Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Passport Essential 2.5" 320GB USB Hard DriveCustomer Review: I am on my fifth drive now Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this 1.5 years ago. After about 9 months, this first drive clicked. After another episode of clicking, I decided to exchange, to be on the safe side. RMA and customer service then seemed to be in the US. The second drive started clicking after about 2 months. I decided to just back up to an old, clunky external and live with the clicking. Then, it started to disconnect on its own every now and then, only to reconnect about a minute later. That became a nuisance, so I started the exchange process again; customer service now seems to be in India. The third drive only let me copy about 1/2 of my data (ca. 50 GB) onto it, then started clicking and complaining. The fourth drive let me save about 5 GB onto it, then disconnected completely and never connected again. They are now sending me a fifth drive. I am definitely buying from someone other than WD next time!
Hope that solid state will soon be affordable...
Customer Review: Horrible customer service Summary: 1 Stars
As I had just spent hours transferring about 300GB of Data into the new drive, It just stopped working and stopped being recognized by both my MacBook, which is brand new, and my PC. Ok, this stuff happens from time to time, but Western Digital has by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced as an owner of tons of different electronics. After bugging me on the phone for about an hour with stupid questions and requests (plug it and try this and that, etc...), they finally accepted the obvious fact that the product was defective, and told me to ship it to them AT MY OWN expense to send me back a REFURBISHED one. Conclusion, I ended up paying more than the cost of a new drive and ended up with a refurbished one. It works fine but I will question the reliability every time I use it and ended up keeping my old (non-portable) hard drive as a back up of my back up. Rock on, WD!
Customer Review: Excellent QUALITY Portable Drive Summary: 5 Stars
I currently have 2 of these drives: 60GB and a 120GB and I am looking to get the 320GB. I have had both these drives now, since they were first introduced, and I am looking to upgrade. So,for me, quality and performance outweigh the price. WD makes a very fine product. Just know that because it is USB 2.0 with no AC, means it will not be as fast as internal drives or USB with AC power. So, with that being said, use this drive for your backups only. I think you will be extremely pleased. Also, you may not want to use the software that comes with it as it tends to slow the drive down somewhat. I formatted the drive as soon as I got it, so it worked well for me - more than well! I picked up the case (Case Logics), from BJs for 9.99. Sam's has it for 14.99, but the price may have dropped. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THE WD PASSBOOK SERIES EXTERNAL DRIVES. SIMPLY MARVELOUS!
Customer Review: Convenient external drive Summary: 4 Stars
I have used this drive to transport large files back and forth from several location including work, home, and friends' homes. While the drive won't win any speed records, the convenience, size, capacity, and solid feel make it well worth the price of admission.
This drive has been in operation for me for six months or so, has survived many trips in the car on rough roads, and even the occasional rough handling at home. There have been no signs of wear, and I would be quite comfortable purchasing a few of these to keep backups of critical data.
I rate things as follows:
1 star - Far below expectations / Completely unsatisfactory
2 star - Below expectations / Unsatisfactory
3 star - Met expectations / Satisfactory
4 star - Exceeded expectations / Very satisfactory
5 star - Far exceeded expectations / Beyond satisfactory
Customer Review: Why buy this one if there are a lot far better choices! Summary: 1 Stars
I would not reccommend this one to any people. I had suffered from so much inconvience.
First is its speed, its max speed is 13MB/s, however my two years old 40GB portable hard drive is about 20MB/s, not even mention nowadays portable hard drive can easily exceeds 30MB/s. Then is its crappy backup software, I simply reformat this hard drive.
Another big inconvience is the usb cord is way too short, only 15 inches, especially when you want to connect to desktop.
I will not forgot to tell you it does not come with a carrying case, considering this hard drive is made of plastic.
Actually you can find far better ones with faster speed, convienct usb connection, and come with all neccessary accessories, so why buy this one which only gives you trouble from time to time.
