Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext HddCustomer Review: Misleading advertising concerning WD My Book Ess ED 1 Summary: 3 Stars
As far as I know, the basic product is fine and maybe rates 4 or 5 stars, but I reduced the rating because the software that comes on this WD My Book Ess Ed 1 TB USB 2.0 requires that I buy it to use it after 30 days. The write up in Amazon implied that it came with software with no mention that it was not included in the price I paid. Think is said something like comes ready to use. I called WD and they said that I could use it without the software 'drag and drop', which is very inconvenient for a backup HD and is not what most of us would consider 'ready to use' for a backup HD. (I'm on the road and cannot remember the s/w company) Either on the WD or s/w co. website, after I had installed the HD, I found numerous complaints stating the above. Tried to call the s/w co.about this but could get to no ph # for them. Also wanted to ask if I need the sync program, which is a second s/w program that the WD HD comes with. No way to call them for questions on a new product that they want to sell me is deliberately poor customer service.
Rather than search for another program from the net to use, I will probably pay the $30 for their s/w program, but Amazon should know about this, as you are at least an unwitting party to this false advertising.
If you have a phone number for the s/w company that works, please let me know.
Thanks
Dave Finney
Customer Review: Did not even bother to plug it in Summary: 1 Stars
First, let me say that I did not buy this product at Amazon, but I am trying to put the word out wherever you can buy one of these. I did not even plug it in and I can tell you that it is not worth the money - just read the "safety instructions" once and you will understand the company cannot possibly be serious about their product or their business as there are at least thirteen mistakes just on the one page. But do not stop there - I purchased a brand new, shrink wrapped product from a store only to get it home to find an already chewed, discarded piece of gum in the box that contains the cords.
I am unsure which of these two things disgusted me more. Whether the product came from the factory with the additional flavor, or if it was purchased, opened, resealed, returned, and re-sold I cannot say, but regardless of the chewing gum, I refuse to plug a product into my computer if the company cannot even be bothered to proofread one page of safety intructions prior to printing however many thousands of copies went into their products. I do not ask for perfection in everything, but a little bit of pride in workmanship goes an awfully long way in helping me trust a company that I am about to connect to a $1,200 computer and put all of my life's data onto.
Boo Western Digital is about all I can say.
Customer Review: Major weaknesses: Small buffer & Weak warranty Summary: 3 Stars
After several months looking for an affordable external drive to store my backups, photos, digital music and videos with enough capacity, WD was going to be my first choice, so I started reading other people's reviews and see what their experience was.
Unfortunately, in 25-30% of the cases people had problems with their drives after several months. Yeah, most of them got a refund or a replacement, but their major complaint was all the data they lost. Dude, I have lots and lots of data, like documents and pictures I will never recover if I lost them.
After reading several reviews and the full details, I found out that the disk comes with ONLY 16MB of buffer (same they use for 500GB disks) and a USB 2.0 connection @480mbps will saturate that buffer quickly. What does this mean? The disk will have to rotate more and the heads will need to move more to read and write your data, therefore, your drive's lifetime will be shorter.
How clever, Western Digital only gives you 1 year of warranty.
So I decided for the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive. It costs a few bucks less, comes with not 16 but 32MB buffer, and a 5 YEAR WARRANTY.
Customer Review: Worked great till one 1 of my 2 died within 1.5 years Summary: 2 Stars
I had two of these, just in case one goes bad. I back up on both of them and store one at work (in case of house fire, storm, etc) in a locked file cabinet and the other at home. I bought them both in late 2008. Well, after about 1.5 years one of them went bad. When plugged into multiple computers the computers do not recognize it. I will reluctantly buy another WD because it is supposed to be good quality. Seagate does not have a good reputation. And another off brand one died on me about 2 years ago and it was under a year old. Always, always back up in more then one place, no matter where you back up. All the other attributes of this hard drive are pretty insignificant if it dies on you. When it does work, it is very nice. I don't use the enclosed software; just manage my items like any flash drive/SD card. It took probably 8 hours to initially load 200 GB of photos, but once loaded the speed is perfect.
Customer Review: Works fine.. Summary: 4 Stars
I've read the reviews given for this product and this review is based on my own experience with it so far.
I bought this external hard drive April 10, 2009, because my other 400GB WD hard drive died on me, but I blame myself for that because I didn't take care of it very well.
Anyway, 2 months into its usage it is fine. The data transfer rate isn't amazing, but I'm using it mainly for file storage and I transfer files to it bit by bit, so that has never been a problem for me. The only downside to it, comparing it to the other drive I had, was the lack of an "on/off" button, so basically if I safely remove the drive, I have to unplug it, then plug it back in for it to start up again.
Aside from that minor down side, in my 2-months experience with it so far, it has done well in terms of holding my data, hasn't crashed on me once, and works fine so far. I don't know about any issues that might arise in the long-term but so far everything is fine.
One thing to note though is that I had some problems with it at first, whenever I plugged it in my computer would freeze. Eventually i found out that my computer had several viruses that were messing up the process. I formatted my computer, and the hard disk works absolutely fine.
