Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA External Hard DriveCustomer Review: Had to get it replaced Summary: 3 Stars
Installed easily, once the screen appeared saying Tivo had detected an external disk drive. However, after using it for a week, the drive made constant and annoying noises even when no activity was happening with the Tivo. I could only surmise that the read head was seeking back and forth for some reason. Not a good sign for a new disk drive. I returned it to Amazon easily via UPS, but no replacement was enroute. I called Amazon and the replacement unit was cancelled for some unknown reason. A new unit was promptly shipped via 2-day UPS. Installed the new unit, and it runs very quiet as it should. Very happy with the huge amount of extra space and quiet drive, but a little annoyed with having to replace the first defective unit.
Customer Review: Simple way to expand recording capacity of DVR Summary: 5 Stars
I have this attached to a Scientific Atlanta DVR. Installation was pretty much plug and play. Plug it in, reboot the DVR, and the DVR recognized the WD drive immediately. Very simple and easy to follow instructions were included for both Scientific Atlanta DVRs and TIVO. I previously had a do-it-yourself setup using a Seagate external SATA drive, which took a few more steps to get working (especially since it wasn't formatted for use with a DVR and there were no instructions of any kind). In contrast, this install was super simple. The drive has been operational for about 3 weeks, and we have had no issues. Drive is quiet does its job well so far. I would recommend this product to others.
Customer Review: Installs and Works Summary: 5 Stars
Read about it 10 days ago, sounded like the perfect product that I could not justify not having at around $200. Quick Western Digital order and delivery. Came home an hour early to install. Out of the box, a few plugs in a particular order, and turn stuff on. The Cablevision box acted funny and I thought that this would be a bust. Re-connected and connected 3 times with no apparant luck.
Went out for dinner .When I got home--2 -3 hours later, the DVR was running. The time already recorded on the Cablevision DVR had gone from 79% to 18%--Perfection.Compatible with Cablevision Scientific American hd digitial recorder. Need it when you want to record in HD.
Customer Review: A fine addition to your home theater! Summary: 5 Stars
First of all I love this product! My Dvr was constantly running short on room. High definition programming takes up a lot of room on your dvr. Mine could only hold around 20 hours of HD content. I have a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HDC DVR and have my service trough Time Warner Cable. Set up took almost no time at all. Simply plug unit in and wait for the DVR to boot. My storage usage was 54% before I hooked up the HDD, after, it went down to 13%. I was considering getting the larger one but now realize that the 500 gig one is just fine. If your constantly running out of room and have a compatible dvr you cant go wrong for the price!
Customer Review: Western Digital My DVR Expander 500 GB eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1S5000VN Summary: 5 Stars
I thought it would be easy to add storage capacity to my Cisco Explorer 8240HDC DVR (Provided by TimeWarner Cable). I tried adding a standard Western Digital MyBook drive but could not get it to work. The Cable company helpdesk told me that it was impossible to add capacity to their DVRs. Then I took a chance on this DVR Expander 500. Worked perfectly. Setup in about 5 minutes. Simply follow the instructions (Connect cable, Plug in power, Start DVR, Watch DVR reboot twice - done). The 8240HDC increased my digital recording capacity from 20hrs HD (90 SD) to roughly 80hrs HD (390 SD). Works perect. No problems (after ~2 months)
