Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Whistler XTR-140 Laser/Radar Detector with Exclusive Twin Alert Periscopes

Customer Review: Not a lot of use (yet), but great for the price.
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little skeptical about the Whistler XTR-140 at first because of the very low $46.66 pricetag (compared to most other radar detectors being in the $200 range), but after reading all of the positive reviews I ordered it. The windshield mount is small, easy to put on, and the quick release on the detector is an excellent feature since I can easily put the detector away. Most don't do this but I'm paranoid after my sister got hers' stolen. The device is very simple to operate as well. As soon as you turn it on, you can adjust the volume accordingly. I have music playing all of the time so this is a great feature. Personally, I rarely find myself using the City Mode to quiet some of the weaker radar bands from automatic doors and such, but the times I have used it, it performed excellently. Detection wise this detector hasn't seen this much action, but I have been saved once when the detector chirped and the blue LED's blinked (also an excellent feature for when you quiet the device) and lo and behold, the cop was about half a mile in front of me, behind some trees. I have accepted that speeding is a fact of life and it gets me where I want to go just a little faster and the Whistler allows me to do that more safely since I am not looking for cops the entire time, and the ability to speed (still no more than nine over the limit) with a little more peace of mind.

Customer Review: I now have my first ticket in 15 years. Terrible.
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this for my father, a speed demon, this christmas and since he is not too tech savvy decided to get one for myself first just to test it and see how it works. I figured this would be a perfect time considering that I was going on a 2,000 mile road trip to visit friends and family. So off I went, a little skeptical at first just trying to see if I would get a beep then shortly after see the police. Nope. Many times I passed police and heard nothing. It did seem to beep at truckers often though. Anyway, about 700 miles of this same experience until one time it beeped then i saw cop car about 5 seconds later. So i thought ok let me pick up speed a bit hoping I was protected. Bad move..
I was going 83 in a 70 and right when I passed cop car... I mean directly in his view of radar it beeped, 2 minutes later so did his sirens. I have not received a speeding ticket in nearly 15 years until now. I generally try to follow speed limit but with this device I thought I was safe to speed up my trip a bit. I mean what point is this if it beeps directly in front of radars... It seems to beep at the same times I would see the cop cars giving me 1 to 0 seconds to adjust speed. I can not afford this ticket and am now in a predicament. This product was a great disappointment.

Customer Review: Bought for a road trip, well worth it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the XTR-140 for a road trip. I traveled through many states and 3500+ miles so I got to use the detector extensively. I have to completely agree with the positive reviews I have read. Yes there were a number of what appeared to be false warnings. I say this because on desolate roads where there was practically nothing I got a warning. If you read the information on the Whistler site, the more expensive a detector is the less false warnings you get, fair enough I suppose. The valid warnings were correct and properly alerted me to radar traps. In one case the person in front of me and myself were going well over the speed limit, the alarm went off, I slowed down quickly, having seen other cops in the same populated area, and sure enough a cop came ripping out from behind a bridge in front of me and pulled over the other driver. If I had not slowed down that very well could have been me or both of us. Just that one incident made this worth the price many times over. I had a few other cases as well, including just getting ready to pass someone and the warning saved me again. Note that the five star rating is not for someone that expects perfect detection. If that is you, look at the expensive $400+ models. The five stars are for a GREAT value and decent, acceptable detection.

Customer Review: Radar Detector???
Summary: 1 Stars

I am not sure how the reviews and experiences can be so widely varied with this product. This radar detector wouldn't work if it was sitting on the officer's dash. I read many of the reviews and especially read the on star reviews. I thought some of the one star reviews were just complaining, but others I took it in and said, "for $30, if I make a mistake, it's only $30." Well, I made a mistake. I am not mad, just disappointed that the manufacturer would present this product to the public. I seriously don't believe this radar detector would warn anyone with enough warning before the officer could clock your speed.

I have only had the detector one week, but traveled over 1000 miles this past week, as I commute approximately 85 miles each way to the office. I generally set my cruise at 74mph passing troopers without adjusting my speed. I have passed officers on the highway and in the city (12-15 in total) where the detector never went off or he was on top of me or I was on top of him and it was only giving an intermittant signal as if he were 1/4 mile away. So in conclusion, if $30 means a lot to you, please don't purchase this product. You would get much more satisfaction by giving the $30 to a homeless person.

Customer Review: Great buy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Nice quality. No nonsense.

Picks up some stray X from industrial parks or commercial buildings occasionally in Highway mode if buildings are adjacent to interstate, BUT these signals easily discerned giving only one bar on strength meter, and a couple warning only chirps.

However, first night out, I had my unit reach three bars, light up the entire display like a Christmas tree, blip the periscopes constantly, basically seemed like the thing was going to implode ("scary"), and then I saw the cop! He was about 3/4 mile away, opposite side of interstate facing me with a victim pulled over, lights flashing.

Caught him a second time while exiting an off ramp in a hotel parking lot perpendicular to me prior to that with another victim! "Big, bad, Dodge Hemi" cruiser, all painted up with intimidating graphics. "Big bad", muscle car, chase car with undoubtedly the latest radar.

All I know is that this little $38 Whistler "smells" his butt a mile away like a geiger counter detecting radiation! He hangs in the same geographic area around my workplace constantly busting people (a real worka"ho"lic), but now I can "smell" him a mile away for $38!

Me like!
