Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Zune 8 GB Digital Media Player (Red)Customer Review: Player Unit itself is Ok, But the mandatory Zune Media Player Software Blows Summary: 3 Stars
I also own an 2009 ipod classic 160gb & creative zen v 8gb. Based on the player itself, it holds its own. The Zune battery life is not hitting specs, but that may be my fault in using a cheap taiwan after market charger. Sound Quality is pretty good & thank God as there is no EQ on this unit. The Zune uses a generous portion of its screen size on the cover art (more than ipod & creative screen is tiny) & is a strong point.
Even if the Zune unit was the best on the market I still would not buy another one due solely to the crappy, clunky & MANDATORY Zune media player software that one has to use. It is way worse than itunes & way worse than Microsoft's own Windows Media Player. I use the WMP with my creative zen & like it; stable & easy to use. Way in the world would Microsoft make its own Player uncompatible with the WMP?!?!?!? Makes no sense. Instead they force you onto the Zune software & that thing is buggy, unstable & just plain annoying....very difficult to sync, move stuff around, or do anything really.
I hate Zune due to their media player. Hey, Microsoft: stop trying to control everyone's downloads, purchases & listening enjoyment by forcing people on to your crappy software.
Customer Review: Hardware good enough but the rest of it is junk. Summary: 2 Stars
I got this Zune three years ago and loved it. It is great for music and also great for video's. Then I moved to Canada and none of the video's worked anymore and some of the music video's would no longer work. Apparently I can purchase some music but not all, a few music video's and none, nada of the TV shows I bought back in the states. I come to hate using the Zune Market place and will be figuring out how to get rid of it so that it can not work for someone else.
I tried looking for a place to complain on their website but no such luck. Perhaps they believe their product is of such great quality that it does not need a coustmer service area; where you can contact a rep and let them know what is going on. They do frequently refer to forums by users on the internet. These are truly smart folks but they do not work for the company and they aren't who I am looking to answer for. I want to replace my 8 gig Mp3 player with a larger machine but this has really put me off Zunes altogether. I think I'll work with someone who I can reach if I have a problem. I'll start by looking at Ipods.
Customer Review: I liked mine so much I bought one for my wife Summary: 5 Stars
I bought my zune a little over a year ago and it has worked great for me. I use it regularly plugged into my car stereo and on occasion I use it with headphones while I do things around the house. I have always been pleased with sound quality and the controls are very easy to use.
There was one time that it got disconnected from the sync cable while it was downloading and the screen froze. I had to go back to the user manual to figure out how to re-start it. After it restarted though it worked perfectly. I have very little to say about it's video capabilities because I never try to use them, but on the occasion that I have played with it, the picture is crisp and video seems to run smoothly. I prefer not to waste my time watching things on a 2 inch screen.
The worst I could say about it is that it seems that battery life starts to run a bit short when playing games or using the wireless networking features and while streaming via wireless from Zune Marketplace it sometimes has some buffering issues that makes listening a bit broken.
Customer Review: The coolest "different" DMP Summary: 4 Stars
It's a great device, easy to use, resistant (I dropped it once against a concrete sidewalk, it only suffered minor scratches on one side), long battery life -I updated the firmware as soon as Microsoft made it available, it solved some battery issues-. The "squircle" really stands out, it makes incredibly easy the navigation through the songs, playlists, pictures and videos. It's sensitive, but it will only respond to the touch or your finger, no problem with leaving the thing in your pocket or purse while it's on as it won't be affected by any object that could make contact with it. The squircle also controls the volume, but, unlike many players, I don't have to go through the menu and different screens, all I have to do is slide my finger up or down while a song or video is playing. The software is easy to use, it does what it has to do, still I'd rather to be able to sync the Zune with WMP, since it is my main player, but it's not a big issue. I haven't tried the wireless sync or transfer, there's nothing I can say about that.
Customer Review: Miss the simple days Summary: 5 Stars
I originally purchased a refurbished Zune from Amazon. I struggled with it for 2 weeks before sending it back. The battery would not hold a charge for more than an hour. I decided to try a new Zune and didn't have any of the problems of the refurbished.
I do miss the simple days of basic dragging and dropping music and playlists all on one screen. I find the Zune PC software far more complicated than it needs to be, and it is too large to download and run on my netbook. As far as I can tell, you have to have the software to play the zune on your PC, so that is a bit of a downer. (I used to have a sony mp3 player, I got used to plug and play)
It is getting tough to find accessories since Target stopped carrying Zune. But it works fine with universal accessories.
Outside of that, I am happy with it. Sturdy, portable, lightweight. It does everything a mp3 player is supposed to do, and a lot of other fancy stuff that I don't get around to using.
And it comes with a few nifty games- nice surprise.
