Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital 1TB My Book Mac Edition USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

Customer Review: Died after 3 months of use
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this drive in March of 2009 and it sat on my desk in its original packaging for 8 months. In November, I started storing photos and music on it, only using it for file storage. Yesterday, it died while I was working on an HTML file I had stored on it. I tried it with another computer, with another USB cable, and with another power adapter, all to no avail. I can hear it attempting to spin up 3 times before it gives up. My XP machine still recognizes it, but Device Manager tells me that it has no hard drive space or data. If you are going to purchase this drive, make sure you have your data backed up somewhere else as well.

Customer Review: good stationary back-up choice
Summary: 5 Stars

selected this backup drive for my G5 imac at home as additional backup (I already have a t1 time capsule/time machine set-up) and as a time machine back-up for my server in the office.

very happy, super easy set-up, just connected it, the mac asked 'do you want time machine to use this as your back-up' clicked on yes. ready go.

It was the first time I bought a western digital book, and I am much more satisfied than with my previous lacie choices. I only have it for a month now, so I don't know about the longevity yet, but it certainty works like a charm. comes very recommended.

Customer Review: Crashed after using with Time Machine for a Month
Summary: 3 Stars

I still gave this drive 3 stars, but I hooked it up new out of the box for Time Machine backups, left it on 24/7 and when it filled up (Time Machine indicated it was full) it crashed. Just shows the horizontal white light moving from left to right, never "connects" to the computer.

Maybe it was the way I used it, but I've been using a LaCie 1TB now for Time machine backup and no problems for 4 months.

I have a lot of WD 500MB drives I've used for backup and they're all fine, so maybe it was just this unit.

Customer Review: Great Buy
Summary: 5 Stars

I had difficulty at first getting this to work with my archaic Mac OS X 10.4.11, but I finally figured out that once hooked up, I needed to restart the computer and it ran just fine. It is a great piece of hardware. I misunderstood the specs and thought that it could plug into my firewire, but it actually plugs into USB only. No biggie for me, but I want the rest of you to know my mistakes so you can learn from them. :) I love buying with the Amazon Prime because I am almost always guaranteed a two-day delivery.

Customer Review: Works only on one Mac, not the other
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this external hard drive for two reasons. Primarily, I wanted a backup for my new iMac, running OS 10.5.8. The drive booted up fine and has been quietly and with no problems for that purpose for about a month. The second reason was to move files from an older Mac, running OS 10.4.11. According to the packaging that came with the drive, it should have worked fine. However, I couldn't get it to work with that machine. I tried the fixes suggested on the website, but to no avail. Be warned.
