Customer Review: Okay drive, but the backup software is a "trial" {only}

"My Book - Put Your Life On It" says the box. Well, maybe "on" it, but certainly "into" it, I'd say. Read on. I've had my 1 TB "My Book" about a month now. I'm glad I got it because the week after I did my first image of my primary hard drive, I had a power supply failure and the primary operating system hard drive crashed with it. I had to get a new power supply and then rebuild my XP Home system and restore all the apps and data. Fortunately the "My Book" had almost all my data backed up on it. That's the good part. It basically did what it was supposed to do.
My complaints, and reason for the reduced number of stars, are two:
1. As others have noted the 1 TB capacity of the drive is probably pushing the limits of a USB 2.0 system. The version I bought also has the Firewire and eSATA hardware connections and I'm using the Firewire option. But it's still painfully slow, with 1 GB of data taking over an hour to back up and the same to restore. This may be, in part, due to the hardware interface limitations, but also to the included back-up software by Memeo. I cannot yet comment on the longevity of drive's life (about which others have commented). But backing up 240 GB of data (lots of music and video) takes over a day and a half to achieve and the same to restore. Which leads me to:
2 The back-up utility included with the drive and provided by Memeo is a major problem. First it's limited in the options you have for backing up. It does an image of the entire drive it's backing up but there is no control over it once it starts, short of deleting the "profile" you've created (in which you specify the drive to be imaged) and getting it to stop. In addition, there is no obvious capability to create an emergency start disc for when the operating system's hard drive crashes, as was my case. This is a big deal. I had to reformat the drive and re-install Windows XP by hand, to get the computer to boot so I could access the "My Book" hard drive and my backed-up data. And of course that meant re-installing the applications by hand, too, and a couple of days of time. Gee, isn't that part of what a back-up program is supposed to do? Not this one. Worse, the software you do get is only a trial version that requires you to purchase a new software license after 30 days. Because it's not included in the price of the hard drive! This isn't obvious from the description on the box listing its contents. In addition to the hardware (drive, USB and Firewire cables, AC adaptor, and Quick Install Guide[no user manual!])the box lists "Software" and "Backup software" as the contents. The software is all pre-loaded (no disc, emergency operating system or otherwise, and no ability to create one). When you turn on the drive following the connection of the cables (straight-foreward and easy enough), the software license pops up and ask you to say "yes" to agreeing with it with the standard legal mumbo-jumbo before proceeding. There is no indication in this agreement (well, who knows what's buried five or six pages down, but who reads all that anyway, right?)that the software is limited to a 30-day trial period and that one must purchase a full license for $39 more. Based upon the box and the user agreement, there is no reason to expect a temporary use of the software. Memeo's discusion web page is fraught with complaints from buyers who are justifiably upset at having to shell out another $39 on top of the original cost of the drive. There are a lot of FAQs, discussion forums, and "contact" pages to look at, but the bottom line is that Memeo says you have to buy a license for the software at additional cost after 30 days. This makes the cost of "My Book" some 25 -30 percent more expensive than one originally plans. Apparently, Western Digital and Memeo couldn't reach an agreement to provide the software as part of the deal. Shame on WD and shame on Memeo. So,WD opts to pass that little cost on to the end user, surprise, surprise! And you still have inferior software. After getting nowhere with Memeo for an activation "key" I am going to forgo this software and it's cost and purchase instead either Acronis' "True Image Home 2009" or StorageCraft's "ShadowProtect Desktop" v. 3.3. They cost the same or a few dollars more, but my research tells me that they are much more capable than Memeo's offering and they offer real customer service to boot (pun intended!). But this decision means I'll likely have to re-do the back-up yet one more time. I'm hopeful that this time it won't take over a day to do with different and better software. We'll see.
