Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Notebook Cooler, Silver, ZM-NC2000Customer Review: Loud and not ideal for 2011 MacBook Pro 17" Summary: 3 Stars
INTRODUCTION
Although I never had problems with my 2008 MacBook Pro 15" overheating or with component failure, I liked the idea of having the heat radiating from my new 2011 MacBook Pro 17 aluminum body (which acts like a heatsink) to be dissipated more rapidly with a "cooling" base.
The Zalman appealed to me because of its aluminum top, which can further act as a pseudo-heatsink, aesthetics, and the brand Zalman, which is known for their cooling solutions to those who build their own PC boxes.
I was, however, disappointed.
PROS
1. Great aesthetics. The wedge-like shape and aluminum color looks nice. The aluminum surface did not look as high quality as I expected, as it almost looked like colored plastic. Nevertheless, it still looked nice.
2. On/off button with blue LED light indicator
3. Ability to use a USB cable to connect your laptop to either the left OR the right side of the cooler.
4. Near perfect fit for the 2011 MacBook Pro 17"
5. Variable speed control for fans
CONS
1. Loud fans at any setting. Even at the lowest setting, the fans were loud even in a room with a television on. It is far louder than the internal fans of the MacBook Pro 17" which can sound moderately loud when they turn on.
2. Aluminum top is not what I expected in that it looked almost like plastic.
3. The entire bottom of the cooler is plastic, which is not a huge deal admittedly.
4. The cooling fan vents are located on the front half of the cooler, which is not great for MacBook Pro owners since most MBPs have their hottest bottom surfaces towards the rear of the computer (where the LCD panel hinges). The air could still travel under the laptop to the rear half, but it's positioning is not ideal.
5. Very small and thin rubber pieces on the cooler. The MBP would not slide off, but it didn't take a lot of effort for it to slide down the wedge-like cooler.
CONCLUSION
I really wanted to like the Zalman, because it looked like a premium cooler but it's just too loud. I had ordered separately a Logitech N100 cooler Logitech Notebook Cooling Pad N100 (Gray) separately for times that I wanted to sit on the couch with the laptop actually on my lap. I did not expect much from this cheaper, plastic, single fan Logitech, but it turned out to be more usable than the more expensive Zalman. It turns out that the Logitech was actually stable sitting on my desk and quieter than the Zalman. Until I find a better desktop oriented cooler, I have actually placed my MBP on top of the Logitech on my desk. The Logitech is not only quieter, but the rubber pieces on it hold the MBP more firmly and its fan is located towards the rear of the cooler, right under the hottest part of the MBP. I will have to continue my search further, possibly considering the Cooler Master cooler Cooler Master NotePal U3 Notebook Cooler with 3 Fans R9-NBC-8PCK-G.
