Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: This is a must buy Summary: 5 Stars
I just got around to getting a 42 inch Sony last week, so I started recording my shows in HD. The quick and ugly truth that the 20 hours of HD space on the SA 8300 DVR wasn't going to be enough hit home very fast, so after browsing the overwhelmingly good reviews posted here I ordered one myself.
Like folks say, the setup is fast and simple, no problems at all, unplug the 8300, plug the data cable into the DVR and the expander, plug in the expander, plug in the DVR, the DVR boots , asks if you want to format the drive, press the yes button and you are done. 75% free space now, time to fill it up. 8')
The unit is lightweight, and the power on light is a dim amber that doesn't annoy the eye. The unit also has a thin rubber edging around it to make it non slip. Bronx, NY Cablevision box btw
Customer Review: Easiest part of buying a Tivo, more storage Summary: 5 Stars
The only thing Tivo's done right (besides allowing you to share your media with your networked computers) is additional storage via eSATA external harddrives.
My Wireless G USB Tivo adapter didn't work without a software upgrade to my Tivo DVR (it came with software that was 2 years out of date). My Tivo DVR had out of date software, the cable card you are required to get to make it work is not compatible with ONDEMAND, and it costs about 200x as much as just renting a Comcast DVR.
If not for the ability to add the additional storage and export media to my computer, my Tivo DVR would have been a complete rip off. As it is, I still feel cheated.
But hey, at least the 500 GB storage adapter by Western Digital is easy, inexpensive, and doubles the capacity of my Tivo DVR.
Customer Review: Just right Summary: 5 Stars
I have a DirecTV HD DVR. This is compatable with the DirecTV DVR HR20 and up. Simple to install (One cable). Works perfect. A word of caution. No matter what anyone else says, at least with DirecTV; this becomes the only drive. You cannot access shows on the DVR's drive without a huge hassle. I started re-recording shows on the new drive for my kids almost immediately, and copied to DVD anything else I didn't want to "lose". 500GB may not seem like a lot to some, but I expect it to exceed my needs for years. I DVR shows in HD that I think will be HD worthy. Other than that, my kids can watch Spongebob in in standard definition. Unless you only DVR in HD, this drive is plenty big (App 100 hrs of HD or 300 hrs of SD, or a combo). For $94 (current price) and free shipping, it has breathed new life into my DVR.
Customer Review: Died after six months Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this in October and by December, I was having trouble with the loosely-connected cables. The TIVO would not recognize that the drive was attached. I would have to unplug and reconnectly constantly until it worked. Then, finally in March, it died completely (taking all my recordings with it) and I sent it in for a replacement...which is when the real fun began. Western Digital has TERRIBLE customer service. I overnighted the unite to their RMA department, where it sat in their receiving warehouse for a full week without being logged into the system. It was only after I called and gave them my UPS tracking number that they finally changed the RMA status to "received." Fast forward a week later and I am still waiting for them to ship the replacement unit. Not worth it. Get the TIVO XL instead.
Customer Review: DVR Expander...Awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
With all of the HD programming available now, this is an awesome way to save many of your shows until you can find the time to watch them. Works great and expands your HD recording on the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD cable box from just under 20 hours to almost 100 HOURS of HD programs. The only risk is that the unit is an external hard drive which is always subject to breaking down without warning. (Read reviews on just about any external hard drive and you will hear about the sad record of external hard drives in general.) Of course, the HD-DVR cable box itself is mainly just an external hard drive for storing programs, so the box itself is always "at risk" of failure. Still, for the money, you cannot beat the convenience of having the additional 80 hours of HD recording. You must have it!
