I saw similar items at Office Depot. However, I chose this item in order to increase my original order to make the $25 in order for the free shipping. I have five computers, one Dell Desktop, two Acer netbooks, three homebuilt desktops. On the Dell and the Acer computers, I was able to load an SD card from my Fuji Digital Camera and have the files opened and read with a little difficulty. What it means is that it took almost a minute to load and finally open correctly as thumbnails. With my homebuilt computers, opening files would stop at the directory level and you othewise could not get into your subdirectory. Theorectically, the drive reader should allow you to open files in any windows or linux based machine. However, with my homebuilts, it doesn't. My Dell machine at work has no problem. Everything looked OK and was able to play some of my video AVI files smoothly. As one reader suggested, an optional short extension usb cord is probably needed because the card reader is somewhat bulky and often does not fit next to another usb slot already in use. I would not recommend anyone purchasing this product. Works with computers which are probably stored bought and homebuilts are slightly questionable. Your choice. Good Luck.
