Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital - 1Tb 7200 Rpm 16Mb Ext HddCustomer Review: Piece of junk Summary: 1 Stars
I've bought several "My Book" USB drives in the past and they have been generally good. This time Western Digital has lost me as a customer for good. I just got this new 1TB Essential model and I can't say if it will be good or not in the long run, it runs fine after 2 days, but one thing I can say is that it has a much flimsier, cheap, thin, light enclosure than the earlier models. If you press on the back panel in bends very easily. And that's not the worst of it. The thing that I cannot stomach is why oh why did they change the USB jack on the device to the smaller version?!? I can't tell you how many USB devices are in the landfill because of the tiny jacks instead of the larger jacks found on most USB printers. If this is not a conspiracy to increase sales of equipment I don't know what is. The tiny USB jacks are so easily prone to damage, including their cables, that it can only be construed as a consipracy. Once the tiny contacts become bent or worse, that's it. Expect to see more manufacturers implement them, because that's just the way they are.
Customer Review: Worst mistake for 2009! Summary: 1 Stars
I thought that Western Digital was a reliable solid product, but I was wrong. I bought this thing 2 months ago. The hard drive had been sitting up as it's "stylishly designed" to do. It was accidentally tipped on its side and now it does not work. All of my precious stored data is now lost. Thanks for allowing me to foolishly think that this was a good product. Let me remind you that I did not throw or drop the hard drive, all it did was get tipped on its side and now years of data, photos, music, etc no longer exists. $150 paper weight? Loosing family photos, thousands of songs, and irreplaceable data? Getting screwed by lousy testing and quality control? Priceless! Thanks Western Digital.
Take note Western Digital....Stop trying to turn a simple reliable product into a styish time bomb. Design it so that it has a low profile that won't be prone to tipping over when directly looking at it. It's my recommendation that you change the name from `My Book' to `Hot Garbage'.
WARNING: DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!!!!
Customer Review: Great product Summary: 5 Stars
I have purchased at least 10 My Book Essentials over the past few years including several of these 1TB. They are very durable (no problems yet!) and are pretty simple to use. These drives are huge in capacity and cheap and reliable - so much so that I literally mirror every MyBook I by onto a second MyBook to protect against fire, theft or drive failure (I keep the backup offsite). Also they are handsome looking drives and when you have 2 or more lined up in a row on a shelf, they do look very nice and neat, and run very quietly.
My only complaint is that they come preformated as FAT32 instead of NTFS which limits the size of any one file on the drive to 4GB, but increases the compatibility across various operating systems. If you are storing photos or music on it, no biggie since those files are really tiny by comparison... FAT32 probably wont cause you any problems. But if you are storing family videos, databases or other large data files, you might consider setting it up as NTFS from the start.
Customer Review: This Hard Drive did not work with Dell XPS 1330 with Vista Summary: 1 Stars
It initially connected fine and I backed up my data. After powering down the DELL XPS M1330 laptop powering back up it would not show up as a drive even though after checking in hardware manager it showed up under usb devices. After calling Western Digital and Dell and spending hours with tech support we were unable to get the hard drive working with Vista. I sent it back for a refund. I also experienced issues with Vista using a 1TB Seagate drive that I purchased prior to the Western Digital. It would not recognize the drive after reboot unless I power cycled the Seagate drive. I returned that drive prior to purchasing the Western Digital. I own a 160 GB external that I made by removing the internal 160 GB drive from an old computer and buying a case for. It works every time with 0 issues. The problem is the drive has been making noises and will die soon which is why I am trying to replace my drive. If anyone can recommend a good external 1 TB drive that actually works consistently with Vista, please do.
Customer Review: Soild Product Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the WD External Hard Drive to back up my important financial and data files at my place of employment. My OS is Windows XP and I am using the backup and restore feature that comes with McAfee Total Protection 2009 3-User. Been using it for over a year now and I have not had any issues. Once a week I verify what files are in the drive and delete old backups. I also make sure to use Dust-off Professional Canned Air on a regular basis because "dust bunnies" like to gather in the unit's vents since I have it sitting next to my PC tower on the carpet. As many have mentioned before, the software is useless and found it easier to use another program for backups. I actually deleted all the folders the unit originally comes with since they were just taking up space. Solid product for an excellent price.
