Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Zune 4 GB Video MP3 Player (Black)Customer Review: Better features, Better Sound, Better Device. Summary: 4 Stars
I am a gadget junkie, and most of my gadgets are music oriented as I am a musician and music lover. Two of my favorite things to get are music players and headphones. I have had many MP3 players since their conception, starting with a Creative Rio. Since then I have had a Creative Zen, 2 5th Gen iPods (30gig, one was a late 5th gen), a 1st and a 2nd gen shuffle, a 1st and 2nd gen nano, a 80gig classic, and 2 iPod touches 16gig. As you can see I am very experienced in the digital music player venue.
I do want to point out that I now only own one iPod my 2nd gen shuffle. 1 of my 5th gens was stolen while the other was traded in to get the 1st touch. The 1st gen Shuffle was washed. The 1st gen nano was actually 4, after the 4th defective one they gave me the 2nd which I fell on while skating and broke the screen. The 80gig classic broke and was not covered under warranty because I left it in the car in Arizona. The first touch would no longer sync and Apple would not replace so I got another that just broke after being dropped a week after I got it, this caused the back to fall off and again apple would not replace it. It held on fairly strong for a long time, but succumbed to it's injures.
Now to the review of the Zune 4gb. This is an old player now. I got it for my wife last year for her birthday. She loved it while she used it, but she eventually decided to put it in a drawer as she does not listen to a lot of music. It sat there for about 5 months, until my iPod touch broke. I asked if I could use the Zune, and she of course said yes, and I began using it about a week ago.
First I will cover the cons:
-While the Zune is plugged into the computer for some reason no other USB storage device will work in the computer. This is not a huge deal for me but to some could be a deal breaker right there.
-Pushing the middle of the control surface is slight hard. It is not an independent button so often I hit a direction instead of the OK. I am getting better though.
-While charging the light is constantly on. This could be a setting but none that I have found, and since I listen to music while I sleep this has been a problem.
-No EQ. This is an issue for some, but I really could careless. This is also a feature that could come back in a firmware update.
The Pros are:
-Built tough. I have dropped, sat on, and fell on this and just a few scratches.
-The sound is great. If you have good headphones you are in for a treat compared to the iPod.
-Purchase from the device. Because all Zunes's have WiFi getting new music is easy.
-FM Radio. The Zune can also ID songs from the radio and buy that song.
-WiFi Sync. This is great to update Podcasts and the like.
-Great display. The display is beautiful bright and clear.
-Xbox 360 integration. If you have one they go great together. Your LiveID can also be your ZuneID tying the two worlds together in a great pairing.
-The Zune Software. If you do not have a bunch of music tied up in iTunes the Zune software is great. Easy to use, beautiful and hip looking. Intuitive and has a social network integrated. I knot that the social aspect may not be a selling point to you but when added with the Zune Pass it is an iTunes killer.
-The Zune pass. This is, as I said, is the killer. For what turns out to be $5.00 a month(the price is $15 a month, but you can download any 10 songs to keep forever so 5 bucks), you get to download a ton of songs. It is true that there are a few songs that are not available, but I find very few. Being a huge music listener I listen to a lot of styles of music, and I am getting my fill. Add to that the social aspect(much like the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" that Amazon uses), and the "Channels"(think weekly radio programs where you get to keep the songs) that cover the top picks in every genre, the Billboard lists of that week, and the Zune DJ's weekly picks you have a great way to discover new music.
Overall I love the Zune. It may not be able to 'touch' the iPod Touch or be as 'popular' as an iPod, but if you are looking for something more like the Nano or Classic, and you are not stuck in iTunes, then I say go with a Zune. I will be getting a Zune 120 as soon as I can. Microsoft has a great product on their hands, and in my opinion with a few adjustments this very well could kill the iPod.
