Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert PeriscopesCustomer Review: Easy to use and reliable. Summary: 5 Stars
I needed a detector to warn of forward facing radar fitted to the Municipal Enforcement Officers cars in my home town. These determine your speed as they drive towards you. They then swing round and give you your ticket.
This detector started working immediately. My detector alerted me to two cars parked in along the road to my left as I approached the traffic signals, long before it was possible to see them. My wife had the same positve experience on her first trip out with the detector.
They also use laser in my town, this takes 2-3 seconds before it locks onto your vehicle displaying your speed, so you do not have much time to react. As soon as you receive a warning of laser, you will need to reduce your speed as quick as possible to that of the posted limit.
All in all a cheap, simple device that gives you a some advance warning of impending doom, (just my opinion of the Municipal Enforcement,).
Customer Review: Works great, but... Summary: 5 Stars
This is the first Laser/Radar detector I ever owned. I bought it because I always wanted one but they were too pricey for my pocket book. I waited years until finally now many types can be had for under $50. This Whistler XTR-140 has all the bells and whistles (excuse the pun) you can use. It's a duzzy and works just fine. But,... and here's the rub... seems I've waited too long because I found out that radar detectors have had their day... they are almost rendered obsolete what with modern pulse laser and radar targeting systems that, in the blink of an eye, have pin-point accuracy and photo-capture capability that many police departments now possess. I even wrote the manufacturer about this and they admitted there's not much you can do to counter such stealthy detection... split second targeting and your caught. Their suggestion? Get behind another vehicle and hope they get caught before you! Ha. I don't need a radar detector for that!
Customer Review: Not worth the money Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this product to replace a Uniden detector that I had for 16yrs. To begin with, far too short a distance before the alarm goes off. By the time you get an alert, chances are you're being clocked. As for the super bright readout, it's bright allright. Too bright. At night it lights up the inside of my vehicles cab. Extremely noticeable from behind when the alert goes off. I almost wish that I had paid the extra $10.00 for a model with a dimmer switch. I felt that was too much extra to pay for that simple feature. The exclusive twi-alert periscopes. Not necessary, one would suffice. The unit comes with a suction cup mounting bracket that will only stick to your windshield, unless you have a dashboard that's as smooth as glass. Will not stick to textured surface. You'll need to use velcro. Price is low, but like so many other products, you get what you pay for. Overall, not happy with this product. Would not recommend this to a friend.
Customer Review: Good for the price Summary: 4 Stars
Had it for a couple of months and am very happy with it. It has regularly picked up police radars long before I spot them, even behind hills (luckily I live in Florida so not many of those to contend with!). The laser detection is fair also. Compared it alongside a V1 and the difference is barely noticeable - the V1 beeps maybe a half second before the XTR did.
Some minor complaints: It gives out TONS of false alarms, especially when I'm driving around town - OK so it's a fun geeky thing to know when I'm half a mile from an automatic door, but still it drives my SO batty when she's in the car! The VG-2 detector appears to give a lot of false alarms (unless Florida law enforcement really do have them scattered every few miles, which I doubt) but it's disabled by default so no big deal. Finally, I would have liked either to see a separate Ka indicator or have it blink on K band detection instead.
Customer Review: Great price? No, nothing more than an expensive sound effects box. Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased the Whistler XTR-140 because of the great price and the high Amazon ratings. I don't know who these folks are giving it five stars because the unit was worthless to me. I returned it to Amazon for a full refund.
The device would only sound its alarm(s) when it picked up spurious non-law enforcement signals. The sensitivity to these spurious signals between city settings and highway was not discernible.
But the big kicker was that this unit never sounded an alarm when it was obvious that the police were taking laser/radar readings. This wasn't just one municipality but the following over the course of two weeks:
Richardson, TX
Plano, TX
McKinney, TX
Van Alstyne, TX
and two DPS troopers, one along U.S. 75 in Anna, TX and another east of Van Alstyne, TX.
If anything, this device proves the axiom of "you get what you pay for".
