Customer Review: After my iTrip died I decided to give the AirPlay FM a go.
Summary: 4 Stars
After purchasing an iTrip for my 3Gen iPod, I was initially quite taken with it. It was a neat little hack and it worked fairly well under most conditions. However, it wasn't too long before it started giving me problems and after about 10 uses, it just refused to be re-tuned to a different frequency (something that you're likely to need often if you're traveling around a bit). That happened just a day before I was planning a huge trip around the country and not wanting to take my chances with another iTrip, I decided to see what else was available. The AirPlay had been given fairly mixed reviews but I figured there were enough good ones to give it a try. I'm really glad I did, as I've been totally happy with it.
With my iTrip, the coverage was pretty terrible. If it wasn't sitting within 5" of my car stereo, the reception would be fuzzy. With the AirPlay I can be anywhere within the car (maybe further, but I haven't tested it) and the reception is clear. Really clear!
Tuning the AirPlay is super-simple - just as it should be. With any FM transmitter like these, you'll need to spend a bit of time finding a frequency that doesn't interfere with any other stronger signals. That used to drive me mad with the iTrip (the process would take roughly 1-2 minutes to do with lots of menu-surfing on the iPod), but with the AirPlay it's so sweeeet (and will probably only take 10-20 seconds to do)!
It must be said that I've only been using the AirPlay for about 20 days but it has definitely outlived my iTrip, and while the unit may not look as iPod-like as the iTrip, that is outweighed immensely by its simple functionality.
