Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of BATTERY FOR IPOD PHOTO 4TH GEN 4G 20G 30G 60GBCustomer Review: can't beat the price Summary: 5 Stars
I have an iPOD 20GB model MP102 (sometimes mis-listed as M102 from HP) -- not photo, not color (pre-video). For some time now, when it was sitting on the charging dock, it said "charging," even though it had been plugged in for days or weeks or months (why is it charging if there's no possibility of it having been drained?). I went to use it last week and the center button could not be depressed/pushed. Being the person I am, I took it apart to investigate. (More on that later.) It turns out that the battery had expanded to the point that it interfered with the button. Yes, the battery was expanding, and it is in danger of exploding at some point, or causing a fire (plenty of stories out there revealed by a web search).
IF YOUR iPOD SEEMS TO BE CHARGING ALL THE TIME, PLEASE CHANGE THE BATTERY ASAP!!!!
...or have it changed. The same goes for any other device (cell phone, camera, etc.) with a rechargeable battery. Or I guess you could take the whole unit to your local hazmat collection -- should NOT be thrown into normal garbage because it can cause a fire. Same with the old battery if you decide to change it yourself.
Back on topic. I looked around, and this battery seems to be about the best value out there (might not be cheapest, but from a retailer with good ratings). Should give me significantly longer use on a single charge (although I don't usually use it off power). I thought this was worth a try.
A few notes on replacement batteries:
-- You need to use the same type (lithium ion/li-ion in this case) because the recharging mechanism in your device is designed and rated to handle only that type of battery.
-- It needs to be the same Voltage (7.3V) -- think of Voltage as the size of the nozzle that the juice runs through.
-- The Amperage (1200 mAh means "1200 milli-Amp-hours") does not have to be the same -- think of it as the size of the tank (but it'll only come out at the rate allowed by the Voltage). Original battery in my unit was 750 mAh, so I'm getting a battery with 60% higher capacity.
-- And it has to physically fit the space you're putting it into without interfering with other components.
So. Opening an iPOD is not particularly easy (goes hand in hand with the sleek case); there are several videos out there which show someone opening a unit that has clearly been opened before (it gets easier every time because the plastic gets stressed a little each time you open it). I found the plastic case-opening tools included with this kit to be completely useless. A long time ago, my father taught me to open such things -- carefully -- with a paring knife (as thin a blade as possible, doesn't usually need to be super sharp), and that's what worked for me. Depending on how careful you are with the case, you may end up with some minor scratches, but you shouldn't damage the working parts unless you really manhandle it. (And it is not the best thing for the knife, so don't use your partner's favorite knife.) And please be careful not to cut or stab yourself -- the iPOD, with its nice rounded edges, has a tendency not to stay still (which makes it a potentially dangerous target with a knife in your hands). If you're not comfortable, find a friend who is, or get it to a professional battery-changing place.
The properly-sized torx driver included with this kit is nice to have. I used a small flat-bladed driver to take out the internal screws before the kit arrived, but that's not generally recommended as you can ruin your screwdriver and/or the head of the screw (which means you can never remove it). With electronics, don't ever force a screw (in or out), or you risk permanent damage to the unit.
I was a bit worried when I compared the old battery (model 616-0198) with this one (replacement for model 616-0183), because this new battery is just a little taller than the original battery -- probably 60% more in area, since it has 60% more capacity -- but it went into my unit just fine and the unit seems to be working fine. No more charging when it ought to be fully charged. And the button works fine.
(Note: I suspect this slightly-larger battery might not fit if your iPOD has a hard drive greater than 20GB capacity -- which is likely physically larger, as well -- but you should be able to confirm the battery model with your capacity of hard drive. And if it doesn't fit, you've only wasted $8.)
The battery was delivered to my door in less than a week for about $8. Compare that to hundreds of dollars for a new iPOD or send-it-away-to-be-replaced for $50 or more, and this was definitely worth it for someone comfortable with taking apart electronics.
