It's kind of weird how Amazon lumps everything the way it is, but this review is for the Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS. These are great hard drives, they've been out for a while but continue to be one of the best performance for value hard drives available. With two of these running my system in a RAID 0 setup, they're cool, quiet, and fast. Not much more to add, there are plenty of more detailed benchmarks online.

Purchased on a deal for $30ish a piece. Now im seeing why they were so cheap. First unit arrives and it does nothing. No windows device will pick this drive up. Acronis doesn't see it either. I figured maybe I needed to format, but it isn't in computer management either so I cant format it effectively.
Sent the first unit back and Amazon shipped me a new one. Amazon handled the entire process wonderfully. I'll buy from Amazon again, but most definitely not from WD again. Highly disappointing experience from this unit will drive me back to other manufacturers for years to come.
The second drive arrived late last week to the same problems. It isn't recognized by anything whatsoever. So two drives, DOA. Time for a refund!

My old drive crashed with a virus and I didn't have a very current back up:(
Don't make my mistake, keep you're data backup up!
I bought this one to use while I retrieved my old data off old drive.
This disk comes with no sata cord or instructions. But GREAT price.
I plugged it in and let it format the drive over night.
I couldn't believe how cheap it was. It is a little louder than my old drive, but it's 10 TIMES the storage.
I was a little shocked at how bad the failure rate seems to be on hard drives, especialy external drives. Maybe people only complain and don't compliment. I've only had this drive for a month or so. I hope it lasts!

Western Digital WD6400AAKS WD Caviar SE16 SATA Internal Hard Drive, 640 GB, 3 Gb/s, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM Large size (640 GB), fast and ultra quiet at a great price. Transferred my PC files to the new disk in about an hour, and then moved the old disk to an external USB case (under twenty dollars) for a portable backup. As mentioned, this is a bare bones disk (no SATA cable, instruction manual, transfer software) that is perfect as a replacement drive.
** Update 1 January 2009: Disk contiunes to work fine. Very quiet. Great purchase.

I have used WD hard drives in my computers for years (still have a 40GB IDE running the OS). Anyways, i got 2 of these to upgrade the storage space and it was a painless install...I chose these over others because of the 2 platters (too many hard drive crashes over the years).
Oh yeah when i looked on amazon they were sold out. went to another website and paid $10 more got one that was D.O.A. and now hoping their customer service refunds the money. Should have just let amazon back order for me. (the other web site also sent me a blue and green when i wanted two blue, I recycle to save the enviroment).
