Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of AT&T SL82318 DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone, Silver/Gray, 3 HandsetsCustomer Review: Sounds like a land line Summary: 4 Stars
I've had these AT&T phones for a few months now and so far I have not been disappointed. I am not a person who is going to use all of the features of the phone, but for basic phone service, this definitely does good. I don't have caller ID, I don't use speed dial, and we don't use the intercom at all, so I won't be reviewing those features.
What I like the best about this is that no matter where I am in the house or in the yard, it sounds like I'm on a land line. I have no static whatsoever, and I have a wireless network going in my house. Neighbors on all sides also have their own networks, and there's no interference at all. I have one room in my house where reception with the old phone was impossible and the wireless network is horrible in there too, but the AT&T phone still sounds crystal clear there.
The answering machine works as expected, no complaints there, although the clock is weird -- it asks for the year, but not the month or day, so when you play a message, the timestamp says, "2008 9:25 PM Saturday" which is just odd.
My biggest dislike, and what's keeping this from being a 5-star review, is that the phone is too skinny and it causes neck cramps when you try to hold it in between your ear and shoulder. I had to get a headset to deal with that (or use the speakerphone). Another annoyance is the inability to name your handsets, although since I don't use the intercom it not a big deal in my household.
Customer Review: A very Satisfied purchaser Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this phone system to replace another similar priced system that I was very dissatisfied with. The primary issue was sound - over the phone and listening to the recorded messages. After reading all of the reviews for systems I decided to go for the AT&T because it seemed like it was good for anyone who just wanted a simple system that just did the basics, and did those well, with a short learning curve. This system lived up to those requirements. While overall it is not a simple system and has many options that I am not interested in, for what I wanted it for it was just insert the batteries in each handset, plug them all in, set the time and date on the answering machine, record your message, and we were up and running in less then 20 minutes. I really like the handset size - long enough that it feels like we are actually speaking into the mouthpiece rather then into the space below the handset. The sound over both the handsets and the recorder is excellent - even satisfied my wife who is a very tough customer when it comes to sound quality. I have not tried to see how far we can get from the base to still use the phone, but I have not found any where in my house that is outside the range. The main requirement of a phone is that the sound is clear and it does not take weeks to learn the basics; for those points it is one of the best phones available. I'll leave the more esoteric attributes to other reviewers to review.
Customer Review: I like it, mostly Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this because my old Panasonic didn't give me enough range (I have an office in another building on the property away from my phone jacks). This has great range and sound, nice ring-tones, and a pleasant feel to it. It automatically updates each handset when you save numbers to memory. On the other hand, if you erase caller id's on one handset, it does so to all of them simultaneously. (I didn't realize I would want this, but I wish I could blank out the previous caller ID's on only one handset while leaving them on the others for reference.) The only other thing I didn't think of and wish I had was the ability to pick up calls from the main base without a phone (yes, I admit, there are times when the phone rings and I can't find ANY of the three handsets!). Also, I haven't found a way to turn off the ringer on the base altogether. However, all, in all, I'm quite happy with it. I've had it for about 6 months. Battery time seems quite good, subjectively. (There is no battery level indicator on the phone, tho, so you don't know which handset is about to go dead until it does).)
May, 2010:
After 16 months, I'm still happy with it, still have the same gripes about battery indicator. Also my batteries have started failing (20 min talk time) (one did only a few months after I bought it). I would think they should last longer, but maybe not. Also its too easy to erase all the caller id's by mistake.
Customer Review: Fantastic!!! Summary: 5 Stars
If you have been looking for a cordless phone set, look no more!! This has got to be the best phone system I have ever used! The features of the phone are phenominal and are all useful! The absolute best thing about these phones is the range! My family lives in a small town and we can literally take our cordless phone with use to a neighbors home six doors away and this phone still works & is crystal clear!!
Another nice feature is that only the base unit requires a phone line. All of the other handsets only need an outlet, which is convenient for placing the handsets virtually anywhere! The display screen lets you know if someone is using the phones so you don't accidentally pick up a handset during a conversation and start dialing another number (happened quite frequently in my home!) The intercom feature is also very useful as well as the speaker phone feature, which is available on all the handsets, not just the base unit. I like the nice light up feature of the phones at night, makes viewing the numbers very easy.
We have used Uniden, Panasonic & other manufacturers cordless phone sets & this is hands down the best phone to date. I read the review in Consumer Reports as well as reading the reviews here on Amazon and based my purchase on that information. I am extremely pleased with the decision to buy these phones and I'm sure anyone else buying this product will be also!
Customer Review: Generally good all around Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this phone system because it was highly rated in Consumer Reports. Amazon pricing plus coupons made the price competitive with non-answer machine units. We did not need and will not use the answer machine part of this system so we cannot rate it. The Intercom feature works well, use of multiple handsets on an incoming call works well, call and ringer volume are good, lighted keys and screen are very nice and the range has been good. The listening sound quality is muffled but acceptable. The units worked well with an old hands-free ear piece..a plus. We wish for a flashing light on the handsets indicating voice mail..a small quibble. It is on the base unit. Speaker phone capability on each handset works well. The directory function is clunky, having to page through one at a time or use letter keys to find stored numbers. So far we have not found a speed dial function which would be nice to have. The manual seems well written and easy to follow. The battery charge light is lit all the time. We don't know if this means the batteries are constantly charging. If that's the case their life will be short. They are proprietary batteries so they could be costly to replace. After registering the phones on line, ATT sent a number of Emails advertising other products for sale despite our request rejecting such messages. A second request seems to have stopped those Emails. After several weeks of use, so far so good.
