Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1U5000Customer Review: Six months still running perfectly Summary: 5 StarsI bought this back on Feb 22 for only $124 brand new right here (Just went to check the records to make sure.)
I've read many of the one and five star reviews and I have to agree with the five stars. This drive has been running quietly, cooly and fast enough for me. It's almost full now so I came back to see if I can get another one and received sticker shock! $350! OUCH.
If you can find it for between one and two hundred bucks then go for it. I'm looking now at a 1TB cause I filled this thing up too quickly.
Customer Review: Best Hard Drive I've Ever Owned Summary: 5 StarsThis is the best hard drive I've ever had. It's solidly built, runs completely silently, runs cool, and is at a fantastic cost. I've owned dozens of hard drives through the years and this one is hands down my favorite from my favorite company ever. I bought it over a year ago and it still is perfect.
Some things to note however to get the best out of this device.
1) As soon as you get it format it in NTFS using either My Computer>Right Click>Format>NTFS in Windows or if using a Gnome Edition of Linux such as Ubuntu (like myself) open terminal and type 'sudo gpart'. This allows you to store files over 2GB on it such as your DvD ISO backups or back ups of your games.
2) Buy a refurbished or used one. New this product is $300. You can find it all day long on Amazon between $60 and $90 cutting the cost down to almost 1/6 on a good day.
3) Some other customers have complained about this product breaking after prolonged use. This device does have a limited lifespan with write usage. This being said try to put data on it that you want to back up and then set it to 'read only'. This will save you some headaches in the future. It's meant to be a backup drive after all and not one for installing applications on.
Customer Review: Corrupt Drive on Western Digital for the 2nd time! Summary: 1 StarsI own 6 WD My Book External Drives and 2 of the 6 have failed in less than 2 years. If you are storing critical data, find another solution.
Customer Review: Works Fine So Far, BUT....BEWARE! Summary: 3 StarsPurchased item with no problem and it has been working for less than a year perfectly! However, I am a bit annoyed that it is not really 500 GB, but rather 465GB which is a big difference!! If it had been off 500MB to 1GB I wouldn't complain, but 35GB is how much memory some NEW computers come with. And now that I read all these bad reviews, I am very nervous about losing my information.
Customer Review: Worst External Hard drive EVER Summary: 1 StarsI bought one of these a few months ago. I put a ton of data on it and one day, it just stopped working. I didn't drop it, spill water on it, nothing. It just decided not to work. I hate this hard drive. DO NOT BUY IT!
