Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert Periscopes

Customer Review: Please Read BEFORE you buy!
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this device because my older Beltronics detector needed a new power cable. i bought this because it was cheap, and because i thought i needed a new device.
but buying this device was a mistake. just because it was cheap was not a good reason to buy. compared to my Bel, this unit is very, very poor quality. i almost never pick up signals and i even got a ticket while using this device, after a cop checked my speed with a radar that this device is supposed to pick up.
if you think spending $40 is a good deal for a radar detector, well think again. maybe there are good detectors for this price range but not this one. next time i buy i will spend more money on a decent one and save myself money on speeding tickets (which i know i shouldnt do because speeding is bad :P but thats why you're reading this review anyway...)
If youre like me and speeding just happens when you drive and you would like some help seeing the cops that can give you a ticket, buy a different product.
And i might add, that there is no compensation from Whistler for faulty units. i've contacted them and i just had some employee tell me that radar detectors dont always pick up signals.

I got this Whistler to replace my old 2 year $200 RD. Well this one doesn't offer you POP mode, so if you get caught in an instant radar/laser check you will get no warnings before you get hit! Well the first 3 months or so when I bought this Whistler, it worked great! I got about 99% out of 100% radar/laser warnings. I did notice that after 3 months this radar detector isn't working as good as it did for the first 90 days.

This radar detector works great for photo and red light camera detection. It doesn't work so good on the highway or city traveling. I haven't received any tickets yet, but I would say this RD gives alot of false warnings. If you do have more money to spend, I would get another brand. The XTR-140 has served me well so far but I think I will be making a change to another RD with POP mode. The visuals led at nights is cool, and the twin alert flashes is also a great feature.

This RD is for a casual driver who drives from home to work. I wouldn't try to use this RD for road trips or long trips between city to city. You get about a 1/4 mile range with this. In the city I would say about 1,000 feet or less or buyer beware!

I recently bought this detector for my wife since she racked up a few tickets lately, and it has blown me away! I have an older Whistler 1545 detector that is pushing 10 years old now, and this one destroys it (even though the old one cost twice as much). The blue lights are a real attention-getter and the volume dial is a treat (something my old one doesn't have one). This baby picks up waaay farther than my old unit. It picked up a county Sheriff last night over half a mile away, over a HILL! It also caught the splash back from one of the automated radar warning signs they park on the highway (the "Your Speed Is__" things). We were coming up to it, it was 100 yards ahead of us facing oncoming traffic (away from us), and the detector caught the reflected radar waves bouncing off the oncoming trucks. Unbelievable. You would expect his level of performance in the $100-$200 detectors, but not from one that was under 40 bucks. This baby is a real gem.

Needless to say, I am buying another one to replace my old Whislter! Highly recommended.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy set-up, user friendly, exceptional performance.

Cons: None yet.

Customer Review: GREAT FOR THE PRICE
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this in January 2010 and haven't travelled enough to use it till recently. I really don't speed, but I like to have it for those moments when you aren't watching your speed and it is a reminder to slow down. It works just great and gives plenty of warning. Came upon three highway patrolmen with radar going just today and it picked up every one in ample time to slow down. Other things I like: The blue "warning" lights on top; it doesn't sound alarms unnecessarily when near hospitals, motels, etc.; and it is small.

This is the first Cobra I have ever owned and I would buy it again. I have had other radar detectors, other brands, and this works better than they. Also my husband has a very expensive one I bought for him two Christmases ago, different brand, and this Cobra works better.

I highly recommend this. Of course I imagine the price may help my feeling of satisfaction with this Cobra, but as I said, I have had other radar detectors and this one works better; so, I don't think the price influences me. I was afraid it would be terrible since it was so inexpensive. Surprise! I think it's GREAT!

The Wife

Customer Review: Good cheap Radar Detector / without the bells and whistles u never use
Summary: 4 Stars

Ok, this is my 2nd "Cheap" (read below $50) radar detector. The earlier one was from Cobra (very good too). I'd planned to get the same model for my wife's car as well (she recently got a ticket :( ). But while browsing Amazon I came across this model, good / cheap / functional. What i liked was the "Blue" indicator lights (really cool at night) and the visual signal strength meter.

Both are very similar, however for $5 more the Whistler is a little bit more sensitive (both give u enough time to slow down). However the audible alerts on the Cobra are more pleasant... u know the tonal quality and stuff. The whistler audible alerts are very harsh... and if u live in a city zone like me.. that means constant irritating noise from the harmless radar doors, safety radars, etc...

Otherwise, the cobra is smaller (+1 point). Whistler has longer cord (+0.5)

Overall both are good and for under $50 each, I'd say get one of both yourself. Good investments against tickets / insurance rate hike...

Other than the audible alerts, I like the whistler better though :-)

Hope this helps.
