Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Xtremehd 2M HDmi To Hdmi CableCustomer Review: Works fine for Apple TV, but not as well with others. Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased several of these cables without doing much research because 1) they were cheap and 2) I've found xtrememac products to be very well made in the past from ipod/iphone cases to small electronics I've owned like the Luna. Since this is advertised as an HDMI 1.3 compliant cable, I assumed it would have no problems handling the high-bandwidth requirements of other HDMI 1.3 AV gear like those in my home theater setup. I was wrong. While I have not had any problems with Apple TV connected to one of the HDMI inputs in my Onkyo receiver which acts as an HDMI switch for several other components, I have had some HDMI handshaking problems and dropouts between my PS3, Xbox 360 Elite, and Sony BDP-S1 bluray player using the same xtrememac HDMI cable going to the Onkyo receiver. For the record, the Onkyo receiver was connected to a Samsung LCD at the time with a Bluejeanscable 24awg HDMI cable ($10). Initially, I thought there was something wrong with my Onkyo receiver or even how it communicates with certain HDMI 1.3 components. I updated the firmware, and rechecked all connections but the problems was still there. It wasn't until I swapped out the Xtrememac HDMI cables with various HDMI cables from monoprice and blujeanscable (all 24awg varying from $5-$15 in price) that the problems of dropouts and handshaking disappeared. It is worth noting that I did not have problems with the Xtrememac cables with my DirecTV HR20 HD DVR receiver. Based on this I have concluded that the Xtrememac HDMI cables simply cannot handle higher bandwidth transmissions in 1080p with multichannel PCM audio from the PS3, the Sony blu-ray player, and the Xbox 360 elite. Since the DirecTV receiver and the AppleTV only go as high 1080i, this further reinforces my notions.
So buyer beware! If you're looking to save some money on HDMI cables for your home theater setup, look elsewhere like monoprice or blujeanscable. The only reliable use I could get out of the Xtrememac HDMI cables was for my Apple TV and satellite receiver which both only run at a maximum of 1080i. They're very nice looking cables with quality written all over the jacket and connector casings, but unfortunately, that quality is only skin deep.
