Customer Review: For all you no techinical people
Summary: 4 Stars

This My Book is just a fantastic piece of equipment. Being somewhat of a novice,i had to find out what a dang Terra bite was and found out I would have more room to store great stuff than you can imagine. At first i was
sceptical."Will it interfere with my computer? Is it hard to hook up?
To answer this question to both questions i say "no way!" It is very easy,
you have a power supply and it hooks up into your USB port,(you know those
ports that look like little slots on your computer. You should have at least 4 of them!) Now the only draw back that the sales man told me is the if you have an older computer,it works ok ,but not that well. But if your like me discovering torrent files and huge flac files or you have
100's of downloads of music or video ,this is worth every penny. Ever crash your computer? You can copy everything in your computer like program files. This will be so amazing. I just wanted to see what it could do for me,saying "oh I will just spend about an hour doing this,I was there well
into the night!" Dont be afraid of this wonderful invention. The more you can put in the book, the better your computer will run because it does not have to go through all those programs . So clean up and it will be wonderful! Like I said I have been in computers many many years, but never have I come across a true friend to your computer! Dont be afraid to buy it,it fast and simple. Those guys above me are telling you "computer jargon", I am here to tell that this IS USER FRIENDLY!
Just plug it in! Great thing! Just wonderful!

Customer Review: PS3 & X360 both can read this drive easy as just plug and play
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Maxtor 500gb and Seagate 500gb and both are awesome, but PS3 and X360 can't read them at all which is stupid, I want to watch movies I have download on my HDTV and like I said, PS3 and X360 doesn't even read both of them until I bought this WD hard drive.

I know that if I format the Seagate and Maxtor to FAT32, my PS3 and X360 could read them but I only have a Sony Vaio laptop and it doesn't let me format them to FAT32. Both of them stuck at default NTFS which was unreadable on Ps3 and X360.

The best thing about this WD hard drive was that its way more stronger than the Maxtor & Seagate both. I have drop it twice at 3 feet height from a table and hit the carpet and still work fine. My bro has knock it down from the 3 feet table three times already and it bang hard on my caret and it still work fine. All the data still work fine.
So I order a 500gb WD as well.
Both work fine and I sold both Maxtor & Seagate, they aren't that good.
I won't said the WD is better than the Seagate and Maxtor, but i like the WD better because it was FAT32 which like I said above, my PS3 and X360 can read it easily and just plug and play which I could watch my movies and videos I download from the net on my HDTV.

Any hard drive is okay, but if you want instant FAT32, this WD is the best t pick up.

The only bad thing about this WD was that the transfer rate was too slow.
20 mins for 5gb is not good.
Anyway, the WD was awesome.
I just think the 500gb transfer faster than the 1TB.

Customer Review: Backup Software NOT Included
Summary: 2 Stars

It's my fault, I admit as much, but I'm still annoyed and feeling cheated. My primary reason for purchasing this drive was for automatic backup. I had been comparing several brands on multiple websites, finally settling on the WD drive. I read several reviews on varying WD external drives before selecting this drive as it had the basics I needed: USB, 1 TB of storage, and (I mistakenly assumed) automatic backup software. I made the purchase from Amazon.

However, as I've now discovered, the WD Essential My Book drive lacks any backup software beyond a 30-day trial (the same trial available from[...]). The actual software costs an additional $30+ from Memeo and other backup companies. Most all other WD My Books contain the full, retail versions of the software.

Why WD left it out of the Essential is a mystery to me, and I think this probably annoys me as much as anything. Like I said, I made the mistake of not noticing the difference between this drive and the other editions, but it still feels like sleezy business practices to me; as if including a thirty dollar piece of software with their product would have ruined the company.

The backup software is nothing special, but was my number one reason for purchasing this drive. If you're in the market for a simple, easy and automated backup solution, this is NOT the product for you.

And yes, I'm rating the drive out of pure anger. It's probably a five-star drive, but I'm too annoyed with WD to be fair at this point.

Customer Review: Good price. Works well.
Summary: 5 Stars

This hard drive is quiet, small, nice looking, a great price for 1 TB, and so far (just approaching three weeks now) is working flawlessly. But if you are using this hard drive with an Apple Macintosh computer, and you want this hard drive to be able to take advantage of the significant advantages offered by the Mac, before you put this drive to use, make sure that you re-format it (it takes less than a minute) as described by at least one other amazon.com reviewer on these pages. The way you re-format this for the Mac while extremely easy, is not obvious or in just the usual way, and you probably need to look up that advice in these reviews before you waste your time with the more typical Mac formatting processes, which does not work. It's a shame that the instructions don't make clear that 1) This hard drive will work with a Mac with the formatting that comes with the hard drive, but that 2) It is easy and to your advantage to first re-format the drive if you plan to use it with your Mac. Needless to say, the seller or manufacturer should also add the simple but atypical re-formatting instructions for the Mac, as I've heard that without knowing exactly how to reformat this hard drive for the Mac, some purchasers have been frustrated trying to re-format it for the Mac in the conventional way, and therefore have unnecessarily returned the drive to the seller as either not being "friendly" with their Mac or as not being Mac formatable (if there is such a word) and therefore not compatible with their Mac.

Customer Review: Great drive ... could use a performance boost
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very nice unit. Form factor is excellent and was a load-and-go into the USB 2.0 port on my Dell C521 running Vista on 2G RAM. More stable than the MAXTOR 500G, which I've replaced twice. I hate external disks (i.e. MAXTOR) that spin up like a jet engine and sound like a grinding washing machine. You'd never know the WD was working if it was not for the flashing blue light. Nice and quiet.

Without forgetting that this is a backup device the performance was less than stellar. Some rough bulk copy performance metrics:
- Between a 2.0 USB MAXTOR 500G and a 2.0 USB WD 1T I copied 336G of 365 MP4 video files. It took almost 9 hours with a max transfer rate of 12.5MB/sec.
- Between Dell C521 internal SCSI 250G and 2.0 USB WD 1T I copied a 70G iTunes repository of music with a max transfer rate of 5.6MB/sec. Every time I started another copy, up to 5 simultaneous copies (11,000 jpg's, 2,000 docs, etc.), performace halved until it dropped to a low of 222 KB/Sec for 4 simultaneous copies. As each copy was finished the system did not recover its resources back to the baseline of 5.6KB/sec ... very disappointing.

For whatever it is worth from a performance perspective I kept the shipped FAT32 file structure and had McAfee running.

But it is dependability and not necessarily performance that is the main criteria of a backup device. The cost per GB storage makes the WD a very attractive solution ... let's see if it is still up and running in six months.
