Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext Hdd

Customer Review: Sleek and quiet
Summary: 5 Stars

My expectations were beyond met when I plugged this in. It amazes me that a 1 TB external hard drive can be so quiet. I had returned a 1 TB older version of Western Digital's external hard drive because it sounded like a jet engine. Western Digital clearly fixed that problem with this model.

The design is sleek and stylish, it is perfectly silent, and it transfers quickly with a 2.0 USB port. I'm not so technically knowledgeable that I can provide speed test, but it has transferred a couple gigabytes within a minute.

I highly recommend this product.

UPDATE: I've had the product for 7 months now and I still stand by my original review. It has never given me any problems or crashed.

UPDATE: I've now had this product (which is no longer manufactured) for over 3 years and it still performs exactly the way it did when I first bought it. I love products that stand the test of time.

Customer Review: Only lasted a few weeks!
Summary: 1 Stars

My 1TB my book essential only worked for a few weeks since purchase. When I contacted customer support, they did say that it would be replaced free of charge, but here's the problem...I just placed data on that drive that is now unretreivable. Those at WD said that I needed to use one of their data recovery services to get the data off. I called the 1st 3 on the list and their recovery prices were through the roof. I called a local data recovery place that was 1/4 the estimated cost of the other places. In calling back WD they said that if I did not use one of their "preferred" data recovery companies that I would void the warranty and they would not replace the unit. What a scam! The unit's already broken and should be eligible for replacement. It's bad enough they are not covering the cost to retrieve my data, but now they're trying to force me to use a company I do not want to use. Do I ever regret this purchase...

Customer Review: Holds a lot of TV
Summary: 5 Stars

I have ripped 603 gb of TV shows and movies to store on this drive so far. Before I got this drive, it would take about 26-35 minutes to copy one TV show disk to my laptop's hard drive. It takes about 28-39 minutes to copy them to this drive. I have a little netbook without an internal CD/DVD drive, so I have an external drive for that. I have the CD/DVD drive and the Western Digital drive plugged into a powered USB 2.0 hub.

The point is, this runs fast. It only takes a couple of minutes longer per DVD to run through the hub and into the WD drive instead of straight into my laptop.

I have watched some of the movies from the drive. (The point was to store DVDs I own on the external drive, then copy a few of them to my internal drive when I go on vacation.) I haven't noticed any drop in speed or any problems.

This does what it's supposed to do and I really like it.

Customer Review: Great hard drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this hard drive. It is very simple to use, just plug in to the wall and to your computer and it is good to go. I have used it for backup and it works beautifully. Very fast and massive.

I have two complaints:
1. The glossy exterior is very easily scratched and fingerprinted. I scratched it within about an hour just because I laid it down on the desk and then slid it on its side. I would personally prefer a matt finish that doesn't show fingerprints as easily and stays beautiful for longer.
2. When I bought this item, it was sold to me by Target. I saw it at a Target store in my area the day after I ordered it for the same price, with a $10 gift card included. I could have saved the shipping and handling, got myself a gift card and had the thing that day if I had known. So that may be something to consider if you want to buy from Target through amazon.

Customer Review: Not Worth It
Summary: 1 Stars

Every WD hard drive I have purchased in the past has performed well and lasted a long time. I haven't had this drive a year, and I have already had to replace the case twice. I was using this drive at work when the PC would not recognize it. I took it home and still nothing. It wasn't until I went online and read a bunch of reviews and articles on troubleshooting the drive that I realized the case is crap. I swapped the case for another since it was too late to take it back and WD would take forever to send it back if I sent it to them. The last case worked for maybe 6 months before it gave out. Not only does the case not work but neither does the drive. At the same time as my My Book purchase, I purchased a Hitachi 1 TB OEM 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive for 69.99 and case for 7.99, and it is still going strong. Sometimes you just can't go by a name.
