Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext HddCustomer Review: Worked for 1 day...ONLY!!! Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this item on a Saturday morning and installation was a breeze although, my computer began running EXTREMELY slow. That evening "WD My Book" began to make a faint noise. When I turned it on Sunday afternoon, it was not recognized by the computer. I restarted the computer 3 times without result, unplugged the power and USB cords while the computer was off (as directed by support) then, started the computer and replaced the cords. The Western Digital My Book was completely DEAD! Crashed! I have tried changing power cords...Nothing! I don't know whether it is the product or "the luck of the draw" but this product has proven to be of no value. All of my information, lucky it wasn't much, is irretrievable. Lesson: If you purchase this product, BACK-UP YOUR FILES FIRST on something reliable! Two stars are for the installation process which is the only good feature. Oh yeah, there is only a 90 day guarantee. Seagate FreeAgent Desk Drive (1 TB) has a 5 year standard limited warranty.
Customer Review: DON"T BUY THIS or ANY WD Product Summary: 1 Stars
Don't buy this drive and risk your data!
I bought one of the 1TB drives and thought I would move my cherished videos and all my music collection there since it had lots of space. BIG MISTAKE. After using it for about a monnth, the drive now DOES NOT spin up and doesn't show on my computer. I have tried other computers and same results. I called Western Digital customer support and they told me that I could send the drive to a data recovery service... They original told me that this service would be covered by the warranty. but when calling the data recovery service they tell me the cost to diagnose would be covered but it will cost $700 - $1500 to recover the data. I called back Western Digital and they now claim they didn't tell me that.
BOTTOM LINE - if you want to risk your data buy one of these ... IF you don't.. try to find a more reliable HD drive manufacturer .. and get 2 or 3 of them and make sure you have backups of all your files..
Good luck.
Customer Review: As Advertised Summary: 5 Stars
Everything is as advertised. Plug it in and it works. No hassle. Case is a little larger than some. For me this is a plus because I can set it upright without a stand. This drive is rock solid stable sitting upright. Most bases rarely work well and are usually at least 3X the width of the drive. I always seem to misplace the base as I move the drive from one place to another and then I am stuck using the drive in the horizontal format. Never a concern with this drive. In the uprighr format, it takes up very little desk space. Actually, less space than other "slimmer" drives I own when used with their required base. Makes no noise at all. Nothing complicated about this device. It just does it's job as advertised by the manufacturer and Amazon. I have used numerous external hard drives, including firewire devices, and this one is faster than any drive I have ever used. Will definetly purchase same or similar product from WD if I ever need another external hard drive.
Customer Review: Good to have a backup plan Summary: 4 Stars
This is a decent backup drive to save your data on. The WD Anywhere Backup software lets you set up what files and folders you want backed up on a regular basis. You can also use it with Windows One Care. There should be a code in the directions where you can register WD Anywhere Backup for free.
Windows users will want to convert the FAT drive to NTFS. This may take a while, but it is necessary in order to save anything over 4 gig.
The initial backup takes a while, it is a bit slow. I also had one instance with the WD Anywhere Backup software where it lost my backup plan. My files where still on the MyBook, but the plan was no longer recognized for real time backup and I had to make a new backup plan.
Overall it's a good deal. Lots of space for the price and it is very quiet. You can add additional items on this drive to free up space on your computer. They can be added in a folder that is not part of your regular backup plan.
Customer Review: Garrrrrrrrbage Summary: 1 Stars
Do not buy this drive.
Half the time, the hard drive itself won't mount.
But, it'll mount a fake CD rom drive everytime, with worthless software to "backup" your computer to the hard drive.
But then like I said, half the time, you can't see the hard drive as a drive in "My Computer" itself.
You have to reboot. Uhh...srsly? Yeah. Pretty lame.
I had to dig through my nasty garbage can to find the receipt, and let me tell you...it was worth it. I do NOT want to be stuck with this lame lame lame drive.
DO NOT BUY!
Also, in under 2 weeks of use, a lot of data somehow became inaccessible. I could see the folder name, but then when I tried to open it, Windoze would say something like "Uh, there is no data in here, this might refer to a network location." I can't get the exact error msg, cuz this thing is packed and I do not want to have it around no more.
