Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Wacom Intuos3 6 x 8-Inch Pen Tablet

Customer Review: This tablet will spoil you
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned my Intuos 3 since 2005, and I can't believe I have not written a review for it sooner. I am an artist and a scientist, and this tablet has helped me so much in both areas of my life. It is perfect for touching up figures for a paper with Photoshop, as well as doing serious artwork in a program like Painter. The pressure sensitivity makes it feel even more like you're really drawing/painting. Looking at your screen and not your tablet to draw takes some getting used to, but it's a short adjustment period. 6X8 might seem like a small area to work with, but I assure you it's more than enough, at least when using a 19 inch widescreen monitor. The only drawback I have encountered with this tablet is that even with the pressure sensitivity, doing stippling or hatching/crosshatching work (which are common ways to illustrate scientific figures) is difficult. I'm sure with patience and messing with the brushes in Photoshop/Painter I could get it to look more "realistic", but it's still nice to use my Rapidograph set every once in a while. Other cool features: the tablet can be set up in both portrait or landscape mode; touchpads on the left and right can be used to scroll/zoom in and out;I recently got two monitors for my computer-with the push of one of the side buttons on the tablet, the surface of the tablet can be set up to correspond to monitor 1, monitor 2, or stretched over them both! Bottom line, I will never attempt to draw or outline anything on the computer using a mouse again. If using your mouse to work in Photoshop or Painter didn't feel like trying to draw with a brick before, it will after you get this tablet. This is one of the most useful pieces of hardware I have ever purchased for my PC. If you spend a considerable amount of time using photo/drawing programs, this tablet is well worth the investment.

Customer Review: Very useful tool
Summary: 4 Stars

Graphics tablets like the Wacom Intuos3 open up tremendous opportunities for computer artists. After having not used one for years, it was with great pleasure that got this tablet. With a little bit of customization of Photoshop and Illustrator I was up and running and doing things I could not have done without the tablet. It isn't just a matter of being more efficient, it is that the tablet opens up ways of working that simply aren't possible without the mouse.

Although I have a widescreen monitor, I opted for the 6X8 tablet rather than the next larger widescreen size. I was somewhat apprehensive that the difference in aspect ratio would prove a problem, but it has been a total non-issue for me.

The only drawbacks to this product are (1) I don't find the bundled mouse terribly useful, especially when the machine is hooked to a laptop with a trackpad and (2) the included stylus is not as capable as the broad-nibbed stylus that senses barrel rotation. It would be nice if that stylus were included, but for many users I suppose it is not a drawback.

I also that I needed to disable the upper button on stylus because it was too easy to accidentally hit while using the stylus alone. However, since the tablet is sensative of the stylus up to about an inch above it, simply pressing can function as a click and the lower button can be set up as the right click, so no functionality it lost by disabling the upper button. I can't call this a drawback, as my issue is particular to the way I work, and would not bother many users.

The touch strips are useful, and the four buttons on the sides make situations where keyboard + mouse combinations are essential workable without having to balance a keyboard and the tablet.

Overall very good, with only minor areas for improvement.

Customer Review: Functional, light, easy to use--and the perfect upgrade for me.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this tablet to replace my old Intuos2 9x12 and I've been using it constantly since it arrived with no problems. Compared to my old tablet, the size is perfect--a great balance between conserving desk space and having a comfortable drawing area. There's also a marked improvement in responsiveness and the overall feel and quality. It's light and relatively small, so it'll definitely be easy to travel with.

I'm using it mostly for illustration and sometimes retouching photos for myself or my family and I really don't have any complaints so far. The one thing that might leave something to be desired is the mouse, though I'm using it regularly anyway. It feels a little flimsy, particuarly compared to the one that was paired with the Intuos2. However, the convenience of having a responsive, relatively good mouse without the cord and being able to switch back and forth between the stylus and mouse quickly is worth it.

I haven't had any problems with lag, though the mouse sometimes feels a little off. Drawing with the stylus is a breeze, and a relief after using a mouse for a while. The buttons are easy to program. I've had no problems at all with the included drivers, installation and use have been flawless.

I'd recommend this product to anyone looking for an easier way to create or touch up their art digitally, and especially to anyone looking to make the switch from traditional to digital media. I'd also say that if you don't absolutely need the bigger size, the 6x8 is perfect. Additionally, the difference in price compared to graphire line is worth it for the additional features. So I'd say unless you don't need the added features or you require a different size for the work you're doing, you can't go wrong this one.

Customer Review: Great Investment

If your serious about the fine arts or just minor detail in photoshop then this is a must.

1. Its capatible with PC and Mac so yeah
2. It replaces your mouse, ( this is enough of a reason right)
3. No lag from the moment you point your Wacom pen to the tablet. The cursor on the PC/Mac is spot on so no worries there.
4. Quick keys on the tablet help in keeping your fingers off the keyboard, unless you need to type.
5. 6x8 is the best size unless you have a wide screen monitor or would like to work on two, then go for the 6x11 or 9x12.
6. There are no negatives to this tablet if there are I have found none whatsoever.
7. Its super mobile and light and increadably tough, I have droped mine once or twice and there is no scratch or dent or chip on this bad boy.
8. I use Painter X for all you Painter people. There is only one solution to your 8 bit looking art, WACOM. Just draw like you would on a piece of drawing paper with the benifit of erasing as many times as you want without wasteing the quality of your art.
9. The pen has a nib for the drawing side and a plastic errr cap looking thing for the eraser, its simple really.
10. Um people I can realy go on and on but there is not enough time so I well try to update this as much as posible.
If your realy looking for any negative comments then well lets see, the plastic paper thing you draw on comes loose on one side sometimes but thats increadably minor and its a replacable piece on the tablet so yeah.
I have owned this tablet for one and a half months and bought it for $260 its a 6x8 by the way and its the size of a 12inch monitor laptop.

Customer Review: Love it, love it, love it !
Summary: 4 Stars

Only took about an hour to get used to vs using the mouse all the time. Only items left are to break old habits that you don't need with the tablet and pen.

Now THIS is the way to work 8-)

It comes with a very nice mouse too, covers all the things you don't like a pen for.
you can set controls on the mouse for anything you wish and it works very well and does not have to be in sight of the PC, you can use it in your lap or anywhere you can hold the tablet.

Tablet uses USB power and NO batteries in either the pen or mouse.

It CAN'T be perfect... can it ? 4.5 stars ??

Update 09/30/2006

Well better part of 9 months use and I still love it.. has really done wonders for my creative side and is so natural to work with.. not one problem and has never failed in any way with daily use.

Still no problems to report.. Even another updated driver/software is out now. They seem to stay on top of it.

Just wanted to say that Wacom is offering a nice 4 DVD video set about using the product and also hints & tips for them done by pros.

These are FREE for trying the product and the info can be found in current digital photo magazines like "PC Photo" Not sure how long they will have the offer but it's running as of this date.

Update 08/06/2008

Still working just fine with only slight signs of use. Only part that's been replaced are the tips, and that is to be expected.

How did I ever work without this great tool!
