Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital WD5000KSRTL/WD5000AAKS Caviar 500 GB SATA Hard DriveCustomer Review: Excellent Hard Drive for the Mac Pro Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased three of these for my Mac Pro Quad Core desk top which I purchased at Amazon. One 500Gb is set up as stand-alone/backup hard drive and Two 500Gb are set up as a RAID. They installed very quickly without any issues at all, are fast and work well with a Dual Processor Intel system, and are super quiet. I emphasize how quiet they are since I've had many Maxtor brand hard drives which while are quite reliable as well, but, seem to vibrate annoyingly at a frequency that resonates through the PC case. These WDs are in fact much quieter considering that TWO of the 500 GB SATAs plus another stand-alone 250 (comes with the Mac Pro for OS/boot drive) and a 3rd 500 Gb WD SATA drive of the same model (a total of four installed) are all installed and running so quietly. There's no noise or vibration to hint that 4 of these are inside the Mac Pro case. Read and Write performance on both the RAIDS and stand alones has been excellent. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Great Drive that has not failed yet in 24/7 operation Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this drive specifically to expand my Series 3 tivo. After doing some research, i settled on this one because of its price, performance, and that its noise levels. There are drives specifically made to handle continuous operation. I have had the drive running in the enclose for 8 months and aside from power outages theis drive has never failed in the Antec MX-1 enclose that I have it in. When ther TV is off and nothing else is running, I do hear some access noises, but comapred to other desktop drives I have, even from WD, this one is pretty quiet. there is one other drive (can't rememeber model designation) that is specifically for DVR's and digital survailance systems that are constantly writing to the disk that is supposed to perorm better and quiter, but it was almost 50% more at the time I made my purchase.
I would defiinitely recommend this drive and if you are getting and external, heck out the MX-1
Customer Review: I hate Western Digital! Bought 2 drives - 4months ltr one dead! Summary: 1 Stars
I built my 'super computer' a year ago with two of these drives. I have used Maxtor drives for the past 20 years with NO problems. I decided to try WD because of the price and recommendations. Built my desktop beast with screaming Intel Dual Core plus 4GB ram (a lot at the time), 500 Meg Video, two 500gb WD drives. Everything was fine until only 4 months ... my main drive began clicking. Boot would see the drive but windows XP did not! I was mortified!!!!! I tried everything but could no longer access the drive!!!! So my success rate with Western Drives is 50% which is horrible!
My success rate with Maxtor drives (I have owned over ten) is 100%. This does not speak well for WD.
I tried to get support for this drive and couldn't get any. They said I could get my money back. I WANTED MY DATA
Western Digital - Never Review: Great drive, not so great manual Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this drive to replace a failing external LaCie 250GB drive.
So far so good, the drive works well, silent and fast.
I just had a hard time getting it online. Actually, the installation manual was not very helpful.
I had to use the F2 setup screen to enable the 2nd internal hard drive. It was disabled as a factory default and nothing in the manual nor on WD web site was pointing in that so simple setting problem.
BTY, WD web site has only 10 FAQ and the customer support is open only during US business hours, so for me, it is hard, I can do this only after business hours. I am working you know.
Once over it, everything went smooth, The initialization phase was surprisingly fast for such large drive (set up as slave).
I still give it a good price quality ratio. If I go installing internal stuff, I have to be kind of a geek.
Customer Review: Will not buy a WD bare drive again Summary: 1 Stars
Trouble started the day the Wdigital Bare Drive came home. I was eager to feed it with all the critical data and foolishly did so. Suddenly, one day out of the blue (after 11 months of use) the drive stopped being readable. Lost lot of important data that cannot be retrieved and I tried every thing possible to retrieve it. The formatting was not easy either. My Windows Vista machine would not recognize it. Tried several times before moving it to my Windows 7 and it worked after 3 attempts. A scan revealed that my drive also has bad sector problems. My usually fast Windows 7 OS machine has slowed down.
There were read errors too. The droning sound that this hard drive makes does not allow me to concentrate on my work. There are no cables included in this package. I will not buy a WD product again and would not recommend it to others.
