Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext HddCustomer Review: Crashed my computer Summary: 1 Stars
Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB/To 1 USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive
Within 3 days of backing up my computer, this item destroyed completely all my programs that had been loaded after the computer was bought, such as my XP Professional office program and my Anti Virus program. I turned the computer off and when I turned it on everything was gone, including the installation of the WD software. I was able to retored the basics of my computer using my own computer's F11 recovery button. When I re-installed WD and tried to retrieve what was lost and theoretically backed up, it retrieved no more than my own computer was able to do. My computer also no longer ran smoothly, causing many error messages and freezing views that could only be fixed by re-booting. With the second level of technical support, I was able to have a retrieved documents folder set up so I could save all my work in Word, Excel, and Power Point over many years. I am afraid I will still have to take the computer to a computer repair shop to repair the damage at much cost. I am still awaiting a call back from the manager. This product caused huge damage to my computer and to me financially.
Customer Review: You only get 30 day free trial on the backup software Summary: 1 Stars
here is what I sent Amazon customer service:
I am writing about this Western Digital 1TB back up drive, and especially the Memeo autosync and autobackup software that was preloaded on it upon receipt. My computer got noticeably slower once installing this drive, and this is software that I have to buy after 30 days. I just checked the online descriptions again, even the detailed ones, and there is no mention of software at all, much less that you have to buy it after a 30 day free trial.
You cannot stop this software once it loaded on your PC, short of removing from the computer totally. My desktop will not come up at all on either mine or my wife's account after 15 days of it being installed. I finally decided to remove this software from my PC through Control Panel, and now my computer is working much better under her userid, have not checked mine yet. At least Internet Explorer will come up when launched.
Unless you can provide alternate backup software, I want to put this HDD back in its original box and return it for a refund. It has been a big waste of my time, and I am very disappointed in Amazon's deceptive listing of its software.
Customer Review: Gets the job done so far........ Summary: 4 Stars
As soon as I got this drive, I reformatted to NTFS (to allow files larger than 4gb as other reviews have mentioned). **Use the Quick format function or it will take forever**
After formating was done (about 1 minute) I transfered 100 GB (ya, giga with a G) to the hard drive from my computer. This transfer took a little more than an hour and a half, but went through flawlessly without crashing or stalling.
1 TB of space is a lot. To fill this up you have to have a lot of video or tons of files. The drive itself looks good. It is heavier than it looks, but it stands well vertically. It does not get too hot (just make sure you do not cover the air vents on the top, back or bottom -- make sure you place it on a hard surface so it can get air through the bottom part).
CONS: Not a terribly big deal for me, but I should mention that the cords that come with the drive are short. The power cord is short (about 5 or 6 feet) and the USB cable is only about 3 or 4 feet). This can be a problem if using a laptop or desk set-up that requires longer cords. But you can just get extension cords if it comes down to that.
Customer Review: Might As Well Delete All Your Files Now Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased two of these in two different places and both with a week apart from each other gave me the dreaded error -36 constantly! Then the drives refused to mount at all, making the icons on my desktop disappear and reappear continuously until I pulled the power cord out.
Ok, the specs. I used these on four different Macs, all but one on OS 10.6.1. One, a Macbook Pro, a G5 Tower, a 24"iMac and G4 tower, which is running 10.4. I was only transferring quicktime mpv and mp4 files from one to another.
I contacted WD support and they requested all kinds of technical information from my computers when I get the errors before they could evaluated the problem. I did so and after some back and forth I realized that all my responses were from an automated system. At one point I got an email telling me to return the drives for replacement at my own cost. Basically I lost about $600+ in movie files that I will not get back without going through the time and processing power to convert the files all over again. I would never purchase a product from this company again.
That's my experience.
Customer Review: Good product, not kid-proof Summary: 3 Stars
I'm buying my second 1TB WD MyBook Essential, the first one having died after seven months. I'll give it three stars. Given a home environment with three over-active school-age kids swarming the computer like flies, it probably deserves an extra star for lasting this long. Be warned, these things aren't combat-ready.
But I'll demote WD several stars for telling me the warranty expired just three days before the drive expired. Apparently they count one year from the time of manufacture by default, not sale. When I (finally) found an old e-mail to document the date of the on-line purchase (not Amazon), I e-mailed it to their customer support for a warranty adjustment and never heard back from them. Be warned again.
Other than that the product seems solid enough for "normal" usage, and the transfer speed through the USB port is perfectly adaquate for day-to-day backups (the reason I have it.) For 1TB you can't beat the convenience and price. But if you plan to run major applications directly off it, you will want one of the more expensive MyBook models with the SATA interface.
