Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Passport Essential 2.5" 320GB USB Hard Drive

Customer Review: Excellent drive. **Alpine CDA-9886 users look here**
Summary: 5 Stars

I borrowed one of these from a friend for some temporary storage. I had NO idea how small it is. Unbelievably tiny. Powered up and was found by a Windows XP Pro SP2 system in less than 5 seconds. Transfer speeds are fine.

I wanted to try something else, so before I gave it back to him, I loaded a few folders of home ripped .mp3 files, in folders and also out of folders in the root directory. My car has an Alpine CDA-9886 deck with a USB input and works great with a USB thumb drive. I thought this would be the ultimate in carry around music collections. Forget 16gb or even 32gb thumb drives.

I plugged it into my deck and it would not power up. I'm assuming the deck does not have enough power to operate it normally.

Bad news for my little niche, but it does not detract from a great product.

Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black)
This is better than i thought it would be and is just like the description it is slim and passport size,Light and fits easily in your pocket. I recomend buying a case for it as it scratches and marks easily because of it's shiney finish. It's vey easy to use, just plug it in and away you go.Nothing complicated and the down loading is very fast and it's very quiet,i recomend going through the software and deleting what is not applicable. Also you do not actualy have 320GB and is more like 298GB but it's good value for money. This is my first Western Digital product and am very satisfied with it and would definately buy their products again.

Customer Review: Way too much trouble - WD should read the blogs
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this hard drive both to back up files and to make it easier to share them between three computers. First, it failed to be recognized as a drive either on my XP desktop or my Vista laptop. I hopped online (google "wd passport problems") and there are hundreds of complaints about this model. It draws more power than can be supplied via normal USB 2.0 ports, so you have to spend extra money to buy a y-cord which connects it to two ports. I did this, but then it froze up my XP computer for fifteen minutes every time I booted up, crashing it occasionally.
Anyway, I disabled Autorun, and tried other tricks for about a week, and it's still slow and glitchy. It works differently on each computer I have, so I suggest you borrow one from someone and try it out on a few computers before you put down any cash.

Customer Review: Complete Storage
Summary: 4 Stars

I was skeptical about buying my 320GB Western Digital because of some reviews I had read about it not performing in a pinch. The reviews had me leaning toward a drive that I would have had to carry a lot of cables around to get the storage I needed. But I'm glad I didn't follow my instincts and stayed with my need for convenience. The drive has performed perfectly. I move a lot and my work has to move with me, the WD drive has not missed a beat. I often have to us different computers at different work locations and as I said before this drive hasn't missed a beat. And my conditions aren't the greatest either, I work in Iraq, sand and dust are as common as the heat, the drive has suffered some minor scratches because of the environment and the way the case is designed but I'm not into cosmetics, I need performance.

Customer Review: WD My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive
Summary: 4 Stars

It would be nice if this little drive had an IEEE 1394 Firewire port as well, but it works great. Fairly fast and does not get hot even after hours of operation. Extremely quiet.

The supplied USB cable is a little short but that is easy enough to remedy.

It only has one tasteful USB activity light near the cable plug so it doesn't blind you ever time you plug it in and access data.

It should come with the WD Neoprene case because the gloss finish scratches easily. You can always get the Case Logic case which is a little more protective as well.

I would recommend it to anyone looking for a large capacity ultra portable external hard drive that doesn't light up like a Christmas tree. No extra power cords required and should run fine on most notebook USB ports.
