Customer Review: They're Just NOT That Into DEPENDABLE Blank Media !
Summary: 1 Stars

Most of my experience with blank DVD media has been with stand-alone DVD Recorders. I have purchased seven (7) DVD recorders in the last 3 years. I have tried virtually every available brand of blank media, from the cheap generics to the supposed "best" like Verbatim. I have followed the user manuals/instructions on which types of media are "compatible" with what recorders (of course they have disclaimers telling you to check with "your Hardware Manufacturer" or "your Blank Media Manufacturer" for further instruction and further blame if things go wrong. Due to a lot of variables with hardware, software and the stupid-human factor, not one type of disk works with one type of drive ALL the TIME. I don't really expect perfection, although the Verbatim -R 16X 100 spindle is very very close. THE BOTTOM LINE IS that The real problem is lack of consistency with MOST blank media manufacturers, particularly VERBATIM and MEMOREX. I've simply stopped buying Memorex, because of an intolerable failure rate (easily 75%). However, I've hesitated writing-off VERBATIM because of the success I've had with their -R single layers. I purchased a 25 pack (spindle) of Verbatim +R DL's from Amazon last year and the first 12 burns failed. For some odd masochistic reason, I continued to try them, and the remaining 13 disks burned just fine! Big dummy that I am, I bought TWO more 25 pack spindles of the +R DLs. I am over halfway through the first one with not a single successful burn, all coasters.

This is why DVD recorders have not (and never will) supplant VHS or hard drive recorders for the home market: IT IS NOT A MATURE, DEPENDABLE TECHNOLOGY or PRODUCT.

My BIGGER CONCERN is that we seem to be accepting an outrageously high rate of problems & failure in our high-tech components, especially those for the home market. As someone once said, not too long ago, if the American Auto industry had as many problems with its product as the tech industry, we would be having congressional investigations & special prosecutors. Of course whoever said that wasn't anticipating BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUTS, either. -- end rant--.

Customer Review: Best media hands down
Summary: 5 Stars

After trying every brand available that I could get my hands on, in both retail and online, and local computer shows, and burning tons of coasters (over the past 22 yrs since the first 1x CD-R drives came out), I decided that IMHO, Verbatim is the only brand for which my money will be well spent. I used to shop for media based upon price, and I was 'rewarded' for that by ending up with at least 10% of the discs failing to burn properly, or failing to verify after the burn. This is with CD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+R DL media. Most other 'brands' do not actually manufacture their own media, instead they buy mass-produced generic discs from China and then brand them under their own name, i.e., Maxxell Memorex, HP, TDK, Imation. The actual OEM of these discs can vary from batch to batch depending upon where they are sold, and the quality control seems almost entirely absent other than a visual inspection if there is in fact a blue AZO dye cyanoacrylate layer. There are only 2 other brands besides Verbatim that I know that manufactures their own media, Mitsui (for their 'Gold' product line) and Taiyo Yuden, but unfortunately these brands are not available as widely as Verbatim, and almost never at retail.

I am on a Mac since 2005 and have used a variety of drives from Pioneer, Samsung, and LG, and use the media mostly for data backup, and occasionally for making video DVDs. Using Roxio on Windows before that, as well as Nero, but since I moved to the Mac, I started with Roxio 7 and now am on Roxio Toast Titanium 9 on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and have zero issues with the media, or the software.

I will ONLY ever buy Verbatim media from now on. This purchase I burned all 25 DVD+R DL discs, with no issues, no coasters, and for that, it was WELL worth it. Do yourself a favor and dont buy crappy discs unless you want to waste time and money.

Customer Review: A few glitches
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased the Verbatim brand because I read many positive reviews about it. The first batch that I purchased here I actually got three coasters, I actually still have a few more discs to burn so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. As of now that is one more than I got with a batch of Memorex. I also noticed a minor pause near the end of a couple of the discs I succesfully burned. These pauses were really nothing major. Remember that I'm only refering to the DL discs. In their defense, I do admit that I was working online during those few bad burns. Next ones I burn I will make sure that I'm not doing anything else on the computer and hope that that solves the issue.
One other issue I'm having is that they don't play on one of my higher end dvd players. When I put it in, it does not read them, it says "no disc". That is a bummer because that dvd player is only 4 yrs old and it has a lot of features on it that most regular dvd players don't have. However, the discs do play on my newer dvd recorder, which does not have the other features that I have on the other.
Maybe it is true about what other people say... that the manufacturing plant makes a difference and/or the quality has gone down. I have received Verbatim discs before that actually do play on both of my dvd players. The noticeable difference is their top surface. The ones I purchased here are "silver" mirror like with the brand name across the surface. The other ones have a plain white "matte" finish, which appear to be the better ones IMO. Does anyone know what the difference is and/or if this even matters? The ones I purchased here I had no control on which ones I received. I also could not find on the label as to where thay were made.

Customer Review: The best around...for what its worth...
Summary: 5 Stars

DVD+R DL discs are not nearly as dependable or compatible as standard DVD-R and DVD+R. So that said, even the best, is still a little rough. Verbatim used to put out extremely high quality discs. They changed up their production a little bit and with it the Verbatim quality declined. Original Verbatims used to be perfect for me. Never a bum disc. The new Verbatims are still very good but I get a coaster usually out of every pack. At least one bad burn. I've become accustomed to that with DVD+R DL. The fact is...these degraded Verbatims are still the best DVD+R DL compared to anything else out on the market. New Memorex (yes they changed and got worse), Ricohjpn, Ridata, Playo, etc. All these discs are much poorer in comparison. Of course Verbatim is a little more expensive then the other discs but its worth it. Nothing like spending 20-40 minutes burning a DVD+R DL only for it to fail at 97%. Its a waste of time. So I'd rather spend a little extra for something that 98% of the time works properly and these verbatims are just that. 98% success rate.

I realize that if I could find a better DVD burner, I may have better success in burning, not just with these discs but other brands as well. But finding a good dvd burner is just about as hard as finding good DVD+R DL media.

Though I've tried many other brands, I always come back to Verbatim with my tail between my legs sorta speak. Cause the other brands never work out. So I give this product a 5 star rating, not because its perfect, but because it's as perfect as a DVD+R DL can get for me. Far beyond any other brand on the market.

Customer Review: Works Perfectly with SATA DVD Burner
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me start out by saying that I could NEVER burn a Memorex or any brand DL disk when using an IDE DVD burner (tried 3 different brands of burner). Single layer was fine. I'm not sure why, but I'm guessing there was some limitations in the IDE bus on my motherboard and it was corrupting the data when it came to DL disks. My computer would freeze for a moment and then I'd get an error message of some sort. I tried dozens of different burning software and nothing worked until going to a SATA drive. So if your having trouble burning DL disks try upgrading to a SATA DVD burner.

I finally got a basic level LG SATA drive and all my problems were solved. I've yet to have a bad burn or any coasters that were caused by a bad disk. These Memorex work fine for me and I've used both the 8x and 2.4x versions. I don't notice any difference between the quality of burn with the 8x vs the 2.4x. All the disks work in my PS3 perfectly. I obviously prefer the 8x due to the time difference it takes to burn a disk but you can get the 2.4x cheaper so I tend to buy them. I also believe that a slower burn will give you a better burned DVD that is likely to have less issues when playing back. But, like I said I haven't had any issues with the 8x and the PS3.

I don't think for long term storage of critical data you would want to use a DL disk due to it being more complex in nature and more likely to have issues or fail as it ages. For pure data backups, I use Taiyo Yunden DVD-Rs.
