Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Verbatim 94554 700 MB 52x 80 Minute Branded Recordable Disc CD-R, 100-Disc SpindleCustomer Review: better than my previous disks...maybe Summary: 3 Stars
Standard blank disks seem to be getting thinner as the price goes down. It's hard to deny the low prices, though. My last spindle had a lot of duds in it, and my Mac Mini drive was not making it any easier (my PC's seem to burn any old junk that is inserted). These Verbatim disks seem a little better, but even the third of the first ones that I burned failed, and another failed on verification, although it seems to play okay. The problem is that I won't know if something didn't burn right until I hit an annoying hiccup in playback, so we'll see how it goes. I'm a little more optimistic with the Verbatim disks. I don't see the advantage to purchasing "premium" disks since I don't need to burn them like in years past - it's mainly until I have the ability to play mp3's in the cars, which should be soon. Data disks are DVD's, and I DO use premium for that. But I do miss the blank media from a decade ago, when even the cheap stuff was more substantial and I rarely got a dud. But since they were 2X the cost per disk, I'm not complaining.
Customer Review: Verbatim 94554 CD-R Media - A Quality Choice!! Summary: 5 Stars
Verbatim CD-R and DVD-R Media are both high quality media that have played back fine in every device I have ever tried them in during the last 8 years. I have burned approx 400 music CD-Rs and 250 video DVD-Rs using Nero/four different DVD burners in three computers and have played back on many, many different devices with zero problems that I can attribute to the media. If you want reliable burning and then reliable playback in non-computer devices, Verbatim is a good way to go. I have also heard good things about Fugi media, but never tried them as Verbatim has always worked fine for me. I once was told the quality of dye in the Verbatim and Fugi is higher than in most, and burned media will also last longer. My Verbatim CDs from 2002 still play fine, as do all my DVDs (just can't remember exacty how old they are). Of course I don't expose them to the elements in a car (sun and temp extremes) and I try to take good care of them. Amazon with Free Super Saver Shipping is the best place I have found to buy Verbatim Media.
Customer Review: A total loss! Summary: 1 Stars
After seeing the majority of favorable reviews for these, I bought them. A huge mistake. I have now burned 6 of the 50 as music CDs using my computer. The first three were given to a friend to play in her car -- none of the three would play. I burned the other three for myself. Although the CDs would play, some of the songs had a strange type of "interference" sound. It seemed to come up only on certain songs, and only in certain parts of the songs. Nonetheless, it is sufficiently distracting that neither I nor my kids want to listen to these CDs, which are all going to be thrown away. Although I should return the spindle (given that I'm batting 0 for 6), the hassle of packaging it and mailing it back isn't worth the time this will take, so I guess I'll just "eat" the $20. I wish I'd have listened to the reviewer who suggested buying Kodak. Although they are more expensive, I would've saved myself $20 and a lot of aggravation.
Customer Review: Great Price - Bad Purchase! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this spindle to put my LP's on CDR. I've done hundreds in the past and had very few complaints from quite a variety of CD-R manufacturers. However, this spindle from Verbatim are absolutely useless for music CD-R's. My computer burns them, and recognizes them. My car recognizes them and plays them; and my car is usually pretty picky about CD-R's. My TV (ie. DVD/CD player) even plays them. My upper-end Kenwood multi-disc player, where I usually play music, won't find them and it will normally play almost anything!
After trying 6, just in case, I give up. What a bad purchase. They'll now be saved for data only use, and 100 discs (oops, 94 discs) will last me for years. Meantime I have to run over to Wally World and buy some music compatible discs to finish my current project.
Customer Review: Unfortunate Chemical Smell Summary: 3 Stars
What can I say? In all the years I have used CD-R's, going all the way back to the external HP 2X CD burner in 1998, I have never "smelled" a CD-R like these. The plastic has a sort of toxic, strong smell that I could literally taste in the back of my throat after opening this spindle of CD-R's. Never, ever smelled this before on any CD. As far as burning capabilities, they only burn at 32X on my system which is more than capable of burning at 52X with other brands. Right now the rest of the spindle is on my back porch airing out. I have written an email to Verbatim tech support for an explanation of the toxic smell, will report back if answered.
