Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: Failed from the start; couldn't get replacement Summary: 1 Stars
This is a great idea - if only it had worked. I had trouble with the expander from the outset, but I wasn't able to diagnose that the secondary hard drive was the problem Eventually the hard drive caused the TIVO to stop working altogether and had to be disconnected from the system. The folks at Western Digital refused to replace it because I had not diagnosed that the secondary hard drive was the source of the problems I was having with my TIVO within the warranty period. Perhaps I'm unusually fortunate - I've never had trouble with a hard drive before, but at $200, it was an expensive mistake.
Customer Review: Easy setup compared to building my own! Summary: 5 Stars
I have COX cable in Phoenix, AZ and I'm using the COX 8240HDC DVR and the DVR expander works fine. I estimate that it increased my capacity from 30 hours of High Def to 120 hours (4 times more).
Because this drive is only 500Gigs, I tried building my own DVR expander by buying an eSATA cable and a Western Digital 1TB drive from Costco but I just couldn't get it to work with my COX DVR.
Save yourself the hassle and frustration and get this DVR expander drive!
3-1-2010 update: The unit died just a little over a year old.
Customer Review: Works as advertised Summary: 5 Stars
Plugged this into my Time Warner-issued Scientific Atlanta 8300HD according to the directions, and in no time I had about five times the storage capacity as before. It's seamless; everything's still all in one menu, and you don't know which drive programs are being stored on. It jus tworks. Operates quietly. I'm not sure why I need the glowing orange CBS eye on the front of it, but it's not overly bright and you get used to it. There's no real reason to put the unit within view since there are no controls to operate, so if the eye bothers you, stash the drive behind your DVR or something.
Customer Review: Lifespan Summary: 1 Stars
I, like many others, was attracted to this unit by it's promised simplicity of expansion for my TiVo Series III HD. I bought it a little less than 2 years ago. it worked up until about a month ago when I began to experience pixelation, audio dropouts, and grey screens on certain channels. It turns out the the expander was failing. I did manage to get most of my recordings transferred before it completely failed. I'd rate the lifespan as totally unacceptable. A quick scan of forums like AVS shows that a lot of people are now experiencing these failures. I would not buy one again.
Customer Review: No worries Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this to go with my HD TiVo. Followed the directions and it was really simple to set up (there is one trick, I think you have to power off the TiVo and boot the drive first, then boot the TiVo). I have not thought about it at all since then, but we have over 100 suggestions now and never have to worry about having a recording deleted accidentally. This really made the HD TiVo more useable; without it the HD programming filled the drive in about 10 days. (Our TiVo's drive was not the largest we could have got; I think we got an HD TiVo that's not the one named Series 3.)
