Customer Review: Consumer Report
Summary: 4 Stars

Amazon is better than consumer reports. I purchased this drive from BestBuy before I read the amazon reviews. I am a geek and wanted a drive to backup family member computers after virus cleanup. This device will do the job but I had to figure out how. I first loaded the smartware backup software and gave it a password for 128 bit encryption. Then I backed up my 200gb hard drive. After 30 hours I canceled the backup. The slow speed was because of the encryption. The backup software doesn't backup the Operating system so it wasn't as good as my other backup software (including microsoft's). Also, the smartware continiously backup changed files which left my hefty machine crawling. I found you could only use their backup software if encryption was turned on. I searched "remove" and found an option to remove the backup data (to free the disk). I turned the encryption off and formated the hard drive to NTFS. Then I uninstalled Smartware. Now I can use the drive as I intended. I have 3 complaints, 1. unpluging the drive gives you a blue screen of death so you have to dismount it first. 2. There is no power switch. 3. It leaves a CD partition for installing the smartware software. I gave it the 4 rating even with these problems because the price was right.

Customer Review: DO NOT Buy this drive!
Summary: 1 Stars

I wish to GOD I would have read more reviews and product guides before buying - I am a mobile DJ that just took over a karaoke business. I figured -WHY NOT- get a TB drive to have everything I dj off of plus karaoke on one drive.
HUGE MISTAKE!

First off for DJ's - this is slow and more so when using the VirtualDJ program. Between songs a 15-30second lag time. That can be forgiven though as the drive itself is massive.

Here is my own dilemma. I went to pick the drive up and the entire casing fell apart and the hard drive itself fell out! I had a friend who took it and put it in his own computer as a secondary drive to retrieve files. He rendered the whole thing useless and broken. Perhaps I got a defective one but that doesnt help me now.

I have DJ'ed with this drive a mere 3 times and used it maybe 10 times for transfers so its brand new! It is going back to the store for me to find something better which I will be reading reviews for the rest of the night.

As for now - Thank GOD I had all the DJ music backed up on my wife's laptop and a 160gig seagate. I have lost the karaoke job at the bar for now all because of a very faulty product!

Buy and use only at your own risk!

Customer Review: Dead as in kicked the bucket, bereft of life, expired
Summary: 1 Stars

The thing still spins, but the files are corrupt, the tests are not passing, my entire DVD collection is gone. I've no idea what happened.

The thing is under the warranty so will be going back to Texas tomorrow, I don't think they recover the data though, from what I understand they simply send you the replacement, as if it is going to do any good re: my DVD collection that is now gone.

07/14/08 Update:

The replacement drive has arrived and it seems to be working ok. I found another issue which is more of Microsoft limitation, not Western Digital. The drive comes formatted in FAT32 format and per Microsoft this format does not support files larger than 4Gb, to quote their technical support "You cannot create a file larger than (2^32)-1 bytes (this is one byte less than 4 GB) on a FAT32 partition."

As most DVDs routinely exceed 4Gb limitation there are 2 possible options: a) to reformat the drive into into NTFS partition or b)files will need to be split into smaller chunks.

Both are not very appealing, because reformatting into NTFS means losing compatibility with external DVD players and splitting the DVDs means changing the original media.

Customer Review: An excellent device for creating backups. WDH1U10000N
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using two of these devices at work to perform weekly backups on about fifteen Linux (Intel) computers for nearly four months. I first had to reformat them to a ext3 Linux file system. After that, literally, plug and play for our Red Hat boxes. I cannot speak for the speed, with most backups, who cares how fast, if they are completed without errors and the backup device is reliable. What impressed me was / is the durability of these things. I have connected and disconnected this drive many times (500+?) to computers that were powered up with no problems. The connectors seem rugged, often I need (in a hurry) to carry the drive around with the power adapter dangling (not recommended). The backups we do, verify the checksum after a backup and so far have shown zero (0) errors. I ordered one of these today so that I could use it at my home to back up my two Win-XP machines and my one XP/Linux notebook computer. I gave the 'Software' rating five stars only because no software is needed. :) This device may not be sleek or cool but it is reliable and feels like a good book in your hands. I do have five years experience with other WD external backup devices and have never had any bad feelings with WD.

Customer Review: Works With Dish Receivers
Summary: 5 Stars

I am using this with the Dish Vip612 receiver and its my second HD I have attached to it. I can't attest to longevity but can tell you all I did was connect it and the receiver recognized it and formatted it, no problem. I have 2 other WD 750GB HDs I am using with Dish receivers with little problem. The only thing that happens is that they do not go into sleep mode and if not used for awhile, you have to recycle the power to them becauswe they are sluggish on playback or don't respond at all. I am just starting to add more HDs to my receivers and the set up I have is to add a USB hub. I am using the CyberPower High-Speed 7-Port USB Hub. The receiver only recognizes one HD at a time, so you have to use a single disk HD like this one. And if you have several connected to a hub, it will only see one so the solution I have used is to plug them into a American DJ PC-100A 8 Channel Power Strip with Lighted Toggles and turn on the HD I am using, while powering down the others. This is cheaper and you can add more HDs then with a USB switch.
