Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch

Customer Review: Use within Sibelius & Logic Pro
Summary: 4 Stars

This review will give you an insight, if you consider buying this tablet in conjunction with professional music software programs like Sibelius and or Logic Pro, as it is in my case. One of my biggest hopes were to "emulate" the "hand writing" feel of writing notes down on a piece of paper as closely as possible with the use of the pen and tablet into Sibelius. It's a marginal success on that front. Yes, you obtain a quasi feel of inputting notes with a pen as you would on a piece of paper but when note value changes occur your other hand needs to step in which then becomes a juggling act (Sibelius). Unfortunately you won't be able to program any ExpressKey to "scroll" through your most commonly used note values for a faster work flow. However, the ExpressKey's can easily be programmed for the all so important "Esc" key function within Sibelius or "Recording" function within Logic Pro for example which is VERY handy. A pity is, that, - as of this writing -, both "zoom in/out" functions within Sibelius or Logic aren't recognized / supported with the touch pad's finger zoom gestures. Also the eraser function of the pen doesn't translate to any of the eraser functions within these two software programs. Would be nice if this could be accomplished in the near future. Finally, don't expect to be able to connect this pen & touch tablet to one of your Apple's keyboard USB connectors; it needs direct computer connection or at least a powered USB hub connection. To sum it up, Wacom's touch & pen has some regretful shortcomings when it comes to the use with above music software programs. But it suits as an additional input device and helps to change up your different hand and finger muscles as opposed to just edit with mouse or track ball alone.

Customer Review: great combination tablet for use w fingers+pen but the Mac driver is bad
Summary: 3 Stars

A well done tablet if it weren't for the driver.

This mid-range wacom tablet is a significant improvement over models. You can now get both finger and pen input for a good price. Although touching the pad with your palm while using the pen can lead to unintended mouse movements. Also adds useful mouse gestures that can be used for example to jump forward and backward in the history of your browser, turn pictures in Preview and other graphics programmes and enlarge/reduce. However, not too many pieces of software understand those gestures coming from the Bamboo tablet. Overall, the function of the tablet is great.

Now for the dark side. On my mid-range MacBook my use of the table was much worsened by the interaction of the tablet driver and the OS. My mouse movement coming from the tablet are often frozen when the computer is busy with another programme. It happened regularly that while starting up a hungry app like Photoshop, the mouse movement from the tablet would halt and jitter while the integrated touch pad of the laptop still worked fine. It appears that the input from the tablet takes a low priority and can be blocked out in situation of high CPU/memory burden. It may be that the driver of the tablet on the Mac is not sufficiently well written to support swift interaction with the operating system or that the problem lies with the OS itself. Whatever causes the delays, it makes me not want to use the tablet if it means waiting for a 1-3 seconds for the Sleeping Beauty tablet to reawaken.

Bottom line: Great tablet if it weren't for driver/OS interaction problems on the Mac.

Customer Review: Awesome Bamboo that's a BAM !!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first tablet. I'm 23 years old and I enjoy drawing Anime and I got interested into owning a tablet. I have never known about Wacom, but I have seen that the company's high in the professional and individual ratings. I purchased the Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch on July 3, 2010 and received it without any damage on July 9, 2010. I installed it on July 11, 2010 on my Windows 7, 64 bit PC. Installation was a breeze from hooking the Bamboo to the USB, installing the setup CD and the bundled software, and downloading the most recent drivers from the Wacom's site (I recommend that everyone should check to see if there are any recent drivers) and finally taking advantage of my Bamboo >,<

The Pen has that natural feeling of a real pen. It's light as a feather. The Bamboo has the feeling of a real paper as the surface is textured. I have had little difficulties with looking at my monitor (32" monitor while I draw on the surface area) but now after some practice it's second nature. Did I mention I'm writing my review on the Bamboo? Lol, the experience is exactly the same as writing on notebook. The word-recognition is amazing so varied handwriting styles are easily recognizable.

I won't go into all the details as others have already reviewed, but this is the perfect choice for the beginning-tablet user. It's affordable for those who are students as I am (Architecture major) and who are on a budget the Bamboo is really stylish, thin, and versatile. The packaging was amazingly thought of by the Wacom people. It's a "Macbook " kind of experience seeing the box and opening it. This Bamboo, while not so much complex as its older brothers, deserves to be noticed for its price, features, and design.

Customer Review: Great Product!
Summary: 5 Stars

First I want to organize this review by talking about its separate features and usability.

Here are my specs:

Windows 7 OS (I love it! - Windows XP convert)

Sony VAIO VGN-SR290
3 GB of RAM
2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo P8400
Integrated Graphics

Multi-touch (4/5): It works. But a bit choppy, I think, because of no browser or software truly utilizing the zoom in and out feature for smooth transitioning. I used safari and it was choppy too. Internet Explorer was a pain and Firefox was ok. Well, it works, I guess.

Pen (5/5): It takes some time getting used to. I am a mouse user, so using the pen took time, but upon hours of practice, it works fine. During drawing with Paint and other Adobe drawing tools, it's great. I really enjoy it. The precision could be better, but this isn't a multi-hundred dollar tablet, but this is great.

I won't mention the features because there's no point. If you bought this, you bought it because of the pen tablet and it works great.

Mouse replacement (4/5): It'll definitely take a while, but sometimes, you don't need and 8 x 6 touch pad. hehehe!

Overall (4.5/5): The price is great. The product is slick and solid. There's really nothing more you can ask for, besides a bigger tablet. If that is the case buy the multi-hundred dollar one. This is the best tablet for the price and for the use. Even professionals can really appreciate this product. You don't need such a giant and precise tablet. If you want to be so detailed, then zoom in to 500% then! That's what I do, when I need more detailed drawings.

So, buy this. BUY IT NOW!

Customer Review: Exactly what I wanted, perfect for photo restoration!!
Summary: 5 Stars

For years, I've idiotically been trying to restore old photos(early 1900's-70's)just using a mouse. I often got frustrated because I couldn't get the control and small movements I needed to do them properly. It's something I really love doing, so I decided it was time to step up the gadgets to make the process better.

I just recently got Corel Paintshop Pro x2 Ultimate, which isn't Adobe Photoshop, but for me it's more user friendly and does what I'm looking for. When I started reading a book about the program, it recommended using a Wacom tablet. I was just thinking to myself "What?! How come no one told me about this!?". Now they have, and I love it!

Within an hour of getting it I was off restoring my family photos with the perfect tool. Finally. I ran tutorial that came with the tablet just to figure out what gestures will work for the touch, and what the buttons on the pen were for(though you can program them to your own personal settings). The tutorial was great, making sure I did the steps correctly before moving on.

I had heard it was difficult to adjust from mouse use to the pen and/or touch. I personally think there is barely a learning curve. I'm 29, and while a huge gadget lover, I'm no graphic designer. This was easy to start and learn. I can't wait to figure out what else I can use it for(besides the obvious mouse capabilities and photo restoration). I had been on the fence between just the pen tablet, instead of this combo. But I'm glad I got the pen and touch, since I've already found myself implementing the gestures into my computer work. Toss in the extra thirty bucks or so and get this, you won't be sorry!
