Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of AT&T SL82318 DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone, Silver/Gray, 3 Handsets

Customer Review: Surpassed my expectations
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking for a cordless phone & answering system to replace my corded one and was so pleased with this phone I added 3 more handsets for a total of 6 a few weeks after I got it. I selected this model because it was a DECT phone that was wall mountable, and it is truly wall mountable not like some models that claim to be and really just give you a little plastic shelf to mount on the wall and sit the phone on it.

I've had it about 4 months and have found it has great sound quality, long battery life, and does not interfere with my wireless LAN. I've also fallen in love with many of the phone's other features like the speaker phone in the handset, the ability to plug in a headset, the built in phone directory available from all handsets, and by far my favorite feature - the intercom. I live in a three level single family home and very often I find myself on one floor while my kids or husband are on another. The intercom is a real time and effort saver allowing me to ring the handset in what ever room my family is in from where ever I am in the house (or yard) and ask a quick question. I've even used it as a snooze alarm when getting my kids up for school in the morning by ringing the the handset in their room as a reminder it's time to get up.

I really cannot think of one criticism of this phone. It has truly surpassed my expectations.

Customer Review: Impressive!
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this cordless set today and it is better than I expected. I was using a Uniden 2.4Ghz single handset model that was good, but since it was only one handset, I had major problems with the battery dying out in the middle of conversations and that got very frustrating, especially when it was a business call. So I finally upgraded to multiple handsets and I am impressed with this AT&T model. The convenience of being able to switch handsets when the battery dies is priceless! Everything is easy to set up with step-by-step instructions right on the units! Unlike older models I've used, the battery chamber is conveniently designed with grooves so you can easily slide the battery cables in place so they don't get in the way of placing the cover back on. One side of the battery says "This Side Up" and a little note reminds you to match the color-codes.
The sound is crystal clear and long range with the DECT technology and I never hear an echo of my voice in the speaker which is also a plus.
The base has an option to turn ringer off and I find that useful since the base is located in a family member's bedroom and I often take calls at night while he is sleeping.
This system is well designed for those who hate reading instruction manuals and who want to set electronics up quickly as I do. The quality of this system surpasses it's price by far.

Customer Review: Works Great, With Fewer Bells & Whistles
Summary: 4 Stars

A fine phone, esp. with three handsets. The old Uniden wasn't good -- poor range within the house, and only two phones. So this is a huge improvement with three phones that work from anyplace in the house. The features work well, and the sound is terrific. Why count down a little? Simply because there are a few features this phone lacks that the old one had: For example, with the old phone, you could check messages on the answering machine from any handset: On this one (so far as I can tell), it's only from the "base" unit. That's okay -- means a trip to the kitchen where it's set up -- but that is one feature is doesn't have. On the other hand, it has one that I really like: You program in phone numbers, and they are all exchanged instantly around the system, so every phone has all the numbers. On the old phone, some handsets had some numbers; others other numbers, and you had to go through a complicated system to synchronize all.

Overall? For sound, for quality, for convenience, this is just great. I haven't used an external headset, but will try that at some point, and I believe the self-contained AT&T headset will work with this too (future purchase). I was using my cell phone for almost everything because I so hated the home phone. Now I'm moving back to the home phone for more things.

Customer Review: Surpassed my expectations
Summary: 5 Stars

In spite of the generally glowing reviews left by other Amazon users, I still had a bit of fear that this phone would be like previous cordless phones I've had -- sloppy sound and white noise.

But this phone has proven to be outstanding. At first I thought that three phones was a bit excessive, but it's been a boon to not have to race to answer a single centrally located phone. Sound is very good, with no interference -- so, that DECT 6.0 digital technology is something that actually works, rather than something that just makes hollow promises.

Range is also quite impressive -- as an experiment, I took one of the phones out to my condo's parking lot [at least 100 feet] and the signal remained fairly strong. I'll never need to actually do that, but it's nice to know that this phone's capability is solid.

One minor quibble: When answering the phone, there's a delay of about 1-2 seconds before the call is truly engaged.

I haven't explored all the functions, such as call log and phone directory. Frankly, I'm in no rush -- I use my cell phone most of the time, but still wanted a landline phone as a back-up. I will say that it looks like there's a bit of a learning curve involved in those, but it's negligible since I'm giving this phone five stars.

Customer Review: Great phone, but self-destructs in 11 months ....
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, first let me say that my wife and I have been very happy with this phone (we have 3 handsets). All the positive reviews are right on. I particularly like the intercom feature, as the bride is often on the 2nd floor at her computer, while I'm in the basement in my home office. BUT....

I can't give it 5 stars, because, after 10 months of great service, it appears to be self-destructing. Voice quality in both directions has gone from great to poor. I can sometimes her my own voice in the receiver. Redial works sometimes, but very often it misses the first digit. It is especially problematic when trying to deal with phone menus (Press "1" for this, "2" for that, etc.), as the system at the other end cannot pick up the tone for the digit I pressed.

I first thought that the line coming into our home might be the cause, but after digging out an older wired phone and trying it (which worked just fine), I have concluded it is the AT&T SL82318.

AT&T's product registration does nothing to help you with warrantee coverage either - in order to have the phone replaced, I must produce a proof of purchase. Product registration seems to be only for marketing study and data harvesting only. We will see how this plays out ....
