Customer Review: Not dependable, will lose all your information!
Summary: 1 Stars

I would give it zero stars if I could. It's a nice product...if it works. I've had it for 2 years and put loads of pictures and videos on it. I made hard copies of most of it, thank goodness, but still. I will never be able to recover all my information.

It has acted fishy in the past. Sometimes turning on, sometimes not. This last time I tried turning it back on, it won't turn on at all. The power adapter seems like it doesn't work, and we tried a different one, but it still doesn't work.

So, I have to find out some way to get my info off and probably won't be using External Harddrives to store my info on. I'll just have to use discs, as annoying as it is.

Products just aren't built to last, and it's a shame and a headache.

Save your money. Store your info the old fashioned way on tapes and discs.

Customer Review: Excellent external HD
Summary: 5 Stars

I was in desperate need of extra HD space, so I purchased this HD. It was extremely easy to set up, and the dual interface capabilities are wonderful. It's a breeze to use the USB 2.0 with my Windows PC and the Firewire with my Macs.

The one problem I have with it is I can't figure out how to get it to mount back onto my computer after I've ejected it from my desktop. I would expect the single large button on the front to do that, however I have to unplug the power cable and plug it back in in order to get it to mount. Or, I can put my computer to sleep and when it wakes up the disk is mounted.

Besides that small glitch the HD has treated me quite well and I would recommend it to anyone looking for additional storage space. Keep in mind though, if you computer has a FW 800 port, there is a version of the HD that has that port also.

Customer Review: Backup software is slow - IF YOU DONT REFORMAT TO NTFS
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this drive and ran the backup software to back up all of my music and pictures automatically. Then ran it the first time. 2 hours later it is still running. I only had 10G of data to record. It turns out that the backup software apparantly transfers data in large blocks of data that the FAT32 formatting does not handle well (FAT32 has a 4G limit). If you reformat the hard drive to NTFS, however, it will backup MUCH faster. Most drives come formatted NTFS.

If you keep the drive formatted in FAT32 (and I dont know why you would), then MANUALLY backing up - by dragging and dropping, it will work MUCH faster. Less than 10 minutes (I didn't time it but it was MUCH better-else I would have returned it). So Western Digital - either make your backup software smarter or just format the hard drive to NTFS. Hey WD - how about FIXING this!!!!!

Customer Review: Garbage
Summary: 1 Stars

I'd read reviews all over the net and this seemed to fit my needs for a reliable external drive to go with the lappy (Dell M65)...particularly given the WD name. I was wrong, wrong, wrong. This drive is garbage... noisey and runs very hot.

Worked fine for a few months and then became unstable. On/off button would work intermittently, hot swap is out of the question, BSOD (blue screen of death) became more frequent...until it finally quit.

$400 for data recovery. Got 95% of the data back. Neither I nor my clients have time to wait 3 weeks for WD techs to muddle thru it.

My best guess is that when the ambient room temp is above 76F it just goes south, despite being in a well ventilated area.

Listened to my IT guy this time and bought a Seagate FreeAgent instead. Silent, cooler, boots faster.

Customer Review: Too many problems, no matter how easy to set up
Summary: 2 Stars

I have had my MY Book for over 6 months. A review done when a product is fresh out of the box doesn't tell you much about the longevity of the machine or how it functions down the road. I was SO EXCITED to get this. I have tons of photos and video that I wanted to back up and remove from my computer. Thankfully I backed all of my photos up on DVDs too. They are gone from the external drive. One day there was a cyclical redundancy thing going on and I could not access my folder. Since then I have had other issues, many that people have mentioned already. I really don't want to have to go out and get another external drive, but this one truly is not reliable. Half the time I go to access it my computer thinks it is not there (both with firewire & USB) There are disk write failures all of the time and I never know when the drive will actually work.
