Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext Hdd

Customer Review: GREAT DURABlE HARDDRVIE
Summary: 5 Stars

This was my first external hard drive and having heard good thing about Western Digital I decided to go with their My Book 1 TB Hard Drive. At the time 1TB was considered huge and was one of the largest out there. I love this hard drive, absolutely love it. I haven't had any problems with it though the power cord has a short but that's my fault. I didn't take case of this drive as best I should. On that not I've also dropped it once or twice and to my surprise it was completely fine!...except I kinda separated the plastic casing on one of those drops but since it's happened I still continued to use it as my main drive for months later with no side effects. I was very happy with this purchase, the one problem I did have with it was that the casing was plastic and not metal. All I can say is my hard drive has been to hell and back and it's survived.

Customer Review: Perfect for those who want to keep things simple.

I have owned my WD for nearly a year now. I am not the greatest with computers, but this external is extremely easy. I own a dell and the moment I plugged it in my computer it opened up the page to set up registration and I was ready to go within 2 minutes. I easily copied all my documents into external and set up all my itunes songs/videos to be on my external which opened up a lot of memory in my computer. I also set my SLR camera to download all new photos directly into a file in my WD so I don't waste space on my computer with RAW images. Currently my external is connected to my computer all the time, so it shuts off/on along with my computer. Fingerprints do stick to the sides, but it seems to not catch any dust at all (unlike my giant tower that I dust twice a week that sits right next to it).

Great Product.

Customer Review: Price does not include software!
Summary: 1 Stars

This product comes with "free trial software" that expires after a month. For $29.95 more you can buy some "upgraded" software that allows you to transfer data "up to three times faster," and presumably the software in your new product will expire without the upgraded replacement. So, the purchase price of this product is misleading. If you buy it, you are purchasing hardware without software. (Or, more accurately, software that will shortly expire) - this is like buying a new car without an engine. For about 25% more money they will supply the engine. Deceptive and misleading. Shame on Amazon for not revealing this to potential buyers.Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive WDH1U10000N

Customer Review: Pure junk
Summary: 1 Stars

Looks nice, doesn't run warm.

Lasted 45 days before it started spewing bad sectors. Just outside of Amazon's 30 day return policy.

Now I have to fight through Western Digital support to get a replacement. I would rather have my money back so that I can buy another brand. I hate to support garbage. I normally never buy from Western Digital, but I had hoped that they had changed. Not. I knew better.

I really do have other things to do with my life.

I had a Seagate ST305004FDA1E1-RK FreeAgent Desktop 500 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive fail on me within 2 weeks of purchase. Some whiz-bang of an engineer decided that a hard drive didn't need any ventilation. It's bad when a brand new drive runs too hot to touch, then grinds to a halt, literally.

Customer Review: bad data transfer
Summary: 1 Stars

i bought this to consolidate several smaller drives i have lying about onto one master backup, and i had serious trouble with the drive. transferring large folders or files would cause it to have "unknown errors" (of course, after nearly an hour of sitting there) every time, so i was reduced to moving things one at a time. then, a large file that couldn't be broken up jammed the thing and i gave up.
thinking that somehow it could be my computer, i brought the drive in to my office, but experienced the same issues there. for the record, the same files were easily transferred to and from 2 other drives i had--simply not this one.

it's lovely to look at, and small, but unfortunately ill-designed for what i would imagine to be it's primary purpose--moving large amounts of data for backup!
