fused into the paper? Maybe I read wrong, but regardless, if the imaged is not fused properly into the paper, the images will either not adhere to the paper or will sometimes rub off.
In my case it's not all of the printed copies and sometimes only part of the printed copy. Again, in the old days of the copiers, if the fuser oil is NOT distributed evenly in all areas of the printed material, the print will have a tendency to rub off in that area ... as is what sometimes happens on my printed copies.
The question now is whether the problem is with the PRINTER or with the PRINTER CARTRIDGE and or the toner material. I will certainly find out when it's time to replace the cartridge. If it ceases, then it would be a good indication that the cartridge is at fault. Will let you all know further on an update. Right now I still give it a 4 star.
Addendum (7/3/2010) OK here's the scoop and it's one of those DUH's! It completely skipped my mind but you really shouldn't try to print on labels that are made for INKJET printers. That's because some of them are especially coated to keep the LIQUID ink from smearing. If the paper is not coated then it acts like a blotter and it smears. Ink Jet printer papers are specially coated to try and avoid this. So when you run it through a laser printer, the toner will NOT adhere as well and may even flake off. Which is what I was running into.
