Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext Hdd

Customer Review: Painfully slow
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this to use between both a Mac and a PC mainly for music and movies. The space was about the only thing I like about it. When I first plugged it in it wouldn't mount in OS X. As soon as I popped open Disk Utility, it mounted. This seemed like an unnecessary hassle. I tried reformatting, sometimes leaving it running overnight but Disk Utility would just hang. I tried running first aid and after a very long wait it would tell me things were fixed. When I went to shut down or restart after running first aid, OS would crash. It's been a very stable system otherwise and this only comes up when using this drive. Finally, transfer was unbelievably slow. Hooked up to a hub or straight to the Mac using any of several good USB cables I never got more than 15-20 Mbps, less than half the USB 2.0 max. I took it back and exchanged it for another one which behaved the exact same way. I also have a 500GB WD Essential that has never had any of these issues.

Customer Review: My Book 1TB
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great hard drive. It's smaller than I expected it to be (about the same size as my 500 GB), and it's very quiet. These are both Western Digital Essential Edition drives. They both allow a USB 2.0 connection. They were both easy to install and to convert to the NTFS format. However, since I am very careful, I had the tech support guy on the phone just in case. The only difference between the two drives is that this newer one--the 1TB--does not have an on/off switch in the front. My XP OS allows me to 'safely remove hardware' with a click of the mouse button for both drives when I don't need them on. To turn the smaller drive back on, I just switch it on. For my new 1TB drive I would need to unplug the power cord from the back of the device and then plug it back in to restart it--a minor inconvenience--but perhaps safer. Otherwise, it is great storage and takes up little space on my desk. It's sleek and quiet. It's really a beauty.

Customer Review: At least for Mac 10.6, a real hassle
Summary: 1 Stars

The drive itself I am sure is fine, but the controller for it is terrible. At least on Mac OS 10.6, getting the drive to be recognized entails this strange ritual of unplugging it for a few minutes, then re-powering & reconnecting it. A few times after staying connected to the same machine, the drive would remain mounted, but no subfolders were readable. Again, un-power it, wait a few minutes, then re-power it. I should note that I don't have problems with any other external drives. Using it for Time Machine back-ups is awkward, at best. I ended up buying a different external enclosure, cracking open the My Book, install the drive in the new enclosure, and everything is fine. There is something about the controller in the My Book case that makes it unreliable. I talked to another person who had to use the same solution in order to keep the drive (and data on it). The drive itself is fine, the enclosure it's in: not worth the hassle.

Customer Review: Waste of money
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased the 1TB hard drive transfered over 600GB of info to it thinking that its knew and that it will be like my older hard drive and last at least 4 to 5 years. Well three months after i purchased this hard drive i was watching a movie and it just froze and and started clicking and thats all she wrote. I called WD and they said yes we would be happy to replace it, and i asked (what about my information, movies, pictures, etc.) They told me that they do not cover recovery in their waranty. And i would have to go to one of their recommended companies to recover my info still get a new hard drive. I called one of these companies, they want from 900 dollars to 3,000 dollars to recover, my info, if they could recover it. Even the recovery company said that they are cheap hard drives and they get calls all the time for WD external hard drives. I just would like to warn people not to buy this hard drive, the price is cheap for a reason.

Customer Review: Never worked for my Mac
Summary: 3 Stars

I have an older G4 Powerbook, with the latest version of OS X installed and all necessary system requirements for this "Western Digital My Book Essential 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive," but ultimately I was never able to get it to work.

I spent a lot of time on the phone with Western Digital's tech support (which was a pain in itself, as they are only available during regular east coast business hours, and I am over on the west coast in Seattle...) as well as quite a few email contacts. After the drive failed to partition and format to my Mac, the tech support representative had me exchange the drive for a new one, which also was unable to be partitioned to my Mac. Brand new drive but with identical issues.

Unfortunately, tech support said it was a mystery as to why the drive wouldn't work with my Mac, and suggested that I return it altogether and try a different product. So I did.
