Despite countless reviews and titles that state that this drive is meant for a TIVO, you can definitely use this device for your PC as a media back-up drive. All you need to have is an e-sata port and then just plug it in, and it works. It functions exactly the same as a USB external except it is much faster (3gb/s esata). I have been using it for a small amount of time so far but it has worked great for reformatting my other external to NTFS and for holding all of my HD movies (720p dvd and 1080p bluray). I found it on ebay for about $50 so it was quite a steal!Customer Review: Works well with my Tivo 3 HD

First, I tried a standard WD 500 GB external hard (e-sata connection) and my Tivo box would not recognize it. I took it back to Best Buy and purchased this WD DVR expander from Amazon. It arrived within a few days (2 day shipping was well worth it) even though it was the week before Christmas. It took me about 15 minutes to install after two reboots (first one didn't work). The instructions are simple...almost too simple so they appeared a little vague to me. But, it worked fine and has been a wonderful addition to our Tivo. I am using with a Tivo Series 3 HD DVR. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. It is not as simple as just plugging in, there are some other things you must do, but it is pretty much idiot-proof. My install took about 10 minutes and a few Tivo restarts. One important note: unless you plan to put this right next to your DVR, buy a longer cable. I purchased 2 of these...they were very easy to install on the Time Warner, Scientific Atlanta 8300 cable boxes.
One worked but it killed the on screen cable guide.
The other one worked but on occasion the recording stopped before the end of the program (eg: record 45 min of a hour program) but other times it would record the entire program --- you never knew what to expect. Once I removed this device the Scientific Atlanta's internal hard drive would record programs as expected.
These are now expensive paper weights.

I bought two of these drives over a period of time. The 1st one lasted about 1 year and I thought my Tivo died. But then found out after Tivo replaced my Tivo at a price -- that it was actually the Western Digital My DVR Expander that died. Okay, so now that I know the 1st one died I hooked up a new Western Digital My DVR Expander. It lasted several months before it died. What a waste of money -- stay away from Western Digital products at all costs, even if it's free what good is it if you lose the shows/movies you have not watched yet!!!
