Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Western Digital 1TB My Book Mac Edition USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

Customer Review: Perfect for me with one small exception
Summary: 4 Stars

I have to agree with previous reviewers who stated that the setup of this drive is as simple as "plug and play". But hey, isn't that what the whole Mac experience is all about?

My only "complaint" regarding this device is the lack of an on/off switch.
I use my external drive as a backup drive and generally backup manually once a week or so . This device is powered up when it senses that your Mac is up and running and this might be an outstanding feature for those backing up via time machine or those who routinely use the drive for day-to-day tasks. For me, it means having to unplug the device from the wall or removing the USB cable from the back of my Mac when not in use.

Admittedly, this is a small inconvenience but the lack of a power on/off switch made the difference between a 4-star and a 5-star rating.

In any case, I look forward to a long and productive relationship with this WD drive

Customer Review: Couldn't be easier!
Summary: 5 Stars

Paired with Apple's Time Machine backup software (which is part of the current OS X.5 operating system), backup are a breeze! I bought this to use with my MacBook which lives in the living room most of the time but does move around. When I want to run a backup, I just plug in the USB cable from the hard drive to my Mac and the rest is automatic. If you would be using this with a desktop model, you could leave it connected all the time. I just hook it up every few days and it backs up everything that's changed on my computer. (Also, part of the great thing about Time Machine is that it keeps more than just the most recent backup. It keeps all the past backups as well until you start running out of space.)

Also, this drive is whisper quiet which is great since I keep it in the living room. Don't notice it at all!

Customer Review: Works fine with Windows, too
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't have a Mac, but BestBuy was closing these out recently for sixty-five bucks plus tax with free shipping, so I grabbed one. It will work fine with your Windows PC if you reformat it to NTFS. Takes about an hour to do, then it's ready to go. At that price, I'm willing to invest an hour in reformatting it to work with Windows.

I notice people complaining about it being slow. Duh - it's a USB drive. Of course it's going to be slow. If you want a fast external drive, buy one that works with FireWire, which all Macs support natively.

Still, you can't beat it for the price. It was just under seventy dollars with tax - that's less than seven cents a gigabyte. Even Amazon's price is around ten cents a gig - how can you go wrong?

Customer Review: The Best External Hard Drive I have ever used
Summary: 5 Stars

I have tried many external hard drives and I have found nothing that compares to the WD My Book Mac Edition. My Book is plug and play with no formatting, it turns itself on when the Mac is powered up and off when the Mac is shut down, the cords are long and sturdy; they fit in firmly at both ends and will not jiggle loose even when connected to unsteady laptops. And perhaps best of all they run cool and quiet. I work mine hard (several hours per day of active use, everyday) and have had no performance issues. The USB 2.0 transfer included with this My Book is adequate for my needs. in my opinion, for the price, My Book Mac Edition is easily the best external hard drive for a Mac.

Customer Review: Excellent...
Summary: 5 Stars

Powerful, so quiet that it's virtually inaudible (unless, that is, you put your ear right next to it, which is a pretty unlikely situation in any "normal" environment!), huge capacity, simple set-up (plug it in and it's immediately recognised and available for use on your desktop), looks great, unobtrusive read/write light and reasonably priced... what more could you ask for?

The only question is will it last the course or pack-up in a year or so's time? Judging by other comments on the Internet, Western Digital drives are among the best for longevity & reliability so there's good reason to believe that it won't... time will tell.
