Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: BEWARE: Do NOT Buy Expander Now Summary: 5 Stars
Beware that digital rights management by TIVO is implemented by splitting each recording between the TIVO DVR and the Expander shown here. Once hooked up the two devices can not be divorced without losing all you programs on both the TIVO and the Expander.
If you are like my wife you will loose a lot of movies stored for later viewing. Wait for HDD or when your TIVO drive is filled up before committing. YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOSE YOUR EXPANDER BEFORE YOUR TIVO GOES, if you value your recordings. The average life of one of these HD expanders is 3-5 years or, if you have a defective one like mine, less than 2.
Customer Review: DVR Storage Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know about you but I like to watch TV without the commercials. There are quite a few programs that are in High Def. and take up allot of space and some nights there are two on at a time. Sometimes 3 or 4 programs at a time so the DVR's fill up fast. With the addition of this hard drive you can fit quite a bit more and once installed you don't have to do anything. It works seamlessly and you won't even know it is there. The only difference is it holds a lot more programs. It is easy to install all you have to do is plug it in reboot format when it tells you to and that is it you are done. So easy anyone can do it.
Customer Review: HD failed after 1 month Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased an HD Tivo and DVR expander about 2 months ago. After about a month the Tivo started freezing and failing to record. This problem became more and more frequent, and after a few weeks the Tivo was unusable. I called Tivo tech support and they suggested I disconnect the expander. This solved the Tivo problem. Amazon won't take the expander back because I've had it for more than 30 days. I went to the WD website, and they will replace it under the warranty. I hope the second one works better. Update: The replacement also causes my Tivo to freeze. Until WD and Tivo fix this problem, don't buy this for a Tivo HD.
Customer Review: No worry! My Girl Holds All My Movies for Me! Summary: 5 Stars
I was very skeptical about the purchase, But My cable provider (Optimum NY) said it was compat so I waited till I caught a good sale $86 @ DELL! And jumped on it! I've had it 4about 2.5 weeks and shes Great! Very small foot print. Every time I record HD content she moves either 1% or 2% opposed to B4 I got her it was 7-8% Big difference! I made a mistake and unplugged my Cable box, after plugging it back in she just told me what happened and told me the right way to disconnect :) And I also unplugged her by mistake, Did not lose any movies :) Go out or order online and get this she wont let ya down!"
Customer Review: Blessing for HD DVR recording Summary: 5 Stars
I've always liked WD products (I have 6 WD external hard drives for my computer). This WD DVR Expander did not disappoint.
Easy hookup - AFTER I followed WD's instructions, NOT Cablevision's.
I am now able to record HD programs at will without worrying about what else I need to delete off of the DVR.
My only regret is that it isn't a terabyte drive, but I went from no free space on my DVR to 70% free, without breaking a sweat.
If you love your DVR, you'll fall in love all over again when ALL of cable is available at your beck and calling. (OK, not ALL, but a helluva lot more)
