Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of AT&T 993 Corded Phone, Black, 1 HandsetCustomer Review: Good Phone, poor customer service from AT&T Summary: 1 Stars
I love this phone. It has all the features I wanted and works great with my headset. One problem though - The "9" button sticks 90% of the time. When pressed, it emits this very long tone. It isn't a matter of cleaning the phone - this happens on programmed numbers too. I use this phone for business so went to AT&T to get help or exchange it. They have no real humans via phone support and have sent me the same form letter email saying that I could "take advantage of" their exchange program by packaging up my phone mailing it back to them (paying my own postage), then wait 2-3 weeks for a new phone to arrive. Really? I paid full price for a brand new working phone and they want me to invest even more? Seriously, that has to be the worst form of customer support I've seen in a while. I conduct business from this phone - how am I supposed to go without a phone for 3 weeks? I gave them a chance to resolve before I posted my feedback here...they sent the same form letter again. Nice. I guess this is the drawback of ordering online - even amazon doesn't have an exchange program. I'll live with the defect because I just don't have the time to invest in sending this one back. If you order this phone or any from AT&T, keep your fingers crossed...
Customer Review: Fails the Basics Summary: 2 Stars
I've owned this phone for 8 months now, using it in a home office. I won't disagree with other reviewers that this phone has great features for the money, etc. However, that doesn't matter to me because the phone fails in its fundamental purpose: being a telephone.
The speakerphone is lousy. The mic is overly sensitive to sounds coming from the phone itself (e.g., the conversation you presumably want to hear) and cuts out the speaker so you lose a lot of clarity. You can mitigate this by sticking some tape or a yellow-sticky over the mic (and speaker) but then it makes it hard for people to hear you. You can also mute the phone but that can be a hassle if you're actively participating in the conversation.
The other annoyance is that the number pad can't keep up with my dialing speed. I'll punch in a number, see clearly in the display that it was the correct number, and will be unable to connect. Same with conference call pass codes. You have to type the numbers more slowly for it to keep up. Not sure if there are better options but knowing what I know, I would not buy this phone again.
On the bright side, if you never use a speaker phone, and you're a slow dialer, this might be a great phone for you.
Customer Review: Two-line phone great for home use Summary: 4 Stars
Not everyone would find a 2-line desk telephone necessary, but you don't need to have an office to appreciate its convenience. For my usage, I chose to limit my AT&T land line to essentially local calling with no extras and simultaneously decided to add an Internet-based (VOIP) setup. Chose Ooma because it provides a conventional phone number and co-exists well with the land line, making a 2-line phone a worthwhile investment. Most outgoing calls are via the VOIP connection while the AT&T line not only can respond to incoming calls but provides for a fax connection (which VOIP is less suited for) and serves as a backup for all phone service if needed. This 2-line desk unit has all the features you could ask for---caller i.d. and call waiting (which comes with the Ooma VOIP service), a 100-entry phone book, speakerphone, connection for headset, and 3-way conference calling. There's even a data port integrated with Line 2 and volume adjustments for both line ringers and for listening. Sound quality is very good, better than most economy-priced products I've used, and the instrument (only in black)has a substantial feel to it. Overall,an excellent phone at its price.
Customer Review: Avoid this lemon! Summary: 1 Stars
This is a terrible phone. Poorly designed, with fumbly controls for displaying caller ID records. But that's secondary. The build is what's really bad. I've had two of these phones, and both of them failed -- quickly -- in the same way. Right from the start, the number keypads on both of them were flaky. You'd hit the five, and no tone. You'd press it again, and it would stick -- one long tone, that didn't stop until you hung up and started over.
Annoying, but whatever. But then, just weeks later, the keypads failed altogether, within just a few days of each other. Now I'm stuck with two phones (which Office Max won't take back anymore) that are capable of dialing only 3, 6 and 9 (on one) and 2, 5, 4 and 1 on the other.
And even if you decide you'll risk the shoddy keypad, avoid it for other reasons. The speakerphone cuts in and out, muting the sound of the person you're talking to at the slightest sound on your end.
I remember the days when AT&T made good products. But they've clearly gone with the lowest bidder on this one.
Avoid. This. Lemon.
Customer Review: Fantastic phone Summary: 5 Stars
Although it took a few more days to receive this than I thought it would, considering it was over the holidays it was still very fast. I have tried several 2 line phones over the years, including a new one of these. That one turned out to be the best one I've ever had. It has a back-light screen which I need because of the pocket the phone sits in on my desk. It stores 18 numbers in the primary quick call list and another 100 in it's programmed memory. It has an excellent speaker phone and a hook up for a headset. The controls are very intuitive so it's a breeze to work with. But it went "belly-up" (some type of short on line 2 that caused problems with the way the phone handled all incoming call) after 3 years and because of my cheap nature I was very reluctant to pay full price for another one. But when I saw the same phone advertised for almost a quarter of what I originally paid I jumped on it. For this kind of price if I get 3 years out of it I still consider it a bargain. I don't use the data port, but if I did I am positive it would work flawlessly.
