Customer Review: 3 Strikes and you're out!
Summary: 1 Stars

I am just about to request a return label for my third drive in less than two months. The first began to get very noisy with heavy vibration after about 30 days. The second drive was extremely loud and upon heavy seek/write would have a metalic grinding sound. The third drive has the same issue. I can hear this drive over my fan and TV!
I think I am done with WD for now. I have ordered a 7200.12 Seagate 1TB as my primary boot drive, so hopefully that will work fine once received. As long as it has good startup speeds and is quiet, I'll be happy - I am sick of opening my computer and cloning hard drives!
As for Amazon's packaging of hard drives - it is horrible. A drive with a small sheet of bubble wrap in a box much larger than the drive is NOT safe packaging. I absolutely love Amazon and spend thousands here, but they really need a packaging lesson on fragile items such as a HD.
Thought the 2TB would be good but no - LOUD! How can they say 32 bels when the Seagate XT is about the same. The XT is silent compared to this. This drive sounds like a 5 year old WD Blue!

Customer Review: Great product, but you guessed it, terrible packaging
Summary: 5 Stars

This drive looked great on paper with all the specs that are listed in the product description. It looked fast, cheap and reliable. So far it has lived up to all expectations. The drive was a snap to install on my Mac and was immediately recognized by the system. All I had to do was format it for the Apple and I was off to the races. The drive seems very responses. In copying the data that I wanted on the drive to it, the drive performed very well. I have not yet had the opportunity to really put it through its paces by using it for video editing but I am very happy with it. My only gripe and it has been said many times in these reviews is that the packaging it comes in is awful. Luckily mine was not DOA but I could easily see why so many reviewers had horror stories. Amazon must think that it is cheaper to replace the broken drives than to fix the packaging. Too bad its such a hassles for the buyers that have the bad luck to get a dead drive. For the price and performance you can't beat this HD. It performs exactly as advertised and if it matches your needs then I would highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Western Digital label on Maxtor Drive - Part II
Summary: 1 Stars

Unfortunately I am having exactly the similar issue that "D. Bachman" is facing (I bought 2 of WD 1TB HDD directly from Amazon to avoid any such issue. Both came factory sealed and when I installed them it has showed 80GB only. And when I test them one by one, it appeared that one is totally not working and the other one is 80GB only instead of 1TB! In addition, it has been written Matrox Corp on the back and WD printed on the front sticker)

I have seen a comment from "Levi Flaman" saying [Don't write up a 1 star comment complaining about factory mix-ups] and I totally disagree with him as this is the 2nd time happened to a customer and this could happened to another customer. Either Amazon.com look into this issue and try to work it out, or WD should be careful with their produced products!

Just for the information, I am one of the biggest buyer of WD products and this is the first time I face such issue which really disappointed me.

I have wrote to Amazon and I am now waiting for their response to replace the items for me.

Customer Review: Buy yourself some storage breathing room
Summary: 5 Stars

Just a great price for a humongous amount of storage. Bought two of them, now instead of wondering where I'm going to squeeze my files among multiple smaller hard disks, I'm wondering how I'm going to make use of all that extra space!

Amazon must have smarted from those reviews about the lousy packaging: my two disks somewhat ridiculously came double-boxed inside a 19x13x7-inch box, with plenty of air cushions inside... a bit overkill. Shipped by FedEx to my home, a bit of a hassle as they tend to attempt signature-required delivery while I'm away at work.

As noted, these are really barebones: disk & dessicant packet inside an anti-static bag are what you get inside the plain cardboard box; no instructions or cables or even box labeling.

Also note unlike WD-boxed hard drives I've bought previously, these are not formatted: after making sure your BIOS recognizes the drive, you'll need to go into Windows Disk Management utility to find it and then format/assign a partition to it. Only then will it appear in Windows Explorer.

Customer Review: Caviar Black -great product
Summary: 5 Stars

The new Caviar Black 1 Terabyte drive is quite incredible. So much storage at a very reasonable price. Installation into my HP a1630n was straight forward, and the SATA connection was very nice. No jumpers to configure or other issues. I will say that formatting took quite a while, but I did opt for a full format, not the quick one. Considering the 1 terabyte size, several hours to format was not unexpected.

I don't notice much heat difference, although I also installed a new video card at the same time, so I would think it is more from that. The drive is also very quiet, I am not sure why others mentioned it could be noisy. I am not hearing any noise issues.

I immediately backed all my systems on the network to this drive and feel much better, knowing I have an image for all 3 other systems. So far I am very satisfied with the WD drive and hope it lives up to the descriptive features of automatic error correction and internal diagnostics. I feel with the features, it was worth the extra money over a WD Green or Blue series.
