Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDG1U5000Customer Review: Fails to function Summary: 1 Stars
Western Digital's 500 GB external HD fails to function now. We've had it for about two years. It has been used on XP and Vista machines. As of two weeks ago, the WD 500 is not recognized on any of the machines.
We're read about work-arounds, but they don't work. We've checked WD's website for new drivers or patches. Nothing is available. Worse yet, Western Digital doesn't even reply when they were contacted.
I know we won't buy any Western Digital product in the future. I suggest that you avoid buying this 500GB Ext. HD. Save your money.
In a way, the failed WD Drive was a blessing! It was hurtful to know that they didn't care about their product and their customer's needs. But, that pain lead us to Carbonite.com where we do backups (no size limitations) for $50/year. Yeah... far less than an external HD!
Customer Review: Don't waste your money Summary: 1 Stars
I had 2 MyBook Essentials die on me in less than 2 months. WD said they will replace the drive (for the 3rd time) if I mail it in. Too bad I have over 300gb of data stored on my drive. The computer (or any computer for that matter), fails to recognize the drive. Comes up as Unknow Device. My data is more important to me then getting a new drive from WD. So I went and purchased an external case (Vantec NexStar3) and took out the hard drive from MyBook and placed it into the Vantec case. My computer had no problems recognizing the new external case. From what I've been reading online, lots of people are having problems with MyBooks. WD is refusing to reimburse me for the price of the new case. I will post on every forum/review site that has anything to do with MyBooks and let everyone know the truth about how bad the quality of these overpriced drives really is. If you are thinking of getting a MyBook, DONT!
Customer Review: My Book Essentials 500 MB ....... Western Digital Summary: 5 Stars
I have really enjoyed My Book Essentials from Western Digital. The extra 500 MB's on the External Hard Drive has saved my neck by allowing me to move Pics, Music, Short Movie Clips, Documents etc.... from my PC's Hard Drive to "My Book Essentials 500 MB External Hard Drive."
My PC's memory was just about maxed out and My Book Essentials allowed me to free-up all this Extra Space from my PC's hard Drive. It's just about like having a Brand New computer.
Thank You !!! Western digital. You Rock !!!
PS-
The Shipping/Handling and Delivery was SUPERB. I had the My Book Essentials in about 3-4 days. I was expecting it in 2-3 weeks.
Keep It Up Western Digital;... YOUR Excellent Products, .... Good Service.... and ...... FAST Delivery.....It ROCKS ....YOU ROCK .... Western Digital ......and ....Thanks Again.......Rick
Customer Review: a life saver Summary: 4 Stars
i'm the worst thing that ever happened to any computer because I seriously have computer break down almost about every other month. I've been through 3 computers in the past 3 years and ive lost a lot of information as a result. I bought this as a chrstmas present for myself and backup-ed all my information and 2 days later my computers hard drive crashed and I had to get it replaced. Fortunately I only lost about 2 days worth of information which wasnt anything much at all and I now consider this thing a life saver!
I haven't had any problems with it so far, but then I only use it monthly to back up my stuff. However my dad has one too and he's had it for months with no problems. It's quiet and doesnt get hot.
It also works fine with Vista and the vista back up wizard so thats def a plus!
so far, im satisfied with this product
Customer Review: Great value, ease of use Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for a good, reliable external HDD basically to archive media files. I'd rigged up some home-cooked external drives using old drives and drive enclosures, but the reliability had been spotty. The price was a main factor with the My Book 500 GB; it was actually cheaper than some internal drives of the same size.
Pros: The unit is elegant, relatively quiet and non-intrusive. You can leave it plugged in at all times- it powers up and down with your PC, meaning this is an external HD you can actually use like an internal drive.
Cons: It gets a bit warm, and sometimes seems to spin up for no reason.
Bottom line: A terrific storage option. It looks good, performs well, and is reliable. I have NEVER had a problem with WD, and have owned literally dozens of their drives.
