Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of V-MODA Vibe In-Ear Noise-Isolating Metal Headphone (Gunmetal Black)

Customer Review: Oh I wanted these to work...
Summary: 3 Stars

So I got myself an mp3 player I did. Stock headphones of course were bad. Went to the store and grabbed some skullcandy smokin' buds. Thought they were good. Anything is good coming from stock headphones. They gave up the ghost 8 months into our relationship of being shoved into pockets. The wire was no longer soldered to the plug...Upgrade Time!

Looked at reviews for these V-Modas. Thought, they have been out for awhile. I will get a good set. I got a good set. V3. 45degree plug and everything. Oh they put the skullcandys to shame. They sounded so nice. Good highs and bass was nice. I could hear everything so much better. (Keep reading though). They fit in the ear so well. They were nice and stubby so you could lay on a pillow and not be bothered! But soon the wire started to twist up due to the cloth around it. Finally 5 months into owning these the left channel went out completely. No worries, Warranty! Sent them in. Got another set back within 2 weeks. Came with a new bag and new ear plugs (I didnt send that stuff in). I was so excited. I plugged my headphones into my mp3 player. They sounded nothing like what I sent in to be fixed. The skullcandys sounded better than this. I was saddened. No matter what song I listened to, nor what I played it on, nor changing equalizer settings fixed the problem...

Ooh I got myself a Zune HD! I need new headphones for this. With the zune I bought the klipsch image s4. I got them for $70. Only $20 more than I paid for the Vibes. I cant believe I ever let my ears listen to anything not as good as these klipsch. They blew me away. They have lasted over a year of being shoved into pockets, being stepped on, being ripped out of my ears, having the plug ripped out of the zune. Im kinda hoping they die right before the 2 year warranty goes out. They are showing age, but they work just as good as new.

So what am I saying? The Vmodas are great if you have never listened to anything that cost more than $30 in store. And if you can get them for $30 go for it. Dont expect them to last long. And do know that you can treat your ears better. I know that, but my klipsch wont die letting me upgrade. I still use my Vmodas if I forget my klipsch somewhere. They get the job done, but they are definitely missing something, like sound.

Customer Review: Nice sound, bad durability
Summary: 3 Stars

Overall I like these earbuds a lot. They do have a very strong bass bias, so if that is what you are looking for great, if that bothers you then you should definitely look elsewhere. Any of the preset equalizers with heavy bass on my MP3 player are basically unusable with these earbuds because it will drown out the other ranges. But a flat or treble-biased equalizer sounds great because the bass is still available, along with rich mids and clear treble. The range on these earbuds is also noticeably larger, especially on the low end, than other headphones I've used.

These are great earbuds if you want to listen to music in a loud environment, such as a crowded office, bus, or even airplane, without having to crank up the volume. Because of the seal these make in your ear canal they block out most environment background noise so all you hear is the music. These work so well that I actually play tracks at about half the volume as I did with regular earbuds, and as a result I've even noticed improvement in the battery life of my MP3 player.

The only fault I've had with these is that about 8-9 months after purchasing these the sound in the left earbud started to cut out. The problem was the wire connecting to that earbud seemed to be slipping loose and cutting off the sound. Luckily I was within the 1-year warranty and they shipped me another pair, but I was distressed that such an expensive pair of headphones would go out after several months. The problem is likely in the design: since the metalic earbuds fit within your ears there is natural tendency to pull them out by the base of the wires when removing them from the ear. This probably loosened the mount over several months and resulting in it wearing out. So if you get these definitely pull them out by the bud itself, not the wire.

Pros:
* good rich sound if you don't mind the bass
* stylish, catchy colors (I have the metalic red), goes well with ipods if you are sick of white wires
* wires are less prone to tangling
* great blocking of environmental noise, especially in noisy environments. benefits of noise canceling headphones with the batteries or the bulk.

Cons:
* Several reviews note having to return them to fix problems with the wires.

Customer Review: Comparing Three Different Sets: V-Moda, J-Buds, Sony
Summary: 4 Stars

I've now got three pair of earbuds to compare, V-Moda Vibe (2nd generation), J-Buds, and Sony MDR-ED21LP Fontopias. If I'm listening to music directly from my computer, sound-quality wise, I'd rank them J-Buds, Fontopia, and V-Moda. Base and treble or highs are crisper in that order. If I'm listening to my Sony Walkman (8 GB MP3)and there is little ambient noise, then surprise, Fontopia, J-Buds, and V-Moda.

It's important to compare what you're listening to as well as where and for what purpose. When I'm walking on a city street, I don't want noise canceling, so Fontopia's open design is best. Oddly, though, Fontopia gives the best bass of the three.

If I'm listening to classical music - say Itzhak Perleman - then I'll give the J-Buds the higher rating. (I also like the J-Buds because it has the longest cord, but not too long.)

However, and this is very important, the differences between the three are not readily apparent under any circumstances. There's no way to listen to all three at the same time, so everything become relevant. The V-Moda are initially the most comfortable. After 4 hours, they're all a pain in the ear.

There is one thing that I really don't like about the V-Moda: the R and L for right and left channel is hidden under the rubber bud, and it does make a difference. What doesn't make a difference is how good they look, and that I'll never understand. Paying more for red than black seems downright silly. And once they're in your ears, you can't see them anyway. You want something that disappears, get hearing aids.

The V-Modas do seem "brighter" with pop music from the computer. They also "cancel" ambient noise slightly better than the J-Buds. Sooooo, I might go V-Moda on a plane and J-Buds for all other situations. BUT the Sony's still have the best bass and it's noticeable. Btw, on the Sony Walkman, the "Custom setting" is best because you can diddle with your own preferences, but "Pop" gives a better overall range than "Heavy." As for the iPod, I no longer care after having two of them wear out the batteries faster than even an i-River. (Besides, who wants to convert all that music and deal with such proprietary nonsense?)

Customer Review: Powerful Bass/Solid Construction
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these earbuds as a replacement for an older pair of iPod earphones and have had no regrets from day one. Right off the bat, the first thing you notice is the construction of these earbuds. They completely outclass most other earbuds with buds in a solid metallic housing that connect through a woven mesh cable to a unique 45 degree angled 3.5mm audio plug. The entire setup simply screams durability. The woven mesh cable seems much more resilient than standard synthetic rubber cables and are much easier to untangle. There is also a refreshingly wonderful lack of plastic used in the Vibe's construction. In short, the V-MODA Vibe goes all out in appearance, scoring points early on from its initial unwrapping.

With such an attractive appearance, the Vibe better have some serious sound quality to back it up as well, right? No matter how it fares as eye candy, if it doesn't deliver in sound quality, it's nothing more than a glorified pair of earplugs, after all. Not to worry, I assure you now that you can lay down your fears because the Vibe can and will handle just about everything you throw at it. However, you probably noticed I said "just about," well, that's because the Vibe is not perfect, and I must point out that the Vibe DOES, in fact, have an Achilles' Heel. The trouble seems to occur specifically in music that is heavy on piano solos where the pianist seems to feel more at home in the upper registers. Basically, the normally rich, vibrant sounds you are used to become accentuated by tinny squeaks when particularly high notes are emphasized. So, if you happen to be considering this purchase with a stack of Yiruma CD's waiting to be tested, don't bother. For the rest of us who listen to songs that focus more upon the bass and midrange of music, this pair will not disappoint. With the proper fitting, these earbuds provide bass that reverberate within your head and maintain a beautiful clear, crisp sound throughout your playlist. A quick recap:

Customer Review: A simple and fast review
Summary: 3 Stars

I got these bad boys from Amazon about 6 months ago. Let me first say that I absolutely love these earbuds. I spent a lot of time doing research and trying out different brands and types. One type that stands out are the Shure Se210 earbuds. I really didn't like them and I think they cost over 100$. These are much better in terms of sound and cost less. The sound quality of the Shure earbuds wasn't that great especially when it came to bass (and I know how to wear them). Anyway, the one issue that came up in all my research was that a large majority were saying that the Vibe earbuds do not last. I went against my better judgment and purchased them anyway. I had read that V-moda had fixed the issues by changing the shape of the jack (the part that you plug into the ipod or whatever your using). The earbuds that i received had the new jack seen in the picture. I broke them in (like you have to do with most higher end headphones) by just playin music through them for 24 hrs. Sound quality was amazing. I love the deep bass. Goes good with all my music (which is everything but country). Now here is the problem. Just last week the left earbud quit on me. I was always careful with them and by no means was this my fault. Sucks really bad because i really like these. So the bottom line is that these earbuds WILL quit on you. Don't take the chance unless you don't mind buying a few pairs. Like i said, they sound great. I would rate them 5 stars for sure if they were still working like they should. Now I have to bend the stupid cord and use a rubber band to keep it in place if I want to hear Marilyn Manson or Infected Mushroom in both ears. I'm goin with the Monster Turbine next and I'll give that a review later on. Feel free to ask me any questions. Let me also add that anyone who thinks that their standard ipod headphones are better than any pair costing more than 20$ are completely stupid and have absolutely no reason to be writing a review on headphones. Anything is better then those standard ipod earbuds. Period. hope this was helpful...
