Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert PeriscopesCustomer Review: not required in eastern NY Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this radar because every weekend i drive 30 miles back and forth between my college and home. Its a horrible, long and boring, drive for 36 miles with nothing but highway. I wanted to get one of these so I could just go a little over 70 and make the drive more bearable. The problem is that before I bought one of these, I was already driving 70, 80, and sometimes 90 on the highway and no cops were even there to get a reading. I tried this out and it never gave me any warnings. In town, the stop lights made it beep and light up, but that is not what I am concerned with. Perhaps it works great in other states but the police do not really patrol as hard here, so essentially this was a waste for me.
Not saying the device is bad, but after getting it I realize there is barely any cops to even use this on where I live(long island). When I do see people get pulled over, its usually for drunk driving, I always see people doing 90 without any trouble. Perhaps I will update this in the summer when perhaps more people are speeding and cops are able to sit on the highway for a while(instead of winter and fall).
Customer Review: Good product Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this Whistler radar/laser detector last week because I wanted something to have in either of my cars when I drive in town. There are always cops around clocking & doing laser so I wanted an upperhand on some of that. I bought this product based on the reviews, ratings & comments I reviewed for about 20 minutes. I decided for $40 you can't beat a deal like this. This is my 1st detector too. I got the detector in the mail today, hooked it up in my car & it turned on automatically. Everything works great, it is bright at night & very loud. I tested this device in both the city & on the interstate. It went off a few times & one of the times there was a police car parked on the side of the hwy. with his lights off clocking. My K/KA light went off like crazy too. I'm sure the cop saw it, lol. It was like fireworks were going off but at least I know this works! It sure does help to have it in the car since one of my cars is a fast car. I would recommend this for somebody who hasn't owned a detector yet. Even though the alarms sometimes are false, that's a good thing because it'll keep you on your toes.
Customer Review: i have never wrote 1 of these things. Summary: 5 Stars
i bought this xtr-140 detector about a week ago online due to receaving about 4 speeding tickets in the last couple months. it was almost 50 dollars less than the exact same 1 at bestbuy. today on drive home it beeped for the first time since i hooked it up then beeped more blue led lights light up and went nutts. it picked up a cops radar on the other side of a huge hill and down a straight stretch of road about a half mile. and the cheapest speeding ticket ive receaved has been 175 dollars, so this detector has paid for itself over three times allready on its first use. this is the first detector i have ever owed and didnt really know how to compare all the differant options these things have or what they even ment. the blue led lights are extreamly bright and noticable and the beep is a extreamly high pitch, it also has a volume up down turn nob so you can also turn the load beeps off and just use the blue led lights. like i said before i have never wrote about a item before or owned a detector but would definately recommend this detector to anyone looking for one and allready have.
Customer Review: Does everything it is supposed to do Summary: 5 Stars
I have two other older whistler products and have been fully satisfied with their performance. This was an upgrade for my wife as hers has seen some better days and I have to tell you it is a tremendous value. My philosophy on this is if it saves me from one speeding ticket then it has paid for itself.
I read some other reviews of other folks that seemed very dissatisfied with theirs but I think that those folks may not understand how a radar detector works. This device is not a police officer detector which is what I feel some other people expect it to do and just because there is a police officer parked nearby does not mean that they have their radar/laser gun on.
I feel this device is very sensitive which could have its downside but I would rather just lift my foot off the pedal than not be forwarned at all.
Very happy with the product, design, and performance. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and if you dont like it then go ahead and spend hundreds of dollars on something that does the same thing.
Customer Review: Surprisingly Good Summary: 4 Stars
Purchased this as a 3rd car 'peace of mind' unit. Being bored and a natural busybody, the first thing I did was run the Whistler in a side-by-side comp with the Escort Passport in one of the other cars. I was pleasantly surprised that this Whistler caught all of the same alerts as the Escort. It wasn't able to reject most of the subtle false alarms caused by automatic doors etc., but I really hadn't expected it to do so. The Whistler is a compact, light weight unit, and the windshield mount is rock solid. Only time will tell whether or not the small suction cups on the mount will hold up for the long run. Another plus is the straight power cord (the coiled type always seem to be 3-4 inches shorter than necessary).
If you want bells, whistles, gps, updatable databases and endless mode adjustments, it's best you look elsewhere. You are not going to get $400 performance from a $40 unit. If you want basic, accurate alerts across the full spectrum of radars and lasers, this little Whistler is as good as I have seen.
